Hi, and happy new year everyone. I was wondering how to find a grave inscription. I am after the grave of Nicholas Roche buried in Kilnarath and was buried on the 8th Dec., 1816. and His wife Mrs. Letitia Roche of Vancluse died on 11th March 1833
and is buried at "KILNERATH".
I am hoping it mentions his fathers name on the grave stone or a brother possibly.
does anyone know where Vancluse is/was?
cheers

There is some information about Kilnerath graveyard at this site. It seems it has recently been cleaned up and restored. Also there is a mention of grave inscriptions so perhaps if you contact a member of the committee responsible they may be able to give you further leads.

Hi,
The headstone inscriptions for Kilnerath are available from Tipperary libraries, local studies section. They are extremely helpful, even for an over the phone query. I am sure you already have this information, Nicholas Roche of Vauchluce was married to Leticia Stepney, the widow of Herbert Stepney of Abington in 1800 in Newport, Co. Tipperary. Vauchluce is a hunting lodge situated on the Limerick side of the Limerick Tipperary border just of the road between Newport and Rearcross, in the townland of Toorolougher, Murroe, Co. Limerick. I have an interest in local history and would love to hear more from the Roche families time in the area.

Thanks for that information, yes I was hoping, that the head stone might reveal who the Father of Nicholas Roche was. which would allow me to get to the next stage of research, but its proving a little difficult.
I have Letitia Roche as stepney nee: Bourke. they were land owners in the area and I have some copies of the original land deeds (a few of them) up until 1832/3 when Edward and his wife Maria Theresa sailed to Sydney. I didn`t know it was a hunting lodge not a little town or village.

Hi hsweeney40. I just read your post from about 3.5 years ago, and hope you are still checking the posts. Which Tipperary library with access to the headstone inscriptions for Kilnarath graveyard is closest to Kilnarath civil parish? I leave for my annual research trip to Ireland on 3 October 2012 and plan to visit the Kilnarath area on 7 and 8 October. After 40 years, I believe I now have the proof that my GLEESON family lived in the townlands of Gurrane and Cappadine in Kilnarath civil parish. They originally were in the RC parish of Newport, but switched to Ballinahinch RC when it was started about 1839. I do not believe their residences changed. My GLEESONs emigrated to Markham, Ontario, Canada about 1849. I believe my John GLEESON, bapt. 4 Apr 1829, son of Michael GLEESON and Norry McKeogh of Cappadine, is a 1st cousin to Mortimer (Murtaugh) GLEESON, bapt. 5 May 1828, son of William GLEESON and Judy CORCORAN of Gurrane. I am hoping that the Kilnarath gravestone inscriptions may help confirm this. Any guidance is appreciated.

Thanks for the assistance. I look forward to visiting the Thurles library. Is the Kilnarath graveyard the Church of Ireland graveyard? Are other local cemeteries, such as the Ballinahinch RC cemetery, also included in the records at the Thurles library? Is there a local historian knowledgeable about Kilnarath civil parish who lives in the area, works at the library, or has written a book? Thanks again!

Can't answer all your queries but the listing I have of Graveyard records held in Thurles Library shows the holding they have for Kilnarath parish include Kilnarath and Ballinahinch Graveyards.
A couple of sites re Kilnarath that may be of interest.

Hi EBR
I have checked the online transcripts of headstones in Kilnarath cemetery but could not find any evidence of Letitia nor Nicholas Roche. Can you please help me with their dates of death? Where did you find their dates of death please? Thanks in advance Kathryn
