Hi!
I wonder if anyone can help me?
I'm trying to track down my g grandfather's parents. James Noonan settled in Charleville where he married Elizabeth O'Riordan around 1815 and had a shop on the main street which is still there to this day.
They had 4 children, Michael, Seamus, Noreen and my grandfather, John (known as Jack ).
There is a family myth that he was in an orphanage in Dublin before coming down to County Cork but I'm not sure how true this is.
Having a nightmare trying to get anywhere with possible parents. Please help!

Just to clarify and because I'm an eejit.....
James NOONAN married Nora O'RIORDAN around 1915 NOT Elizabeth in 1815
Too many names and too much research - names and dates are blending into one :D
Does this change things?!
Thank you

a few details from Trade Directories for you to think about...
The surname seems to have been listed as Nunan - I dont dont see any spelt Noonan around Charlesville..
Pigots 1824 :
no Noonan/Nunan businesses listed in Charleville
Theres a few Nunan entries around Cork City and county (including a James Nunan, Main-street, Clonakilty - Carpenter) but none near Charleville.
Slaters 1846 :
Eliza Nunan , Main st, Charleville - Linen & Woolen Draper
Denis Nunan, Broad st, Charleville - Butcher
Slaters 1870 :
Daniel Nunan, Main st, Charleville - Baker
Thomas Nunan, Main at, Charleville - Painters & Glazier
William Nunan & Sons, Main st, Charleville - Cattle Dealers
Slaters 1881 :
Daniel Nunan, Main st, Charleville - Baker
Daniel Nunan (& wholesale), Main st, Charleville - Grocer
(Daniel also listed under the sections for Ironmongers &
Hardwaremen, Seed Merchants, Tallow Chandler &
Oil merchant.)
Thomas Nunan, Main st, Charleville - China, Glass &
Earthenware Dealer
Slaters 1894 :
Daniel Nunan, Charleville - Grocer & Baker

Thanks for this Shane -
Perhaps it confirms James wasn't originally from Charleville.
Do your sources show any landowners/farmers? Wondered if you could check for any Noonans around Charleville in those professions?
Or could you check for O'Riordan/O'Gorman in Charleville itself? The shop wasn't originally in the Noonan name.
Thanks so much!

the older directories dont include many many of the farmers... but I'll have a look
Shane

for some reason no farmers are listed in the directories under Charleville from 1824 up to 1894 - seems to just be towns-people and businesses.
Other places I have looked at include long lists of farmers from about 1880, so I presume they are included under a nearby parish or district - I'll see if I can figure which entry the could be under..

Hi
Don't know if this will help but you might like to look at the 1911 census which is now on line and it's free to search.
Here's the link.

On the subject of Charleville, I wonder if anybody has any information on the Fitzgerald/Biggane families of Broghill.
Any information would be brilliant.
Thank you

you should not include details of potentially living people, so it might be an idea to edit the details of your post.
The marriage of the people you mention is included on the familysearch civil index (http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347) as are a number of their children - the mothers maiden name is included in the index for these years.
I can pm the details to you .. if you have trouble finding them ..

Hi Shane
Thank you for your response, I have edited my post which will hopefully now be ok.
I have found the records that you have indicated but that's as far as I have been able to go.

Although about 20 minutes drive from charleville town, you could maybe check areas in Tullylease, Freemount/Allow as these are all addresses in charleville here is a link to a family with a james nunan. the spelling varies between noonan and nunan in my husbands family half his siblings are noonan and the other half are nunan. With regard to businesses in charleville there is currently a JR Noonan sports and toy shop don't know if they are anything to do with what you are looking for.

Hi Ursula -
JR Noonan is my family's business :-)
Haven't found any links with Nunans in the areas you mentioned, but appreciate your post :-) Will check with my uncles to see if they know of a link. I recognise the name Muckenagh, though!
Thank you for the link.
