Could SKS please help me to locate Henry PONTING, born about 1845 in Bristol (probably Clifton) in 1861 and 1871?
In 1881 he was in Walsall, Staffordshire, with his wife Eliza and family but I don't know where he was or who he was with in earlier censuses.
Many thanks for any help with this inquiry.
Kind regards
Philip Candy

Hi Phil, based on the kids ages in 1881, he was in the Blakenall area of Staffs at least in 1871 ?
great pity that his PoB is illegible in 1881 ....
-
Hi both :)
The 1861 census shows a Henry Ponting age 16 born Cirencester, lodging in Gt Wyrley Staffordshire with a Rowlands family.
(The 1901 census, in Walsall, shows Henry's birth place quite clearly as Cirencester I'd say - and looking closer at 1881, it's Cirencester as well in my opinion)

altho names not a perfect match, (only Edward, so who/where is Jabez ? ) think this is them ..
1871 - RG10/2959; Folio: 59; Page: 23 - Blakenall, Walsall

on what were you basing Bristol or Clifton PoB Phil ?
-
Dear both
Many thanks for these very helpful leads. Like you, I had found him in 1881 as follows:
1881 Census of Stafford
RG11/Piece / Folio 2820 / 102
5 Churm Terrace
Walsall Foreign
Henry PONTING Head M Male 36 ...* Iron Worker
Eliza PONTING Wife M Female 37 Pelsall, Stafford, England
Jabez PONTING Son U Male 17 Blakenall, Stafford, England Iron Worker
Edward PONTING Son U Male 15 Blakenall, Stafford, England Iron Worker
Eliza Ann PONTING Daur U Female 10 Blakenall, Stafford, England Scholar
Mary PONTING Daur U Female 8 Blakenall, Stafford, England Scholar
Elizabeth PONTING Daur U Female 6 Blakenall, Stafford, England Scholar
Henry PONTING Son U Male 3 Blakenall, Stafford, England
Charles PONTING Son Male 9 m Blakenall, Stafford, England
*The place of birth is either missing or illegible
From the above, Henry PONTING was born about 1845. I couldn't find any of the children being born in Staffordshire under the name PONTING, but there are several named POINTON, POYNTON or PONTON, which could be a variant spelling.
There is a possible marriage between Henry POINTING and Eliza ROWLEY at Walsall, Staffordshire on 18 DEC 1865. The question is where was he from? It has been suggested that he was from Bristol, and indeed there is a Henry PONTING aged 6 (i.e, born in 1845) in the Clifton Workhouse in 1851, but he is the only PONTING in the Workshouse, suggesting that he was abandoned or else his mother had died sometime between 1845 and 1851.
However, your finds suggest Cirencester (or even Wolverhampton!) as possible places of birth.
Curiouser and curiouser...
Happy New Year, by the way, and many thanks for responding.
Best wishes
Phil

on what were you basing Bristol or Clifton PoB Phil ?
Hi Newf
I'm trying to help someone who wrote to me, and she said that she thought he was from Bristol. I haven't any proof either way.
Kind regards
Phil

This is from the 1881 image - 2nd line. If you want it to read Cirencester (as in 1901), I think it does :)

This looks pretty convincing to me tati.
Thanks so much; I'll wait and see if the lady who wrote to me can add anything to what she already told me.
Kind regards and thanks again.

Hello everyone " Happy New Year " to all. I greatly appreciate the posts. I myself, is at cross road on the research. Anything I have is either too old or too new to the dates I was given. I did find on a tree post this. Henry Ponting b. 1831 - St. James, Bristol, GLS, Eng. Bap. 19 June 1831 St James, St. Jacob, Bristol. Son of Thomas Ponting and Amelia Row. Shows he was married twice. He married, lived and died in Australia. " Nichols Family Person " pg. 10, tizzana.com/au/familyhistory . I wrote to the person I am trying to help with what was found by everyone. I told him, a little more information would help. I am waiting on his replie and will let everyone know A.S.A.P. Thanks again on the posts.

Hi Gretchen :)
The only census I can see the family you mention is 1841. I wonder if they emigrated between 1841 and 1851.
Might be worth posting on the Emigrants to Australia board

This is what I found today. All persons listed were from the district of Clifton in the county of Gloucestershire. Henry was born in 1840. He married a Maria Stevens b. 1848. They married Dec.1865. Edward William b. 1868. If you find something to add to the search, it would be great. If you know of a good site to research at let me know also. Thanks everyone.

I'm confused now Gretchen. Earlier you said
Shows he was married twice. He married, lived and died in Australia.
but the 1865 marriage you mention is in England:
Dec 1865 Clifton 6a 244
Henry Ponting - Maria Stevens
and the most likely census match in 1871 is:
St Philip & St Jacob, Gloucestershire
84 Victoria Ter
Maria Ponting, head, widow, 23, Tailoress, b. Bristol St Phillips
Henry, son, 4, b. do.
With a probable death registration for Henry sr as follows:
Henry Ponting age 29
Dec 1869
Clifton 6a 95
which would make him born ca. 1840, as you say = 10 years too young to be the Henry son of Thomas and Amelia ???
-
It seems Maria goes on to marry an Alfred Sims in Sep 1871, and they are all enumerated as Sims in 1881:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/05c5/
RG11/2501 82 14
All including Edward age 22 named Sims in 1891 as well ( RG12/1986 125 20)

I am sorry for any confusion, when I posted the prior findings of the Henry who was in Australia. That was the only findings I could locate and wondered if it " could " be the right one. With little information ( and wide area to his birth date ) in trying to help someone. I felt like I was searching in the dark at most points. The person is happy for my help but, at the same time I feel he is a little reserved on what information he has or gives out. ( ???? ) My deepest appoligies. The findings I made last night are of the right family. The person who I am trying to help confirmed I was on the right track. But the confirmation is all I got. Sorry again.
-
No problem at all Gretchen - just trying to find the correct family for you :D
-
So - you'll need Henry's marriage certificate to confirm his father's name because there are several Henry Pontings born in Gloucestershire around 1840.
I quite like this boy in 1841 - shame the 1841 census doesn't show relationships.
1841
HO107/378/10 5 5
St Philip and St Jacob, Gloucestershire
Thomas Ponting, 48, Labourer, no (=not born in county)
Sarah, 42, no
Mary Ann, 18, no
Sarah Ann, 13, yes
Christianna, 8, yes
Thomas, 4, yes
Henry, 12 mo, yes
(There's a birth registered in Jun 1840 Clifton)

Hello Phil and Tati- im researching the same line and have had some useful help from Gretchen too. If that 1840 Henry born in Clifton is the Henry you're looking for we can go straight back to the late 1600s. Im a descendent of Edward William his son. Henry's father was this Thomas http://www.march-genealogy.co.uk/Genealogy/Legacy/Family/f147.htm#i4439
We can go back to Samuel and his family seemingly all from Westerleigh South Glocs. Im having little progress going further but I have stumbled across a will from 1635 in Westerleigh that mentions a Margaret Ponting - which has to indicate family residence in the village as far back as then.
I was expecting a migration from Somerset or North Wiltshire in my tree as those 2 areas seem to contain the vast bulk of all the Pontings that I can see.
Let me know if i can help further,
Rob

Many thanks Rob
I was helping Gretchen, but don't have any links to this family.
I'm hoping she will pick up on your excellent and very helpful posting.
Many thanks for taking the trouble to write.
Kind regards
Phil
