I had so much help with my first enquiry on this forum that I thought I'd try my biggest brick wall. My great(x3) grandfather William AIRRISS married Anne COLLIER on 4 Jan 1787 in Witney. Their banns were read in Ducklington. In the banns it specifies that William is a sojourner (temporary resident) of Ducklington and Anne is from Witney. William was, I believe, buried in Ducklington aged 67 in 1827. Future descendants of William often spell their name ARIS / AYRIS / ARRISS etc. I have had no luck whatsoever finding the baptisms of William or Anne - I've searched the Ducklington and Witney PR's. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

Hi Chris ...
I checked the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) from 1740 to 1760, checking all variants of the surname, and found marriages in the following parishes:
Banbury
Oxford
Witney
Cropredy
Henley
Bloxham
Caversfield
Upper Heyford
It may be worth getting the OFHS to do a search of their Baptism Index (1538-1851) to see if any Williams turn up in any of the above parishes.

:D I have forbears named Aris which became Ayris. They are from Marcham/Garford in Berks.
John Aris 1738 married Jane 1752 Garford Berks.
Children were:
John Ayris 27/5/1753
Mary Ayris 13/7/1755
Thomas Ayris 27/6/1762 (My forebear gt gt gt g/father) married Martha Collins Marcham 14/12/1783.(Yeoman farmer and business owner)
Jane Ayris 11/9/1757
William Ayris 28/12/1759
Ann Ayris 21/10/1764
Richard Ayris 1/4/1768
Wonder if this William is your William as this may be birth and your date may be christening.
Cheers, Hyjean

The name could also be Ayres, remember there was no standard spelling forms at this time.

Hi Hyjean,
That is extremely useful, thank you. I do have the PR for Marcham so can obtain the details. All I need to do is link William and his family with Witney / Ducklington. He has no further references in Marcham so this looks hopeful.
Thanks again.

Hi again Hyjean - I just replied somewhere else to tell you that Thomas's parents were John and Jane but I see that you already have that! Are you sure about John's birth year (1738) though - it makes him rather young when his son John was born in 1753.
