Hello,
I was hoping someone could help me regarding a question I have on Youghal. I have an ancestor who was apparently born in a "now heritage-listed" house in Youghal, made "famous" locally by a visit from Charles Stewart Parnell. My ancestor was Edward Richard Cotter, born in 1884. His father was also Edward (a bookkeeper) and his mother was Mary Walsh.
Can anyone suggest how I might track down this house he was apparently born in? Is there an online listing of buildings in Youghal?
Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!
Kind Regards
Sal

Hi Maz,
I certainly don't mind you adding to my thread about Youghal, we both seem to be in the same boat (or harbour, as it is)! Lets hope some knowledgeable person out there can help us.
Kind Regards,
Sal :)

entries for Youghal from Slater's Commercial Directory
1881
Cotter Jeremiah, Cross lane, (PAINTERS, PLUMBERS AND
GLAZIERS.)
William H. Cotter The Mall (Public House)
Assembly Rooms, Mall House - Edward Cotter, keeper
1870
John Cotter, South Main st - Hair Dressers
Jeremiah Cotter , North Main st - Painters, Plumbers and
Glaziers
Assembly Rooms, Mall House Edward Cotter, keeper
the Mall House where these Cotters worked sounds like it could be a listed building - see the wikipedia page for a mention of it...

hi Sal
Thanks.
My g-g grandfather was a waterman and seemed to move around a bit so it is very hard to locate any real info. he had 4 children. 2 born in Ireland, 1 in Kent and 1 in Sussex. Can't find anything on any of them. :(
As you said I hope there is someone out there that can give us a helping hand.

hi Maz !
I dont know exactly what a waterman does - but he sounds like an occupation that might in some of the commercial directories. If you post his name and approx dates I'll have a look for him.

Hi Shane,
Thank you so much for your response, I certainly do appreciate it! The Mall House sounds promising, and the two men I'm researching are indeed called Edward (father and son). Father was apparently a bookkeeper and son eventually joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers and went to the Boer War (maybe he didn't fancy staying in town doing the books...?!). Our family lore also mentions that Charles Stewart Parnell visited "their house", though this now seems erroneous. I'm quite sure that it would have be the done thing for him to visit the Assembly Rooms and attend a concert or two at Mall House, along with all the other fashionable people of the day!
I understand that there is a system in Northern Ireland for listing buildings of historical interest (similar to English Heritage, I guess), but I don't suppose you know offhand if there is something similar for the south?
Kind regards,
Sal :)

Oh, never mind answering my question in the second paragraph, I've just discovered a page on The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage!

hi Shane
Thanks so much for the offer. :)
My gg grandfathers name was William(s) Vincent. His sons, who were born in Youghall, were Joseph Hale Vincent and William Thomas Vincent. They were born around 1839 and 1841. My gg grandfather would have been about 34 years old when Joseph was born.

sorry no mention of the Vincent surname in Youghall
It looks like a waterman is a similar occupation to a boatman - so possibly William worked with this person :
Custom House, Strand section
Tide Wailer(*) & Boatman - George Sloane, Mouse street.
(* - letter is smudged - I'm not sure if thats an L or a T )
The nearest Vincent surname from Slaters directory 1846 is :
N. & R. Vincent attorneys, 8 South Mall, Cork (city)
