Title: Thomas John Christie; Born approx 1860 died 1916 Belfast
Post by: trchilds on Sunday 04 January 09 04:14 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to get more information on my Great-Grandfather, Thomas John Christie, Born approx 1860 and died in Belfast 1916. I have located his name in the Belfast directories and he lived at 44 Sancroft in the late 19th century and then moved to 77 Palmer St.

I would like to find out any information. His exact birth info, his parents names, and where he is buried etc. He married my Great-Grandmother, Leah Douglas(s) 1862-1946, who was from around Paisley, Scotland.

I am from Canada so difficult to track down. Have been greatly frustrated in not being able to find alot of Irish family info. Want to locate cousins from Ireland if possible. Any help is Greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Tom

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Thomas and to find a record of his baptism you need to know where his family lived at the time and their religion.

The marriage certificate of Thomas and Leah should list his father's name and occupation but will not give the name of his mother.

Now for some good news- the 1911 census for Co. Antrim was just put online Dec.2008 and here's the entry for the family:

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Shankill/Palmer_Street/177542/

Leah is listed in the index as Sarah but is written as Leah on the actual return.

HI,

Thanks for the Brilliant replies and information. It helps alot. I understand that the Ulster Historical Society has records. Would they be a good source of a duplication of information already existing elsewhere?

As my Gr-grandfather died in 1916 I am wondering if there is cemetery lookup record as I would think he was buried in Belfast.

1911 census gives Thomas as born in County Antrim which may not be Belfast at all so you'd need more details to verify any baptism record found does actually belong to your Thomas Christie.

If you know where he's buried you could try contacting the cemetery.

Hi everyone,

Hoping you can help me again, you have all been brilliant! I found some more information and trying to investigate further. There are two mysteries I am trying to track down

1. My Grandfather, Joseph Christie (B Belfast 1899) had a younger brother, William Henry Christie born either 1904 or 1905. He died in an accident as a young boy. I am trying to track down when he was born and died.

2. I have located my Gr-Grandfather's (Joseph + Wm's Father) burial record. What it states on it is the following

Thomas John CHristie
Died 6th August 1916
Aged 55
And was Interred in Carmoney

Hi Tom

There are 2 Different graveyards in Carnmoney. Carnmoney Church of Ireland and Carnmoney Main and East.

Carnmoney Church of Ireland is in the grounds of the Church and you would need to contact the Church and get them to search for your burial.  Carnmoney Church Of Ireland Telephone  +442890800770   75 Church Road, Glengormley, Newtownabbey, BT36 6DJ

Carnmoney Main and East are run by the Local Council, Newtownabbey Borough Council.  They can be contacted at  info[at]newtownabbey.gov.uk   www.newtownabbey.gov.uk

Hi,
It is not relevant to your query but if you Google PRONI and select ULSTER COVENANT, select SEARCH THE COVENANT and enter Thomas' name you can view his actual signature.

To everyone,

Many thanks for your help. I have contacted the cemetery in Carmoney and found the information.

Also the Ulster Covenant information I was unaware of. I have looked it up and it is fascinating.
