Hi,
I have just accessed the 1911 census to discover my Grandfather was an Inmate in Nazareth House, Prittlewell. It looks like it may have been a children's home, his father had died the year before but the other four children are still at home and living with their mother in Poplar. Anybody know what Nazareth House was?
Thanks in anticipation :)

If you google Nazareth House Prittlewell there are quite a few references to it maybe it might help with your search.

Hi,
I tried that but it kept coming up with the sisters of Nazareth, Scotland. I did find one reference and it appears that in 1901 it was a Home for the Aged, Poor and the Destitute. Mind you it was the early hours of the morning so maybe I need to try again with a fresh head :)
If this was a children's home his behaviour now makes so much sense. He had no sense of family and though he had many sisters only ever kept in touch with one of them.
Thanks xx

Hi,
You could contact Essex Records Office they might have information. Seems Nazareth House had alot of children there. Know from the past my father sent a huge box of toys to a Nazareth House this one was in Ireland. Just type in the google search nazareth house prittlewell you should get a fair bit of information.

Cheers Jean. Looks like they were run by the Sisters of Nazareth, this sure answers so many questions about him. I never knew him. He had a nervous breakdown and ran away leaving 6 children. Had held down a pretty responsible & middle class job up to then, so he did well for a while then crashed. Very sad story :(

Google Nazareth House London road Southend there's an article in the local paper. Southend also has a Museum that may have some history on this Orphanage.

Hi LJ
Nazareth House was a very large building situated on the London Road at Southend. I'm not sure what it started off as, but in the 60's my Father used to work for a large bakery by the name of Garons. When he finished his round on a Friday afternoon, he used to call into Nazareth House and in his words The kids and the Nun's would all come out. I used to open the back doors of the van and they emptied it of all the cakes etc I had left.
They never had to pay for what was there. I suppose that was a big treat for them all.
Regards .. Lyn

Here are some of them

They seem to have been all over the place, South Africa, Australia, England, Ireland and Scotland (quite awful cases there)
-
Thank you Essex girl :D My grandfather was there in 1911 so I expect it was very different for him then. Like dancing master says there are some pretty awful cases come out of Scotland's experiences. I can only hope these things didn't happen to my Granddad but it would explain some things about him if they did :(
I think I will try writing to the Sisters of Nazareth and see if they hold any records for that period. I have tried with other orders to get details on my grandmother but they seem to sit tight on their info :-X
Thanks all, means alot ;D

Good luck with the Sisters of Nazareth :-\ These organizations do seem to keep things close to the chest. I've had a similar situation with my gt aunt, who was a Major in the Salvation Army :-X They have no information on her history with them.

There's also an article in the local paper - Evening Echo - dated 11th December 2008 - which will be of interest to you.

I'm completely new to this board but here goes.
I am familiar with Nazareth House only in recent years (30 odd) and it used to be run by nuns as a residential home and also for homeless people. I think it now belongs to the Council and is run as a nursing home but I can't be precise on that. It is a large Victorian building with high perimeter walls and stands back from the main London Road (A13) on the borders of Westcliff and Southend-on-Sea. I hope this snippet is useful to you.

I have only to-day joined this interesting forum. I visited Nazareth House, Hammesrsmith on a number of occasions during the war (WW2)and never knew why. I have now found that my mother was an inmate in 1911. I have established that her mother died in 1904 just after she was born. I assume that her father couldn't cope as they had about 7 children, and put her into Nazareth House. I have since found that my godmother and a very close friend were also ther in 1911 and they remained friends up to 1978. All 3 of them were trained at the convent as domestic servants and were put out to a well to-do family home in the area. I don't know at what age but they were there until about 1929 when my mother married. As far as I am aware the House still exists. When I went there it was a convent but had a full staff of lay people.

i was at Nazareth house southend on sea when i was a child[1954-1965] from the age of 2 till i was 13/14 i still have great memory's as a young man , the home was run by catholic nuns , as i recall there was a mini farm, football field, vegetable patch. the children use to be in dormentrys with a nun ina cubicle in the corner of the room, i am not sure of the number of children who were there at any given time, but the number 150-300 seems to ring a bell.

I have a couple of group photos of boys at Nazareth House Southend (including my father). They are undated but by his appearance were probably taken about 1913/14. If anyone wants copies, send me a PM. MaxD
