Would like some help please!!
ADELINE PATTERSON (b 1895) married ROBERT PAYNE 1913 in Gt Yarmouth
I have been told her mother's name was CHARLOTTE LAYTON HOLMES.
I can't seem to find her any where? Her husband ? PATTERSON was believed to have Irish roots but I can
find nothing as yet on either of them. As far as I am aware they lived in the Gt Yarmouth area.
Anything would be most appreciated

Hi there,
Are you still interested in more information? I, and a few others all descended from John Patterson's brothers, are in contact and can take the Pattersons back to 1799 in Norfolk. That's when we meet Jonathan Patterson who is currently a bit of a brick wall. We have one or two possibilities but nothing definite.
As for Adeline, I do know of one lady who is directly descended from John and Charlotte who only discovered the existence of Adeline last month when she obtained Charlotte's death cert. I don't know whether she has any info on the Holmes side but will send her an email tomorrow and point her to this thread.

There is this baptism;
Charlotte HOLMES, baptised Norwich St Mary 1859, born 1856 St Giles, parents Robert and Hannah
There are lots of Pattersons and Holmes on;
www.doun.org/transcriptions
I have an interest in the Patterson name as it was used as a middle name for a few siblings of my 3x grandmother Mary Ann Hannah Leggett nee Newby (1820-1909) from Great Yarmouth.

Hi,
Could I jump into this one too ;)
I have not really looked into this one properly yet; but have been given my Mary Ann Hannah Newby ( born 1819-1820/ died 1909) parents as JOHN NEWBY and CHARLOTTE GARWOOD. She married William Leggett.
Their son William Newby Leggett (1841-1826) started our family in NZ, he was a mariner on his marriage cert.
Could her Father possibly be the son John mentioned in the will??
In the !851 Census, Great Yarmouth, there is a Newby family next door to my Leggetts.
John Newby, born 1800, GY and wife Hannah and family
William Leggett started out as MS and barman and later publican of "Tomlinsons Arms" and Mary Ann took over licence after his death 1881.
Any help appreciated to confirm my Marys parents.

where do you find them all, please give us a clue
-
Hiya
Have a look at
http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk
click on Start search NOAH
In search box you can put in surname or town/village etc.
Tick the box on the left which one you want.
eg. Probate, Books and Trade Directories
& away you go.
Probates: any i find of interest i open the thumb nail up & right click
save image as
i put it on desktop so i can read them.
If you stay online to long reading them, you get time out.
You can save these & it does not cost you anything.
Have a look at the dir's also plus the churches. Keep you going for a while
I also access Norfolk Record Office
& scroll down to NORCAT
open that up put in the surname or town/village loads there but remember you have to pay for Norfolk records Will's etc.
I got most of my Wills from them at reasonal cost.
Family chest is another one.

Hello Bodham. My great great great grandfather is a Newby, documented in various places as a master mariner. The family lived in Deal, Kent, throughout most of the 1800's and I'm wondering if the Newby's you have found could be their ancestors in Norfolk? Capt Robert H Newby was (I believe) a master mariner from around 1820 and commanded various vessels of the infamous South Sea Company, including the "Mary" (wrecked off Tasmania circa 1845), the Helen Denny and Pusey Hall amongst others. He was killed at sea as a passenger on a fellow captain's ship (the Wellington) around July of 1875 when the vessel struck an iceberg. I wonder if there is a connection with the 'Norfolk Line' you mention?

Welcome to Rootschat nibbler :)
Hi Noel,
As I got notification of this posting I can now link my Newbys to the info you posted earlier;
"James Newby married Elizabeth Nichols 01/12/1788 Lowestoft Suffolk.
James the son of James Newby who married Anne Patterson 1760 Lowestoft."
Here is my link I am pretty sure;
JOHN Newby, 11 March 1778, Lowestoft, Suffolk
Parents, James NEWBY and Ann (Patterson)
John Married Charlotte GARWOOD, 01 April 1799, Lowestoft, Suffolk
John seems to have died c 1849.
1851 Census Charlotte is with Daughter Elizabeth LOUTTID, nee Newby in Great Yarmouth
(Her Husband Christopher Hornsby Louttid was a Master Mariner)
HO107/1806/215/29
Mary Ann Hannah NEWBY, Christened 15 March 1820, Great Yarmouth , Norfolk to JOHN/CHARLOTTE
(Source Eng/Wales Christening Records)
Marriage;
NEWBY, Mary Ann Hannah, Mutford &c, 13 657
On the same page William LEGGETT
