Hi,
I'm hoping someone can find me the details of the burial of William BINGHAM which occurred on Sept. 2nd 1901 at Middlesbrough Cemetery.
I think the cemetery referred to is probably Linthorpe cemetery as the original Middlesbrough cemetery would have been closed by this date.
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Have just phoned Middlesbrough cemeteries office, the grave is at Linthorpe cemetery, William Bingham, 2nd September 1901, grave number 6406B, he was 66 and died in Middlesbrough Infirmary. That's all the information they had, don't know if there was a headstone or not.
If you see our posting

three of us are going grave-hunting in the area next Monday, so we'll put you on the list

Hi Barbara,
Many thanks for taking the time to call the cemetries office, I thought someone might have access to the records electronically or on fiche but to call on my behalf is more than I expected anyone to do.
I had seen your posting about going on a grave hunt and was trying to find out these details to pass on to you so I look forward to seeing if you manage to find anything at this location. My own experiences of grave hunting are it can be a bit hit and miss, even with a plot number! I hope the weather is kind to you.
Thanks again,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
It's no great trouble, the cemetery office is a mile south from me, Linthorpe cemetery just over a mile north!
Will let you know how we get on, if we don't freeze in the attempt

Hi Jonathan,
I don't know if you saw my reply on the other post about the cemetery visit, so posting here for you. We found the correct grave site (B 6406) for your William Bingham, and there was an old headstone, but it was for a Mary Firth who died 4 May 1891 aged 68.
I have just phoned the cemetery office to check this and the book for that section was at the archives for re-binding, so I phoned the archives who will look it up and call me back today or tomorrow.
Meanwhile, do you know if Mary Firth was a relative of William Bingham? I took a photograph of the headstone, if you would like a copy please let me have your email address (by personal message)

Solved! You probably already know this but I was curious, so looked for Mary in the census
1891 RG12/4014 Folio 37 Page 25
29 Bowley Street, Middlesbrough
William Bingham head wid 53 General Labourer Nottingham Fenton
Mary Firth sister " 67 Lincolnshire Langworth

It's a relief to know we had found the right grave!
Middlesbrough archives just phoned to say that there are two burials for that grave, Mary Firth in 1891 and the other 2nd September 1901 - the name wasn't legible on the microfiche, he said, but must be your William.
