Title: WYATT William died Hamilton West 1904
Post by: Kiwi007 on Friday 09 January 09 11:44 GMT (UK)
hello List,

This is the first time I have posted on the NZ board so I am not sure if anyone can help...

I have just put together a grab bag of info relating to my William WYATT who came out from England ( Oxfordshire b Claydon) on the Alumbaugh ,18 August 1875, with his wife Anne and 3 daughters - Ruth Matilda WYATT b 1868, Mercy Albina WYATT b 1870 and Edith WYATT b 1873.

As a result of searching Paperspast tonight, I have discovered the family settled in Hamilton West. The 3 girls are mentioned as doing well at school and Ruth singing solos at the Wesleyan Church. I also learned that William was a shearer.

I have also discovered that Mercy Albina WYATT married Charles William PROUD around 1890 - they had at least one son , John William Wyatt PROUD b 1892 died 1959 in Auckland . I would love to know when the marriage took place and the names of any other children.
Mercy died aged 84 in 1954 and Charles died aged 87 in 1957 - both are buried at Waikumete cemetery, Auckland.

The PROUD family were iron mongers and had come out to NZ in 1865 on the Resolute. George Bell PROUD was the father and died 1920. He had another son, George Welford PROUD, mariner who drowned when the Drummond Castle was wrecked off France in 1897. I know that George W PROUD had 2 children - George William PROUD b 1888 died 1959, a storeman in Otahuhu, and Beatrice Amelia PROUD b abt 1890- no other details although I suspect she married a Mr Heald as I found a probate record ( index only) for a John George Bell Proud HEALD in 1969 .He died 1969 aged 63 and was a railway worker

I do not know what happened to Edith WYATT but would very much like to!

Ruth Matilda WYATT was my great great grandmother who married James NOY and lived in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands until her death late 1904 - just a few weeks after her Dad died. Her parents, William and Anne WYATT are buried in Hamilton cemetery - 1903 & 1904 both aged 63.

Ruth had 5 children for which I have information. Her husband, James NOY ( b Cornwall UK) lived to 97 years of age dying in 1952 and is buried with Ruth in Kawakawa.

I would love to make contact with any of the WYATT /PROUD/HEALD descendents and would greatly appreciate any help in finding records for the abovementioned folk.

Kind regards

Kiwi007 ( in Sydney OZ)

The death notice might hopefully have the names of the children mentioned.

I will have a look when I am next up at the library for you.

Hi Kiwi  ....  and welcome to the "Kiwi" board.     :)

Can find just one record on the NZ Marriage Index for your Beatrice Amelia PROUD.

Beatrice Amelia PROUD
Stephen Cardnal ELLIS
Year - 1907  (Folio # 5319)

There doesn't appear to be a re-marriage to a Mr. HEALD  ... and annoyingly, can find no records at present (Archives or other), for these ELLIS people.   Will keep looking.

[John George Bell Proud HEALD doesn't feature on the Marriage Index  ... well, certainly not under that lengthy "handle"]    ;)

WOW!!!

Thank you Delboy, Lucy and of course Kiwihalfpint!!

So much information and very good sources!

The PROUDs were in the molding business and George is George Bell PROUD who came out to NZ in 1865...so good to see him again in the electoral roll-along with the others

Re Beatrice Amelia PROUD - there may have been another daughter born after the family arrived in NZ who I am  unware of - she may have married a HEALD perhaps.

I will dig about and see what I can find for a Beatrice ELLIS now we have that marvellous clue!

Wonderful to see what Mercy's husband did for a living too. I didn't think it possible to find so much out..

The WYATTs in Northland do look interesting especially as they lived in the same place as my NOY and Saies families...however, they may be cousins to my immediate WYATT family. I have traced the rest of William's siblings and Anne's as well and they all seemed to have stayed put in Oxford.

I would be interested in the Edith WYATT marriages if you could PM me with them - the girls did have middle names but rarely used them in the early days.Only Mercy 's keeps showing up on records. I don't have Ruth Matilda's marriage to James NOY yet so I wonder if she uses Matilda for that.

Now, I have to get home as its late here and I am just about crossed eyed with all this new info- I will start the cemetery searches tomorrow for Beatrice etc

many thanks again for all your fantastic help.

Kind regards
Kiwi007

Hi Kiwi

I know you asked for "the marriages to be PM'd to you" ...  BUT, it's always helpful to have them posted "to the thread"  ... you just never know when someone might spot that information, and be able to add further to it.       :)

This could be a possibility also for Edith ?

Edith Emily WYATT
George Stanley THOMPSON
Year - 1899  (Folio # 2884)     (Source:  NZSG - CD)

[The next marriage for an "Edith WYATT" isn't until 1928 - so unilikely] :

EDIT :   Free BMD (UK)  Births - Dec 1873 - suggests that her name was "Edith Mary WYATT"
                                   -------------------------

.. and to answer the "Ruth" question  >>

Ruth Matilda WYATT
James NOY
Year - 1893   (Folio # 2165)

Have found some info for HEALD ... will put this in a separate post
... tomorrow - (time for sleep now, in "Kiwiland").    ;)

hi Lu,

Many thanks for the NOY marriage - I posted a message earlier this morning but it isn't on the board...it has vanished....

Since then, I found the death for Stephen and Beatrice ELLIS - they are buried at Waikumete, AKL,,he died 1947 and she died aged 70 in 1960.

I would love to know if they had children. He was 14 years older than Beatrice.

I also mentioned in the earlier post ( it may re-appear) that I dug up an old sheet of NOY info and in faint ink there is note that says Ruth Matilda WYATT had 3 sisters - Margaret, Ginny & Mercy. No mention of Edith - unless Edith was known by another name. If this is accurate, then  1 or 2 more daughters must have been born after the NZ arrival in 1875...maybe this explains the HEALD connection!!

Anyway, I will await the new info when you are up and about:-))

Cheers

Hi Kiwi

[Was just about to post the HEALD info].

Clever you ... well done on finding the ELLIS people.   :)

I will see if I can find death notices for you, for Stephen and Beatrice.

Ruth Matilda's,  WYATT sisters   .... Mmmm   - probably just two marriage possibilities to choose from (unless Margaret was a 2nd christian name).     As for "Ginny" - usually a diminutive of "Virginia" ... but of course could be just a nickname ??  (No Virginia/Ginny on M/ Index).

I wonder if you went back to PapersPast and those articles (re: their schooling), whether you might find these other daughters - same school, but in later years ??

  ...   possible marriages  ?

Margaret Annie WYATT
George William HALL
Year - 1898    (Folio #  1382)

Margaret Jane WYATT
Edgar James CHITHAM
Year - 1912     (Folio #  0030)

"Ginny"  ... Georgina ??   (In 1917 a Georgina May WYATT marrying a "JONES" ?     Bit of a longshot though).

A bit more....

Just found the deaths of

Rita Phyllis HALLIDAY 1889- 1964- aged 75, buried with husband William HALLIDAY 1887 - 1972 at Hamilton cemetery

Also:
Renee Bell DIGGENS 1898 - 1993 - Purewa Cemetery - aged 95!
Possibly married William Livingston DIGGENS

Someone that intrigues me is Joseph Woods WYATT 1905- 1994 who is buried at Hamilton - Ruth Matilda's maternal grandfather was Joseph WOODS.

Must go, hopefully a few more clues will come to light!

Cheers

HEALD

John George Proud HEALD - d. 1969 - buried Waikumete
[buried in same plot - Clara HEALD - died 1965 aged 96] :

Probate record at Archives NZ (Auckland )
HEALD - John George Bell Proud - 1969
[Appears to be for the person of same name (above) - and occupations are same ]:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sourced from funeral notice)  ...  John George Proud HEALD d. 23 July 1969, was the son of the late Clara and John HEALD.   (The names of his sister and a nephew appear in notice).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no marriage showing on NZ index for "a Clara and John".
(Nothing either for a "Clara PROUD" marrying):

On FREE BMD UK there is a Dec. 1894 HEALD / WOOD  marriage at Prestwich, Lancashire which looks a possibility - also the birth of a HEALD daughter (same place) which may be the dau/sister (have found her cemetery record for age comparison) ??

From "findmypast" website ... a HEALD family (near match for ages and names) arriving at Wellington NZ, 1899  ??

                                 -----------------------------

So I think, despite the name on that probate record looking so promising, that this family is probably not connected.   (But hey, I've been proven wrong before).    ;)

Hello again Lu!

I was working on that last post most of the day in between customers so didn't see your posts til just now........hmmmm...about George Bell PROUD to Agnes. I know that George and his wife ( Mrs PROUD) went to England in 1913 - and since you advise of this marriage I checked my info - his first wife had died in 1903 so this second marriage is most likely - a bit soon as Sarah died 18 Aug 1903.
George was buried in the same row almost near Sarah when he died 1920. No sign of Agnes PROUD's death yet.
That was a really good find - amazing what turns up eh!

Papers past only have 3 sisters showing up but the papers only go to 1886 - the younger girls would apear after that probably for exams and singing etc.

Margaret Wyatt is a conundrum - I will check deaths tomorrow ( as I have to leave now )
As for Ginny....what a nightmare trying to find this name :0))

talk again soon

Cheers

Hello Kiwi oo7

I am a resident in Hamilton and recently the Hamilton C ity Council have introduced a searchable locator at the main Newstead Cemetery showing the locations of burials at all of the Hamilton Cemeteries.

If you list the ones you want I will attempt to photograph the various headstones for you. It might take a week or two as I have to do this in my spare moments.

I was googling my grand fathers name for my son and bumped into your queries. My name is Narelle Cardon and my father was Barrie Henry Madinson Cardon and my grandfather was Henry Madinson Cardon - I noticed you had a fair bit of stuff you're looking into. Did you figure out the relationships at all?. Would love to help if I can.

Hi Kiwi007,
I have not used this before, so basically dont know how it all works!

I am a great grandchild of Ruth Matilda WYATT and James NOY.  I would be interested in receiving any information you have on the 5 (actually 6) NOY children.  I have some firstnames, and married names for some of them, from my mother, but little else.

Hi, I am not a relation but my second cousin's husband probably is and I am looking on this site for his rels. I have an Agnes Jane Wyatt, who was born in NZ in 1880. Her parents were William Wyatt and Annie Woods. On Agnes' marriage certificate, she got married at the home of her father, William Wyatt, in Hamilton West, NZ. She married John James Richards in 06 Aug 1900. I am pretty certain that she is the one of the extra sisters that you are looking for. Her age fits in with the age of the youngest daughter  (aged 23) when Anne Wyatt died in 1903. You can find the reference to her birth on the NZ BDMs website: http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz along with her parents names. John and Agnes had 4 daughters: Mildred, Florence, Gertrude and Rona. Paige (2nd cousin's husband) in descended from Gertrude and lives in Wellington. Let me know what you think and if you need any extra info on this one.

Hi there!

I realise that the last post for this was a while ago but I think I could help you a lot if you haven't already gone further.  I am a direct relation of George Bell Proud through George Wellford Proud and his wife Mary Lomas Wood, their child Beatrice Amelia Proud and her husband Stephen Cardnal Ellis who had Beatrice (May) Ferguson Ellis married to Kevin Anthony Courtney.  Their daughter Beatrice Joan Courtney married John Edward Herbert Mason and these are my grandparents.

Not only that but my partner is related to James Noy and Ruth Matilda Wyatt through their son William Edward Noy who married Hattie Goodhue .  Their daughter - May Elizabeth Noy married Douglas Lyndon Jordan and these are my girlfriends grandparents.

Small world.

I have a huge amount of information about the descendants of George Bell Proud however I do not have a lot of information about Charles Proud and Mercy Albinia Wyatt beyond a generation or so.

If you would like to get in touch you can email me at (*) and we can share information.

A relative has also written a book called "Proud to be an Ellis" which surrounds the genealogy of Beatrice Amelia Proud and Stephen Cardnal Ellis which you may find interesting.

Cheers,
James

Hi James

The quickest way to send someone a PM (especially if it is someone who has posted on this thread) is to click on the "scroll" (bottom left) under their user name.
If they are online, it will be bright green, as in this image, otherwise a dull/darker green.

Hello again to everyone!

I am just re-doing all my research on this WYATT family as I had a computer crash a while back and thought I'd check back to these Rootschat posts to make sure I had all my clues!! ...since my last post, I have found all sorts of things but I see I have 2 relatives trying to make contact...I will PM both

I have loads of information now on all the daughters born to William WYATT & Annie WOODS.

Edith WYATT married Henry Hector HUTT and lost 5 of her 9 children in a tragic house fire in 1906 at Te Awamutu. I also need to re-do my HALIDAY info, but that shouldn't take long. I have a picture of Henry H HUTT and some newspaper articles to share.

Many thanks to you all

Gosh, it is almost a year since I posted here.  For some reason the notification of your post, went to my spam folder.  It was just luck that I actually checked the spam folder and saw it, as usually I tend to forget to check spam, and items get automatically ditched!

Since my post, I have done quite a bit of work on the NOY's, and the ancestory of James NOY in Cornwall ENGLAND.  I was suprised how much was available.

I would still be interested in exchanging anything, that might be of interest, so let me know.  Although I have since filled in  many of the gaps abbout the NOY's in NZ, many still remain.

Some where you mentioned NOY's in AUSTRALIA.  I assume it was William Henry NOY and Mahala (nee BOLITHO), buried at Blackwood WESTERN AUSTRALIA.  Would you have any information on their descendents?  I am assuming that he is the same William Henry NOY, a full brother to James NOY; but have found nothing so far that explicitly verifies the connection, or their settling in Australia.

Hi Maurice, and a warm welcome to RootsChat.

'PM' is short for Personal Message. Once you make another two posts this facility will become active and you can exchange messages 'off-line'.

If you look below a poster's name on the left-hand side of a post you will see a scroll icon. If it's green they're on-line, if not they aren't. Click on this icon to send an individual a personal message.
