Post by: Freckle on Tuesday 13 January 09 03:30 GMT (UK)
Would some kind soul be able to check South Australia BDM for Helen Elizabeth Liddell. Born about 1843 to Andrew and Margaret. She died 12 May 1859 age 16 in NSW.
Thanks in advance

I've had a look, Freckle....but can't see her birth in the index.
No entries for parents Andrew and Margaret at all.

There is a Helen Elizabeth born 1886 to a John and Elizabeth.

Greetings Freckle,

I can't see her death on NSW BDM.  ??? Was just curious.

There does seem to be another child born to the parents, though.

Thanks Dee. Poor little mite was dead by 1859. Appreciate you looking for me

Janice, I can't find it on NSW BDM either. I found it through a cemetery listing for Hiland Cresent Tenambit and Maitland Historical Society have confirmed it for me.
The site has been offline for 2 days as has the Ryerson Index. She is mentioned on her mothers death certificate, thats the only reason I knew about her.
Thanks for your interest. All assistance greatfully appreciated.

Civil registration was not compulsory until 1855 in SA...date of Act of Parliament.

Nothing on the early births in SA either

I think the Andrew Liddell that you were thinking of is my ancestor —- he certainly did have a daughter named Helen that died in 1859 (she was born in 1842) — she’s mentioned on the his tombstone which is shown at the ‘A Conspicuous Object’ website (see the web link below). He had five children: Andrew Liddell (he went on to become a civil engineer), Francis Liddell (became a doctor and a politician), Fanny (she died at quite a young age), and Margaret Liddell (married into the Littlejohn family).

https://aconspicuousobject.com.au/stories/discovering-all-of-this

A Conspicuous Object — Andrew Liddell— this is my ancestor. He came out from Scotland: (https://www.geni.com/people/Andrew-Liddell/6000000049825712857), however, there is some confusion caused by the Free Settler or Felon webpage (https://www.freesettlerorfelon.com/andrew_liddell.htm).

‘Free Settler or Felon’ does mention Andrew Liddell coming over on the George Fyfe (correct information), but this is not related to what ‘Free Settler or Felon’ mention regarding a Dr Liddell arriving in South Australia i.e. they mention:
‘Dr. Liddell with wife and child arrived in South Australia on the Glenswilly in 1839 with the intention of travelling on to Sydney. (possibly William?)’.

The ‘Andrew Liddell’ that came over from Scotland is not the Andrew Liddell of South Australia —-they are two different people.
