There was a Black Boy Lane in the c15th but I have no idea how long it survived. (see http://www.dur.ac.uk/r.h.britnell/Portrait%203.htm) It was off St Botolph St, parallel to Eld Lane which still exists with some historic buildings. There is an alleyway in that position now but very run down and definitely not historic. Magdalen Street is correct and still exists. Old Heath is the area behind - sorry South of - Magdalen St. You don't say what date census you refer to but I believe the area was largely built up in the late 1800's. There was a Baker's Row on the north side of Magdalen Street but it has long since disappeared and I think is now an open yard. I don't know of a Nevill's Yard but I believe there used to be an agricultural business called Nevill's, in Magdalen Street, again probably disappeared long ago with redevelopment (Magdalen St has`been 'attacked' in a very haphazard manner over decades and is now the least attractive part of old Colchester). Maidenburgh Street still exists, in the Dutch Quarterand close to the Castle. It still contains several historic buildings but I don't think Fencers, which was an Inn (see http://www.camulos.com) could now be recognized. Childwell Alley still exists on the north side of Magdalen Street, not far from the site of Baker's Row, although I confess I had to look it up on the map. St Johns Green still exists but Dorset or anything like it beats me. See the Morant map above. 'Ipsman' Road was most probably Ipswich Rd. If you have a copy of the census image you might see it differently to the transcriber. Hope this helps but I am sure you will get better info from someone who has lived in Colchester a lot longer than me.

Hi Barry,
Newbie here so please bear with ;
My late father was from Colchester in 1923 (Clay Lane, Mile End),and then moved to 128 Magdalen Street around 1930, ..i googled the address and found you post.
Would you know if the house is still there ?, i live in Bedford and am not familiar with Colchester 2009, any tips on any archives and photo's of that period..and up to WW2. My father must have spent a lot of time in around Colchester ..they finally moved to the village of Weeley.
I am currently researching my family history .(initially on my fathers side) any help or advice on this would be much appreciated.

Hi there
If its the same side as the church that was on the corner of Brook St then there is a good chance that it is still there. However I've not lived in Colchester for a few years and Magdalen street was an area of re-generation :(, it would have been a small two up two down terrance housed if thats any help

I wouldn't come back again Ed!! There have been many changes with a few modern buildings but that has only served to highlight the general run down appearance of the remainder. Not a pretty site/sight

Sadly, 128 Magdalen Street no longer exists. Several of the houses have been replaced by a single large modern building.
Did you know that Clay Lane is now known as Turner Road? It still exists but the town end has been substantially altered with new roads and estates, so I doubt if your father's house still exists.
Re hints and tips? It depends how much of a Newbie you are. If you really are just starting out then go to your library and see if they have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk. That will lead you into many avenues and helpful guides. There are many good books on researching family history and I am sure your library will have a good selection. The most comprehensive is Ancestral Trails by Mark Herber. The other main sources of on line help are Roots Chat, http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php RootsWeb http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/
On line free sources include the Mormon Church http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp and free BMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
If you can manage a visit to Colchester, the library has an excellent Local History Section including early large scale OS maps. We used to have our own Records Office but sadly, Essex CC closed that last year and all records such as parish registers are now in Chelmsford http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/login.asp?Start=True&ERO=2
Finally, don't hesitate to ask me or anyone on any of the forums if you need more help or information.
Good luck,
Barry

Hi Barry,
Long shot i know but do you recognise this area/cottage from the Colchester area ?
Anyone looking as well ..not sure how to appeal to the whole Rootsweb community ???
thanks
Derrick
-
Yes, it is a long shot!! A cottage very typical of the hundreds around this area, but there are a few clues. Definitely not Colchester town but might not be far away because it is on a hill overlooking rolling countryside - a view not dissimilar to the one I am looking at now from my window on the edge of the town centre towards Mile End or Myland as it is now known - which you mentioned!! You said you had no date for the photo but it cannot be that old (colour! - and it looks in pristine condition) in which case it might still be standing. Could you even hazard a guess for date? Let me have a think about this and try to nail a likely area and then keep an eye open as I drive around
Regards,
Barry

Barry,
My father lived in Clay Lane..No 20, but that was in the 30's and 40's ,,,i have no idea of what the house/cottages were like then (they were not an affluent family)...currently researching the Mile End area ...do you have any idea of a good reference to area at that time ?
thanks

This site is a little help:
http://www.mylandparishcouncil.gov.uk/aboutTheParish.php
Search Essex CC records (http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/login.asp?Start=True&ERO=2 log in as guest) for both Myland and Mile End and remember Clay Lane has been Turner Rd for many years.
There were brickworks at the town end of Clay Lane (hence the 'Clay') - perhaps your father worked there? I will look in the library local history collection for you but it could be some weeks - they are closing next week for 2 months refurbishment! Search the Essex Library catalogue http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/guc.jsp?channelOid=15524&guideOid=15195&guideContentOid=18563 and if there is anything there your local library should be able to get it on loan.

Looks like it towards Langham/Ardliegh way, to me especailly with those hills

Hi Ed,
thanks for the tip..could you have a look at this link
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=Ardliegh+way+colchester&fb=1&split=1&sll=51.916306,0.963354&sspn=0.058304,0.136662&ei=A-BxSdLlG4KGogPmlNDHBw&cd=2&cid=51916306,963354,10166089417757756467&li=lmd
Its a google map of Ardliegh way ...i wondered what you meant by the connection,,is it a new build area ? had look at Camulos and found some very good photo's of Colchester pre 40's were very interesting.
Cheers

Hi there
I used to live in the UK and I lived in the Ardleigh area, I also have relatives that live/lived there two and there are a number places that that could have been looking at the house and the hills in the background. The area on the map that you put the link to has a few houses but most of them are from 1950ish thats not to say that there arent older houses there as well. From memory the most likely places would be some where Stratford St Mary/Dedham way, its a little hilly there, the other place is towards Manningtree between there and Lawford. there too are some hilly places with cottages, if anyone know that area there is a couple of resturants one called Le Talbooth forgotten the name of the other resturant but its on the other side of the A12 and stands on a hil.
Hope this is of help
Ed
-
If the weather clears I will take a little pleasure drive around Ardleigh and keep a look out, but I don't think the hills in the photo are steep enough to be Dedham Vale. Problem is the view and cottage is so typical of this area it could be anywhere. We really need some more clues please Derrick?

A breakdown of possible area's that the cottages are in for ref -
20 Clay Lane (now Turner Rd) Birth place of my father & home to the Wiltshire family (Head of the family was my Grandfather Arthur 1920's >
Weeley village,,,the Wiltshire family lived at 4 or 5 Thorpe Rd around 1935, (Mr Flint was thier neighbour ).....They then moved to the western end of the village to a house on the Colchester Rd just past the Black Boy pub (still there) in around 1940..My Uncle Frank 85yrs, remembers that his Dad Arthur rented the house form a farmer name of Mr Lord from Bromley village. (tenuous i know but its piecing it all together )
Severall's Hospital area any time after 1920's >....my late Grandfather Arthur Wiltshire was a patient there in 1958 > ( I have letters that he wrote to my father in 1958....The photo was in the same keepsake box.!!!! Might be a complete red herring but filling in some big gaps :)
As an aside...my Mother's family were residents of The Limes (a Victorian double fronted detached house next door to the Blackboy Pub ..west side)
spk soon

Derrick, I have loaded some high resolution photos to my public Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/essexhistorian/ because of the size limit on Roots. Click on this link and you should have access
Probably found 20 Turner Rd/Ash Lane. Seems to be the right vintage which surprised me because that area is mostly very modern large scale housing developments. It was also at the opposite end of the road to that expected, furthest from the town. Just hope there hasn't been a renumbering exercise.
Found The Limes Weeley which is not quite next door to The Black Boy, as my clumsy stitched panorama shows, but it may have been back in your father's day.
May have found No 4/5 Thorpe Rd. Thorpe Rd is mostly rural with a scattering of houses, no numbers, just names except for a row of terraced cottages, which are numbered 1 to 7. They are some way along Thorpe Rd out of the village. The house at the beginning of Thorpe Rd, which I thought would most likely be No 4/5, is a farm and the present occupants assured me it did not have a number. So it looks as if the terrace is the one you want.
The mystery thatched cottage? No sign in the Weeley area. This web site http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/default.aspx is a good one to search and there are 88 Listed cottages with thatched roofs in the Colchester area!!!
Good luck, Barry

just used the 1911 site and one address is transcribed as 9 Lane Lane, Colchester!!! :(
Find another connection at 19 Old Heath, Colchester
and
11 Osborne Street, Colchester
I have sent a request that the transcription error be looked at - not holding my breath!
:(
-
Lane Lane will be Land Lane, near Priory Street
-
thanks for that - still not heard from 1911 people!
