Hi
I have a William Cornelius Coffey born 24 December 1894 in Gleniti, died 24 July 1965, sitting in my tree.
No connection to me ... but married into a well known local family in the Papakura area, which connects to my tree.
Does he fit into your tree?
Cheers

On further investigation William could well be a great uncle of mine. My grandmother Mary (and her sister Ellen) did have a brother William Cornelius (full personal details of which are unknown to me) who would fit the correct time frame as Mary (older sister to William) died 1969 in Hamilton and buried at Waiuku Cemetry. There was also an older brother, Michael James Coffey.
Do you have any other information on William which you think would be useful to me?
I'm sure William is a correct link to my family and I have quite a lot of family information if any of your relatives want any on the Coffey and Bryers family tree.
-
Yeah, BRYERS is a family line, hence the COFFEYs
Patrick, Michael James, Mary, William and Ellen
sound right ?
What other info do you have ?
:)

Do you have any other information on William which you think would be useful to me?
The only other information I have on William is his death place, which is One Tree Point, Northland, and his marriage date of 2 April 1930, Kawakawa, Bay of Islands. No Children listed ...... don't know if there were any ..... but I haven't been given any.
I don't need any information on William, as he isn't my main link, but his wife - Mona, her fathers 3 siblings married into my family.
This also happens to be my friends clan as well .... will ask what she has.
Cheers

Hi,
Just been going over my info for William Cornelius Coffey, my source got it from the Probate Index:
Agency BBNY
Series 10440
Box 42
Record 172/1965
Filed on 30 July 1965 in Whangarei. At time of death he was a Retired Farmer.
In 1917 he was living in Maromaku as a Labourer, and had the Military call up. NZ Gazette 1917 page 546. He was listed as a First Reservist.
Might pay to get the death notice to see what that says.
As he was born in South Canterbury wonder if it is worthwhile getting in touch with the NZSG Branch for more information i.e. school records etc or putting up another post asking for someone to do a look up for you.
Cheers
KHP :)

Cornelius COFFEY m Katherine BRYERS 1885
had 7 kids,
Twins .. stillborn
Patrick .. who died young
Michael James .... died WW1 m PARAONE-KAWITI
Mary
William Cornelius
Ellen
none born in South Island ,
-
So which family does the William Cornelius Coffey/Cossey belong to?
I was given Gleniti South Canterbury for his birth?
Confusing ???
-
I got Towai
for W C COFFEY who married Mona COSSEY
guess have to toddle off and check the bdms, I'm in the middle of transfering files to the master, so wasn't going to check up all these for a few weeks, ::)
the Cornelius COFFEY on the WW1 file is not William Cornelius COFFEY who married COSSEY.
-
Poor you :(
Mind you lots of dates and info that was given to me didn't match up with mine .... mine were verified with certificates over the last 30 years.
Think I might pay a visit to Papakura and have a gander at the indexes.
-
Hi to you both - kiwihalfpint and mk2_zephyr
Yes this is one and the same family!!! Thank you for your persistance and help.
mk2_zephyr - your family 'tree' is what I have. Mary and William are brother and sister - Mary is my grandmother! Who are you related to - maybe Ellen?
kiwihalfpint - the birthdate you gave for William is in fact (I think) Ellen's birthdate - I will keep plugging at this and see what I come up with from other avenues. William's birthdate is the only one of this part of the family I don't have.
Father - Cornelius Charles Coffey, son of Michael and Mary (nee Mangan) Coffey is the relative I want to follow through with as I have many discrepancies with his legal documents as to his actual birthdate (his marriage certificate, entries on his daughters' birth certificates, his will and his death certificate all give a different year).
I am also interested in finding out what ship he arrived on - possibility leaving from from Liverpool.
I will keep delving and will post what I fond to you both.
Thanks again
Pelorus

Phew!!! I was just about to bury my head in the sand ;D
Glad I was a bit of a help :)

Hi Pelorus,
Its your grt grandmother who is related Katherine BRYERS, :)
yep, keep digging everything will come up sooner or later, its another branch I have been slack on recently, :-\
I will check the BDMs for all this branch very soon ....
-
Hi Mk2_Zephyr
Katherine Bryers was my great grandmother hence Alf and Mary Baker my grandparents.
Where do you fit in the family?
If you come up with any other info on Cornelius Charles Coffey I would be most grateful.
The link with Kiwihalfpint's extended family is interesting - my research also states that William Cornelius Coffey was married to Mary Cossey and they had three daughters.
Thanks for your input

Hello everyone! My name is David Coffey, Michael James Coffey is my Great Grandfather,
I have also traced the Bryers family back as far as I could, I ended up at John Bryers, Birth: 1785, London, Greater London, England, United Kingdom, If you need more information get in touch.
Here is a link to find what ship everyone arrived on and more, https://www.houseofnames.com/coffey-family-crest
*One thing I am having a really hard time trying to find is anything on Charles Coffey (Father of Cornelius Charles Coffey / Michael James Coffey's Grandfather) If anyone has any information on him please let me know asap be it Parents, Birth, Death, Middle name, etc*
Stoked I came across this thread! Seems like I'm not the only one trying to piece everything together, As the youngest born in my family I decided to take up the role of historian and can probably help explain most of the connections between us all you have previously talked about,
When Cornelius Charles Coffey was born about 1857, in County Kerry, Ireland, his father, Charles Coffey, was 27 and his mother, Mary Mangen, was 27. He married Katherine Bryers in 1885, in New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. (Patrick Coffey 1886–1887, Michael James Coffey 1887–1918, Mary Coffey 1888–1960, William Cornelius Coffey 1891–1965, Ellen Coffey 1894–1972, It also looks like they had 2 other babies but they must have died very young age) His occupation is listed as a farmer in Maromaku, New Zealand. He died on 18 May 1918, in Kawakawa, New Zealand, at the age of 61, and was buried in Auckland, New Zealand?.
When Michael James Coffey was born on 20 July 1887, in Wellington, New Zealand, his father, Cornelius Charles Coffey, was 30 and his mother, Katherine Bryers, was 21. He married Nori Hokimate Kawiti Paraone about 1914, in Auckland, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. (Mereana Te Rope ( Toro Matiu) 1911–1913, Waina Te Hana ( Toro Matiu)
1912–1916, Te Riri Coffey 1914–1915, William Coffey 1916–2006),
In 1916, at the age of 29, his occupation is listed as railways, also labourer in Kaikohe, Northland, New Zealand. He died on 28 August 1918, in Bapaume, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 31, and was buried in Bapaume, Eure-et-Loir, Centre-Val de Loire, France.
