Hi,
I was wondering if anybody would be so kind as to look up the baptism of Charles BULPIT (and siblings if you have time), who was baptised in Hurstbourne Tarrant (or Priors or Andover - but I'm sure its Hurstbourne Tarrant) in 1844/1845. This would be very, very helpful in solving a long time mystery for me.
Many thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
I've found this family in Andover.
Parents: David & Eliza Bulpit(t)
Ellen b 16 Sep bapt 24 Oct 1841
Charles b 21 Sep bapt 27 Oct 1844
Sophia b 22 Nov 1846, bapt 3 Jan 1847
William b 29 Sep bapt 19 Nov 1848
George b 17 Mar bapt 21 Apr 1850
Harriet Elizabeth b 10 Jun bapt 16 Jul 1854
There was also a Charles Bulpitt baptised in Romsey in 1844, parents Charles & Elizabeth, but that's a fair way from your area of interest.
I can't see any Bulpitt baptisms in Hurstbourne Tarrant :-\

Hi Nell,
Yes, I'd seen that census return but unfortunately I don't believe its my Charles. I'll try and explain the brick wall I've got and maybe somebody can see past it - I've been starring at it for over a year now with no luck !! Here goes.
Charles BULPIT is my great(x2) Grand father. He married Caroline NEWMAN in 1876. On the marriage certificate his father was given as George BULPIT.
I have some census returns for Charles and they give the following :-
1881 Age 32 Birthplace : Andover(HAM)
1891 Age 41 Birthplace : Hurstbourne(HAM)
1901 Age 54 Birthplace : Hurstbourne(HAM)
As these are after his marriage I'm sure I've got the right returns as Caroline is present in all and my great grandfather William appears in them.
So, what about Charles before his marriage ?
Well, there is a Charles BULPIT in Hurstbourne Tarrant in 1871 census, Aged 25 with Birthplace : Hurstbourne, but he's only a lodger so no clues to his siblings or parents. I've assumed this is my Charles.
There is an 1861 census return with a Charles BULPIT, aged 15, Birthplace : Hurstbourne Tarrant which fits. He is living with his grandfather; so, assuming this is mine I can safely say his grand father is John BULPIT. Where is George in 1861 ? In 1851 there is a George, living with his father John, aged 24 in Andover, Birthplace : Hampstead Marshall(BRK). I've assumed this is mine too.
My sticking point is Charles birth/baptism and his mother. The Charles info you gave fits in terms of dates but father and place are wrong.
I've many other "slight" possibilities but cannot fit any George and wife and Charles together with any certainty.
Again, there is a birth in Andover reg district (which covers Hurstbourne) in Q4 1844 - but this is likely to be "your" Charles.
Any ideas or suggestions how I solve this I'd be extremely grateful to hear.
Many thanks
Chris

I dont know how much help i can be - if any, but i have the 3 printed editions of 'an everyday story of countryfolk' in my pocession, which is all about Hurstbourne Tarrant and the people in it. I have seen several times the mention of Bulpit and would be more than happy to have a look through the books for you, if you could tell me any further information on your particular line of bulpits that would give me an idea.
There are even photographs - allbeit black and white ones, you may get lucky and there could be one of a relative!

Hi,
Thank you for your kind offer. I've been stuck on my BULPIT line for 5 years now. My brick wall is a Charles BULPIT, he was my great-great grandfather. All his census returns say he was born in Hurstbourne between 1845 and 1850. I've had no luck whatsover tracing his birth/baptism. One line of thinking is that he was born out of wedlock so was not christened a BULPIT but took the name on after his mother married George BULPIT. I've tried to find all Charles's born in Hurstbourne between those dates but still no luck. Any link/help however small would be invaluable. Having lived in Andover during my childhood I'm aware how small Hurstbourne is so its frustrating that I cant solve this issue.
Thanks
Chris

Just a thought, have you tried looking at St Mary Bournes register for baptisms, as both St Peters church in SMB and the church in Hurstbourne T are intwinned and regularly share 'vicars'.
It would not surprise me if you found your relatives somewhere in the registers there.

Leanne

Hi Leanneb,
I know this is a longshot, (over 15 years since you made this comment haha), but I'm looking for a copy of 'An everyday story of countryfolk within Hurstbourne Tarrant', and saw your mention of it here. I would love to get in contact as I'm looking for more info on my 2x Great-Grandfather Henry Hutchins, and 3x Great-Grandfather George Hutchins, who were the Butcher and Innkeeper of Hurstbourne Tarrant back in the late 1800s.

Hampshire libraries have copies.

Thanks so much! This was a complete shot in the dark. I've just checked, and I've found the copies available already.
Very much appreciated!
