It's just the way they speak, and the way someone writes it down, or interprets it.
This might be his marriage
Marriages
Mar quarter district Sunderland 1864, vol 10a page 555
John Pescod and one of the potential spouses is Isabella Charlton

For reference:

I find John with Isabella in 1881 and he is a carpenter which fits occupation.
Looking for him earlier

This looks like the 1861 to me, and he isn't with his mother.
1861 census RG9/3778/74/53
Margaret Pescot 54 widow
Robert Pescot 16 son unm blacksmith
Ann Walker 30 dau, mar,
John Walker 3 g'son
Jonathon Walker 7 mths g'son
These ages fit for Robert and Ann.

See http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp for the 1881 census entry for this family. They can be found by searching for Henrietta Pescott 1872. That transcription shows the wife as E M but it is I M on the original and the oldest child is actually J Wilkie. The two younger children were twins Isabella and William Henry (who died in 1881 soon after the census was taken)

Hi,
Am also looking at the pescod/pescot/pescott line (particularly "john holdsby") and noticed this thread. Has the OP got any further with this?

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Gypandme has not been online since March but she should get a notification of your reply and I hope she will respond. If you use the rootschat searchbox at the top of the page to look for Pescod/Pescott you will find a lot of posts about the family which may be helpful.
