Hi , Could anyone tell me if Thomas Street in Garston Liverpool is still there?
I have looked on a map and found a Sir Thomas Street is this the same one?
Also does anybody know where I can find pictures of this street?
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks Paul
-
Hi
They are not the same streets. Sir Thomas St is in the city centre. Have you tried Multimap
www.multimap.com

Yes I looked on the mutimap but couldnt find it, someone told me it was off King Street which I have found but no Thomas Street came off it unless it was demolished?
Thanks for your help

Do you have a rough idea of the year? I have the 1871 census on CD but the only Thomas St was in a different area of Liverpool
Liverpool PRO have a list of all demolished streets and in a lot of cases, photos were taken before demolition
Might be worthwhile giving them a ring

Hi Paul
Thomas Street, Garston, was off King Street. It is on the Speke and Garston Dock's plan of 1905 from Alan Godfrey Maps.
If you find King Street on Google Maps it was roughly where Thomas Close is now. The whole north side of King Street has been redeveloped. There was a road called Dale Street fanning out from the gas works with small rows of terraces linking it with King Street. Thomas Street had 10 houses on one side and 12 on the other.
Carole...Garston didn't join Liverpool until 1902 so it will not be on the Liverpool CDs.

Thanks for the information Ken, I thought it must have been demolished.
My Great Grandfather lived at number 12 according to the 1901 Cencus
Do you know what decade the area was cleared? or if there are any photos of the street?
Thanks Paul

Hi, Frank what a coincidence,i lived in 12 Thomas street from 1956/61 until i was 14,i have many memories ,i was only telling my grandkids the other day how lucky they are to be living in a nice warm house without the rustle of thousand of cockroaches, but i wouldn't change my childhood for theirs they don't seem to play out anymore, what a waste,i now live in North Wales but still go back home now and then to sit on the shore and reflect John

Hi John,
Great to hear from you , Do you have any photo's of the house or street you wouldn't mind sharing with me?
My Great Grandfather John Worthington lived there before he was married in 1904 then he moved to 18 Byron Street, Iam not sure if his mother continued to live at 12 Thomas Street.
Were you the last person to live there before the area was demolished?
Thanks Paul
-
Hiya Paul...I`m not butting in on your conversation , but just to let you know that that area was redeveloped about 1969......allan ;)
-
Oh thanks Allan I was unsure when the area was demolished

Hi Paul,I think we were the last to live at No 12, my dad had bought the house for £500 but we just walked away as the property was uninhabitabal i think the street lay empty until demolished,we went to live with my nan in Chesterton St for couple of years until we were moved to a new flat in Halewood .I'm sorry i havn't any photos of the street then as i don't think i knew anybody with a camera, but we were the first in the street with a telly.best regards John
-
Hi John
Am I right in thinking no 12 was a mid terrace house , two up two down? were there just houses on Thomas Street or were there any shops or pubs?
I have 4 addresses for my Grandfather 3 in Garston and 1 in Nottingham but all the houses have been demolished but Iam sure someone must have some photos somewhere.
Regards Paul

Hi Paul,Yes it was a terraced street 2up2down No 12 was in the middle with an entry or jigger along side,i know that the man living in the house before us(not sure when)had gassed himself in the oven, and he used to keep a donkey in the yard, the oven in the house was circa 1930 so possibly the one but we still had to use it as nobody had money for new in those days we always thought the house was haunted. There is a picture on the Garston society site that shows arial view of garston docks showing the rows of terraces including Thomas st, the rows on the left. cheers John. PS if you go on the yoliverpool site look for under the bridge there are some images on there

Not sure if this is of any help to anyone and I know I’m coming to this a bit late, but I’ve just found people in my family tree living at 10 Thomas Street, Garston from just after WW1 up to mid 1930’s. They were John Thomas Carter (1872-c1940) and his wife, Sarah Ann Carter (1866-1932). Sarah Ann was previously married to John Griffiths and was born Sarah Anna Horan. John Thomas Carter and Sarah were living in Woolton in 1911 and she was calling herself Carter but they didn’t marry until 1914. Sarah was buried at St Austin’s, Grassendale on Aigburth Road.

would you like me to go to St Austins Graveyard to see if there is a headstone for her ?? obviously I am in Garston with a username like Garstonite ...lol
looking at your post mentioning Aigburth Rd - are you in the Garston,Liverpool area ...?
-
Thanks for replying Garstonite.
I now live in Essex but was born in Liverpool and lived in Cranford Rd, just off South Mossley Hill Road, near Garston Park. I went to St Austin’s primary school and St Austin’s was our parish church.
Thanks for the offer re Sara(h)’s headstone. I do already have a photo of it on my Ancestry family tree, which I took on a visit back there.
Sara’s step mother Elizabeth (nee Wright) was my 2 x great grandmother. Elizabeth was first married at St Austin’s to John Wallace and they had a daughter, Rose soon after (my great grandmother).
I’m sure my Dad had no knowledge that his family were at St Austin’s, yet he’s buried there as well as Elizabeth his great grandmother and John Wright from Hale, Elizabeth’s father!
Rose married Henry Miller who was landlord of the Clock pub on the corner of Great Homer St. She sadly lost an eye opening a bottle of pop!
Good to have contact with a fellow Garstonite!
