I have received some research from Staffs. Archives which shows nine children born to William Mosedale and Susanna Twigg.
The parish is given as Hanbury for all of them. The abode for the first 7 is Rolleston, Castle Hay ?? (possibly Bank). The last 2 are shown as King's Standing.
Does anyone know these places? Do they still exist?
I believe William and Sarah were married about 1819 (birth of first son, Joseph). Can anyone help with date and place please?

Hello Lynne
Rollaston is about 3 miles north of Burton on Trent.
Hansbury is about 4 miles west of Rollaston.
You can see these on google maps ;)
Kings Standing doesn't seem to be on the maps, but an ordinary google search suggests it is near Hanbury ;)

IGI has a marriage 11 October 1819 Stafford
William Mosedale and Susana Twigg.

Kingstanding is in North Birmingham.

Thanks Mum44 for the marriage details. Would it have been in Stafford, or is that just the registration district?
It's King's Standing that is puzzling. The baptism is Hanbury and abode KS. Surely it wouldn't be the one near Birmingham?

I would think it was in Stafford; there were no registrations districts before 1837 when civil registration began :)

Hello,
The batch number for the marriage Mosedale/Twigg starts with an I and could be, according to the Hugh Wallis site, submitted entries. Looking at some of the entries on that batch that were post 1837, they were at different churches in Staffordshire and not necessarily in Stafford itself.
Click on the batch no on the IGI entry and look at the list and cross reference with freebmd for the later ones. It may be that the entries are all for places in the Burton - Tutbury - Hanbury area.

Hello Handm
One of the later ones on IGI is George, who is William's son. I have his marriage certificate to Fanny married in Tutbury.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi All,
I live near Rolleston and Tutbury and a friend of mine lives in Hanbury. I have just 'phoned him and he tells me Kings Standing is just outside Hanbury(but I'd not heard of it.) It apparently now consists of a few old cottages and half a dozen modern houses, it's also home to Kings Standing Hall which belonged to a local business man.
Castle Hay is just outside Tutbury. Rolleston,Tutbury and Hanbury are villages that run of from each other and wouldn't have been highly populated in the 1800's.
let me know if you need any other info.
kind regards

Kingstanding used to be Warwickshire, which now comes under West Midlands.
As I said before its a well known place to me.

Driving down to Birmingham down the motorway, M6 South
Birmingham is on your right and Kingstanding (all one word) is on the left of the Motorway - Sutton Coldfield.

Hi again,
The Kingstanding in Birmingham is where I went to school -it has no connection with the Kings Standing near Hanbury. Since my previous posting I have put King Standing Hall in the search engine and it is up for sale " Only £1.4 million - bargain !.
Place name is given as Needwood which is correct - Needwood is close to Hanbury,
and is close to the other villages mentioned and also Barton under Needwood is only 1/2 miles away.
If my lottery numbers come up this week watch this space !!!

Hi Sandyq
Thankyou so much for that. It all makes sense. The last 2 children were shown as Abode - Kings Standing. Their father, William Mosedale, was a gardener, so perhaps he worked at the Hall.
One of the older children was entered in the baptism record as "Moseley" but the parents were correct. I understand there was a large house at Rolleston owned by the Mosely family - I wonder if there is any connection!
I will have to make a trip over when the weather gets better and see all these places for myself. Is there a graveyard in Rolleston?
Thanks for your help.

If mine come up, I might beat you to it!!

Hi Lynne,
Have just done a virtual tour of King Standing hall -looks lovely!
You are right about the Mosely family - they lived at the Old Hall in Rolleston.
There are several properties built in the grounds which occasionally come up for sale -it's just known as THe Old Hall Grounds- in fact about 10 years ago we were in the process of purchasing there when the sale of our own property fell through, and by the time we''d resold ours- it had gone -such is life.
There is a church and graveyard at Rolleston which is offically known as Rolleston on Dove, its a nice village and has two very good pubs The Spread Eagle and The Jinnie, also an excellent Farmhouse restaurant - The Brookhouse - and just down the road The Dovecliffe Hotel which I can see from my garden.so if you come over give me a shout and I'll join you !.
There are also graveyards at Hanbury and Rangemore which might be of relevance to you.
kind regards

I've come to the conclusion its not worth posting on this subject. People try to help the best way they can. The problem is we all do lookups that others could also do for themselves.

My great grandfather worked at Kingstanding Hall as a gardener - it was pulled down during the last war - an aerodrome operated there. It was quite close to Newchurch so sort of in the Newborough area. It's nice to hear of someone else with Kingstanding links - I have photos by the way of the hall and servants - mind you I'm useless at posting photos.

Hello Derby girl
I'm confused now as the post by Sandyq shows the Hall is currently for sale and I've seen the pictures online. Is it likely there were two halls in such a small place? I would love to see the pictures you have. I obviously don't know for sure that my gg grandfather worked there, but there is a good chance.

Well I looked at the postcard (one of J S Simnett's) I've got - there's another photo I've got with the hall's staff - and it's a different house; a regency villa with a flat-roofed tetrastyle doric portico, built in front of another section of building which might well have been older, and a large wing on one side, possibly older. Since my pa has told me that the hall was demolished during the war to make room for the aerodrome, I can only imagine the family moved to another house, and called that Kingstanding Hall. I wonder if Lichfield Record Office could help here - unfortunately I'm living in Yorkshire at present, and have no car, so trips there are very difficult.

Kings Standing is certailnly near to Tutbury, Anslow, Rolleston.....but it's not a placename on a map.....it was originally part of the Needwood forest, and the history books say that it is the

Kingstanding is where the King "stood" when Hunting in mediaeval times, and was part of Needwood Forest, which extended to Tutbury, Hanbury, Anslow, Barton under Needwood Yoxall, Marchington Newborough etc.
and was administered from Tutbury Castle.
OS map 245 shows Needwood Forest with Kingstanding near to the B5234 from Burton to Newborough opposite Lancaster Park and the Tatenhill Airfield, near to where the new National Football centre is being built.
