Title: Old map of Sutton, St Helens?
Post by: Nick B on Saturday 03 January 09 22:55 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have an old streetmap for Sutton St Helens from around 1900? I think this is now Merseyside, but it was part of Lancashire then - I have tried the Lancashire maps listed in this section but couildn't find anything.

I'm looking for the location of Railway Cottages, off Church Street; my g-g-grandfather and his family lived at No. 17 Railway Cottages from at least 1874 until 1901 or later, and his brother was at 7 Church Street in 1881, then Alma Street in '91. An Alma Street still exists, not sure if it's the same one?

Many thanks

Nick

No Church Street in Sutton,  but in St Helens, Lancashire was made up from 5 townships, and they joined in the centre of what became St Helens  at a point in Church Streeet by the present Parish Church.

Alma Street was in Peasley Cross and not Sutton as such but only in the registration district part of the town.

St Helens is a complex town to research because there are places that were registered as being in the district say Sutton when in fact the actual buildings could be near the town centre.

We were put in with the adminstrative County of Merseyside which was abolished in I think now 1984.   We were never ever taken out of the Palatine County of Lancashire and which I haave always used.

Nick  PM me if you need any further help regarding Sutton or Peasley Cross.  I have had family who lived in Sutton since 1690 to this day.

Well, thanks very much to everyone who replied!

In fact I made an error in my original message - it was 17 Railway Terrace, and not 'cottages' -  I got it mixed up with Railway Cottage which was in Alma Street.

In the 1970s we spent a rainy evening driving around Sutton, looking for an area my mum vaguely remembered being called 'Pudding Bank'. An elderly Policeman told us that he was probably one of the few people in Sutton to know that it was actually Pudding in't Bag, all gone by then, of course.

And there it is, on the Sutton Beauty & Heritage website - a map of Pudding Bag, with Railway Terrace and Church Street - Thanks again

Nick

The Pudding Bag was off Monastery Lane in Sutton off Robins Lane to get up the the railway bridge that you drove under to get to the Pudding Bag.

I am at the moment writing a history of this town and the townships.

I have been asked for a long time to start on one but have been put off by the  poor versions that have been done by people such as one that spent 30 minutes in the town and then took off with someone elses work not understanding the nature of the area and came out with something which made no sense at all.

Another one  had quite memorable buildings in the town in totally the wrong areas.

Don't want to write one up where people can go through it and say "that's wrong".

Hi Dancing Master,

Will your history be covering any of the potteries in that area eg Ravenhead, Thatto Heath etc etc?

TheOld Teapot Pottery is a memory from childhood that was at Ravenhead area.

Doulton had another pottery in Boundary Road. Also one in Gerrards Bridge (one of the slum areas) but inhabited by some hardworking people.   My grandparents had a shop down there, no point in have such a place in an area without the population to frequent it. had it near to the Glass works. plenty of people passing at least twice a day.

My book will cover the town consisting of the four townships, plus photographs, "stories"   "people"  old pubs, shops, and events, but not genealogy as such ie.  specific families.  people need to do that themselves.

I get many many phone calls from people I know from yesteryear,  asking me to put them out of their misery in that they cannot remember where something was, or when something happened.

Its interesting as well and good to help with "facts".

There were more glass manufacturers than potteries.  There was a pottery in Prescot  adjacent to St Helens.

From  being a very young child I was taken on walks, to different areas of the town and villages by my mother and as we walked she told me the history of the houses, and things we could see.   She also took me to visit family regularly and I knew all my cousins and second cousins very well, so that has been an enormous help.

We also wrote it down what we had seen on our walks as my grandmama who lived with us could not stand "idle hands" she said  "idlle hands get into mischief"  so I wrote, I sewed, knitted, crocheted, embroidered, took part in singing festivals, girl guides, went to Dancing Class  and appeared on stage.

We couldn't just sit and listen to the radio we had to have a project on the go as well.  Some of the things were given to people who had very little, who were customers of Grandmother.

As a result we made our presents for family an schoolfriends, and things for ourselves, I still have table cloths I embroidered when I was 13 years old.   which I know treasure very much.

My grandmother's name was marion atherton lyon; her father was elias lyon, director of peasley glass works. I have some old metal photographs in poor condition of people who are unidentified.
I am starting to investigate, and would appreciate any pointers as to images or information re; peasley glass works. [ "A Mersey Town in the Industrial Revolution" gives info on p 450 approx]

From the 1881 census that my GGG-f was the Licenced Victualler of a public house at 44 Elephane Lane, Thatto Heath, St. Helens.  My GGG-M was widowed but still there in 1891.   I'd love to find out what the name of the pub was.   Anyone any ideas?   It's lovely reading all the posts about St. Helens & Sutton -- I was born in Sutton, raised in Eccleston but have lived in Canada for the past 30 years.

Best wishes to you all...
