Title: Birth and Death advice needed!
Post by: pippalew on Tuesday 13 January 09 09:17 GMT (UK)
I need help please! The 1911 census tells me that my great grandparents had one child deceased by date of the census. I have no living relative to ask, and my nana (now gone) thought she had been an only child, how do i find out more?

Is there some way to narrow things down? I am looking for a child born between 1901 and 1911, I have no name, no gender, no place of birth, the parents lived in Orrell in 1901 and bolton from at least 1910. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Cheers, Pippa

Hi Pippa

You have the surname and mother's maiden name, so you could try contacting the local register offices to see if they can help, most have indexes to search.

Otherwise it means choosing all with that surname from 1901-1911, and checking each one with either the register office named or the GRO (which could be expensive)

I'd have a look through Lancs bmds site too as that may give more detailed places of birth than freebmd http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

I'd start with the places you know they lived.  For Orrell: http://www.wigan.gov.uk/Services/CommunityLiving/BirthsDeathsMarriages/
Bolton: Bolton Register Office, Mere Hall, Merehall Street, Bolton BL1 2QT
