Post by: kayceebee5 on Thursday 08 January 09 17:27 GMT (UK)
Hello,

Can someone please lookup a baptism for James Leather born about 1811 Newton Lancashire.
In the 1881 census he was living at 32 Park Road Back, Parr, St Helens.
Thanks,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

Just looked at the PR's for Newton-in-Makerfield and found the following:

St. Peter, Newton-in-Makerfield
B. 03/05/1805
Bapt. 26/05/1805
James s. James & Jane Leather

B. 16/09/1817
Bapt. 19/10/1817
James s. Esther Leather, Newton, spinster

I didn't find anything bang on 1811 - the closest I could find was 1805 and 1817. There were quite a few Leather records in the St. Peter's PR's.

I've also got Monumental Inscriptions for St. Peter's in Parr. Do you know what year round about your James died?

Best Wishes, Kirsty  :)

Just checked MI's for Parr but the only James Leather's I could find were born too late to be your James. I also checked burials for St. Peter's, Newton up to 1901 and didn't find any James' born around the right time.

Sorry, Kirsty  :)

P.S. Nothing in St. Helens or Newton-le-Willows cemetery either  :(

Hello Kirsty,

Thank you very much for replying to my request.

I can find James Leather (1811) in the 1881 Census living in Parr with his son James Leather(1858) but not in the 1891 census.

I have found a death that may fit.

James Leather estimated birth 1812 died age 73 registered 3rd quarter 1885 Prescot Lancashire Vol.8b page 483.

Thanks again,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

I'm going to do a little more digging and see if I can find anything extra for you.

For all the peepers, the 1881 census:
Source Citation: Class RG11; Piece 3738; Folio 19; Page 32
32 Park Road Back, Parr, Lancashire
Head - James LEATHER - 70 (c. 1811) - Newton - Labourer
Son (head) - James LEATHER - 23 (c. 1858) - St. Helens - Miner
Wife - Ann LEATHER - 20 (c. 1861) - Widnes
Son - James LEATHER - 1 month (c. 1881) - St. Helens

From St. Peter's, Parr I've found the following two grave book records plus a MI mentioning a James LEATHER:

Grave Purchased by RICHARD LEATHER
JAMES LEATHER 5 September 1866 2 yrs
RICHARD LEATHER 21 November 1881 41 yrs
ALICE PARR 9 October 1922 81 yrs
JOSEPH LEATHER 10 March 1926 59 yrs

RICHARD and ALICE LEATHER
JAMES LEATHER
September aged 2 yrs 3 mnths
RICHARD LEATHER
19 November 1881 aged 41 yrs
ALICE PARR
Wife of WILLIAM PARR
9 October 1922 aged 81 yrs
JOSEPH LEATHER
Son of above
3 March 1926 aged 59 yrs
[/b]

Grave Purchased by Mr LEATHER
MARY E LEATHER 25 March 1889 3 yrs
THOMAS SARBUTTS 16 December 1891 64 yrs
MARY ELLEN LEATHER 21 September 1894 5 mnths
HENRY LEATHER 4 November 1895 6 yrs
ANN ELLEN LEATHER 23 March 1896 2 mnths
ESTHER ELLEN LEATHER 10 September 1901 12 mnths
ALICE MAUD LEATHER 18 September 1902 8 mnths
JAMES LEATHER 23 May 1933 76 yrs
SARAH ANN LEATHER 9 May 1939 78 yrs

The above grave purchased by Mr. LEATHER does not appear to have a headstone. The James LEATHER buried in this grave is about the right age to be the son of your James but it may just be a coincidence. The entry from the burial register for this burial may help or, of course, the death certificate.

I've also found the following burial at St. Peter's, Newton:
22/11/1836
James LEATHER, Newton, age 64

Could the above be a relation of your James born c. 1811?

That's all from me for now but if there is anything else I can look up for you please don't hesitate to ask.

Best Wishes, Kirsty  :)

Hello Kirsty,

Thank you again,

My Grandfather was Joseph Leather (1892) the son of James Leather (1858) and Ann Leather (Sarbutts) so the information you have provided matches. Thomas Sarbutts was Ann's Father.
In 1881 they were living next door.
Some of the graves match with my Grandfather's siblings also, so it helps tie up some loose ends.

Regards,

Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

I'm really glad to have found a match for you (you're very welcome). Grave stones and grave book records are really useful for tieing up loose ends and helping make family connections so hopfully this will keep you going for a while.

All the best, Kirsty  :)

Hello again Kirsty,

The date quoted on the grave purchased, is that, the purchase date, burial date or death?

regards,

Kevin.

Good question Kevin.

As far as I'm aware they are the dates of death. They are definitely not purchase dates.

The problem is that discrepancies have been found between the grave book records and the grave stones. For example, if you compare the dates on the grave purchased by Richard Leather and then the subsequent grave stone there doesn't seem to be a rigid method or pattern. I think it's fare to assume there are some errors.

They only way to be absolutely sure is to compare all sources of data;
Grave book record
Headstone
Burial register
Death certificate

It's a bit of a pain I know. Hope this helps. Best Wishes, Kirsty  :)

I hope this gets through to you.

My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Leather - one of the children of James Leather (married to Ann) born in 1857.  James (James's eldest son and married Margaret) emigrated to USA just before the outbreak of the first world war, and one of his children, Evelyn, still lives in Auburn and is the only child of James alive.

Are you a relative of the Leather family ?

Hi Marie,

I'm not a Leather myself but I can help with look-ups. Is there anything in particular you were looking for? Hopefully Kevin (a Leather descendant) will also get notification of your post and be in touch.

Best Wishes, Kirsty  :)
