Hello
Can anyone help please? My credits for ScotlandsPeople have expired!
There is one match for the birth (and christening) on 7 November 1850 for Agnes Finlay MALCOLM daughter of John and *Catharine* in Dundee, Angus.
Agnes Finlay MALCOLM is on the IGI with parents John MALCOLM and Catharine Stewart BARRIE but John and Catherine did not marry until 1852!?!
Catherine's first husband was John FINDLAY whom she married in 1849. John had died by the time of the 1851 Census but that does not explain why John MALCOLM (Catherine's second husband married in 1852) is listed as the father of Agnes in 1850???
Would the record (1 credit) on the index supply any additional information that might explain this anomaly?
Thank you for any help/suggestions.
Kind regards and God bless you,
Lynne
UPDATE 15 January 09 Was "ScotlandsPeople help please - MALCOLM"
Have now obtained the image but there is no explanation for the anomaly!?! ::) Just gives Agnes Finlay's parents as John MALCOLM, Joiner, and Catherine Stewart BARRIE.
Agnes would have been conceived abt 2 1/2 months after her mother married John FINDLAY on 16 November 1849 and was born 17 months before her Mum married John MALCOLM on 16 June 1852!!!
Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!

Hi ev
Thank you for your response.
Agnes FINDLAY (4 months, born Dundee) and her Mum (22 years, born New Scone, Perthshire) - who was listed as <Stuart> FINDLAY not Catherine, which was her middle name - were at 12 Nelson Street, Mcdonalds New House, Dundee staying with Catherine Stewart FINDLAY nee BARRIE's widowed mum Agnes <BARRY> (51 years, born Kinoul, Perthshire) and other siblings Amelia, John and James.
Have not got any information on John MALCOLM in 1851 as yet. He was born 6 January 1829 in Creich, Fifeshire and was a joiner by trade.
Any information on John in 1851 would be much appreciated please!
Thank you for your interest. :D
Kind regards and God bless you,

Do you have the names of John Malcolm's parents?
EDIT: from the date you gave I have found his parents on IGI as ANDREW MALCOLM and JANET LISTER

Andrew Malcolm Head Mar 49 Sawyer born Abdie, Fife
Janet Malcolm Wife Mar 49 Kilmany, Fife
Janet Malcolm Daur U 16 Leuchars, Fife
George Malcolm Son 13 Scholar Collessie, Fife
Elizabeth Malcolm Daur 7 Scholar Collessie, Fife
John Malcolm Son Visitor U 22 House carpenter journeyman Crieff, Perthshire
Andrew Malcolm Son visitor U 19 House carpenter journeyman Leuchars, Fife
hope this helps,

Hi Claire
Thanks very much!
That will definitely be John visiting with his family although his birthplace is wrong?!
Thanks again! :D

Hi All
Lynne, I don't think you haven't actually found a death date for John Finlay from what you have said. The only thing I can think of is that he died fairly soon after marrying Catherine and before Agnes was conceived. From the OPR entry you have for Agnes' birth it would appear that John Malcolm is the father of Agnes, born before parents' marriage in 1852.

Hello Monica
Right on all counts! :D
It just seems so strange that Catherine would have a relationship with someone a scant two months or so after her first marriage if John FINDLAY did die suddenly? We had been wondering if John MALCOLM might have just said he was the Dad to save some embarrassment for Agnes and Catherine if Agnes' Dad had been dead for a while? According to my cousin Agnes was always known in the family as [nee] FINDLAY and not MALCOLM.
A burial for John FINDLAY would certainly help but not sure how to go about finding it? Does anyone have any suggestions please?
Thanks Monica!
Kind regards and God bless you,

Hi Lynne
I did have a look on this site to see whether there was a possible death for John Findlay but I couldn't easily see it:

Noticed about John that they had the wrong birthplace! I have him as being born on 6 Jan 1829 at CREICH, Fife! (keeping in mind that in those days many people could not read or write and the registrar wrote down what he - thought - he heard - hence CRIEFF!!) This is part of our family history if you want to get in touch!

Catherine was married TWICE! She married a John Findlay, who died in 1851.... and they had a daughter Agnes Findlay. She remarried in 1852 to John Malcolm! Hoping this sorts out the problem! Contact me if you need to! This is my family history too!
