Title: Date please and would this be Army uniform?
Post by: hilbury on Sunday 04 January 09 02:33 GMT (UK)
Hi all

I wonder if someone can tell me if the groom in this wedding pic is wearing an Army or other military uniform, please?

Also I know that the Gent on the left was born in 1872, and the lady next to him was born in 1886 (the grooms parents) so at best guess what year do you think this photo was taken.
I'm trying to figure out which member of the family the groom is...

I'm sorry this picture is not too clear, I don't have the original and this is a scan of a photocopy.

Any help or suggestions appreciated
Hilary

My guess is 1937. That would make him 65 and her 51. She looks older than 51 and he looks younger than 65: 1937 is a bit of a compromise guess.  The uniform makes it more likely to be 1939. Are you sure about those birth dates?

Hi Lodger-nz

Yes, I have both of their birth certificates.

Here is another pic of the same couple taken about 1920/21
(Sorry it is also a bad and blurred copy but you can see it's them)
I have the birth cert of the daughter standing between the parents, she was born in 1912 and was about 8 years old when this pic was taken...
You can see the wife hasn't taken to the aging thing very well  :-\
But looks a lot better once she put some weight on in later life

He certainly seems to be wearing well, so 1939 or 1940 is feasible.
Cheers and good luck with the uniform id.

Hmmmm - everything about that photo is screaming 50s at me. I hope I'm way off beam. Are you sure about your dates, Hilary?

Hi Mike...

Do you mean the first photo?
Yes, I'm certain about the dates from birth certs, not about when the first pic was taken...
You could be right, this marriage may have been 1949, but I'm not sure which of of two brothers the groom is, and there is a possibility of an earlier marriage (before 1949)

The second one is definitely 1920/21.

Hi Hilary

Yep - first photo. Especially the guy on the right. Then again, the woman's T-shirtish appearance. Well, everything about it. Mind you, I'm no expert and I'm prepared to be shot down by those who know better. Then again (again), if that's not 50s, then I think I must be the proverbial Dutchman. I await better judgement with bated breath  :)

If that photo was taken in 1949, the guy on the left would be 77. I just can't believe he is that old.  I also don't see any T-shirt material: The woman on the left appears to be wearing a blouse and the one on the right a dress and jacket, or possibly a dress with lapels over a camisole.  I suppose the bride could be wearing a T-shirt... ;)

The collars were not allowed to be open on those uniforms until late 1944.

My grandfather was born in 1877, my grandmother in 1884, and my dad in 1924, and he married in 1945, and I came along in 1968...so the dates are odd but not impossible! It is such that I am the only serving soldier with a grandfather that served in South Africa for the whole of the 2nd Boer War....

The only Dutch phrase I know is "soldaaten met lang haar" ;D

It is not impossible for a 1937 ptn uniform to be worn into the 1950s, but if I was getting married in uniform (I have done!!)  I would use my "best " kit...and therefore my parade best, and that would have been 1949 ptn. This uniform is not. 1937 ptn would only be used to "fight and die in" Ergo I reckon (quite strongly) that this is PRIOR to the 1949 ptn being issued.

I have pics of my maternal grandmother and her sisters in such dresses, and with such hairstyles...
