Hi all, firstly a happy new year to everyone, I hope 2009 is a successful year for all.
Now on to my problem, I have a grave reference for St.josephs roman catholic cemetery in Moston, and when I went to visit the plot over christmas, it took an age to find, and when I did, the headstone mentioned a totally different family????!!!!
I have questioned this with the cemetery office, only to be told I must have the wrong plot, I think I was in the right place!!
Does anyone live local to the cemetery, visit it on a regular basis or have any knowledge of the burials there???
The details I have are Isabella Johnson, died aged 89, and is buried in plot St.Peter 536.
I live too far away to keep visiting, and would really appreciate any help anyone can offer.
I look forward to any replies.
All the best,
Benn.
-
Hi Benn
I will have a wander around the cemetery tomorrow for you. :)
What is the date of the burial?
Regards
Ken
-
Hi Benn
Had a wander around today in the snow and found 536 St.Peters, but like you say it has another family in it.
Sorry I could not take it up with the office staff as you have let me know her burial date.
Could she have any connection to that family in 536?
Regards
Ken
-
Hi Ken, Thanks for your messages, sorry I have only just picked them up!!!! Her date of death was 12 october 1948, isabella Johnson, lived at Copestick street in Ancoates??
I'm not sure on any connection to the family in that grave, I can't remember the family name now on the headstone, I don't suppose you made a note of it???? Very cheeky of me I know!!!
But Many thanks for the trouble you took of looking for it, especially in this weather!!!
I suppose the only thing to do is to take a look at her siblings marriages, or her daughters marriages etc and try to find a match with the family in 536.
Thanks again Ken, and sorry I didnt get back to you earlier.
All the best,
Benn.
-
Hi Benn
Sorry I did not note the names, but I know the exact location so will go back and get photo of headstone for you.
Really dont know why I did not do that in the first place :P
Will get back to you asap
Regards
Ken
-
Many thanks Ken, Looking back I should have done that whilst I was there, instead of just disregarding the grave as 'the wrong one'.
A major, and possibly very expensive mistake to make in genealogy!!! Lesson learned I think!!! :-)
I hope you're not going out of your way to do this, thanks again.
Benn.

Does anyone know if the proposed database of St Joseph's burials is complete yet? I contacted the cemetery about 4 years ago when trying to locate a relative who was buried in a pauper's/public inscription grave but, without a date of burial, they could not tell me if he is there. They said that when their database was complete I would be able to search by name. If no-one knows the answer I will contact the cemetary and post their reply on this thread.

I have no idea on this, but would be very useful. might be 'phoning them
if you can get a databse of them would you send one to me please

hi
my grandparents and two of their spinster daughters are
buried in moston cemetery
i needed to find out about one of the daughters as her name is listed
as last on the headstone but was the first to die
i had to pay for a search to be done to discover
that one of the daughters is in fact buried in a public grave
-
Hi Chirp
I am not aware of a database, the few times I have been in they get the burial registers out to check.
Suppose once they do have a database, the info will become chargeable :(
Look forward to the reply from them when you phone.

Ken
-
Hi Benn
Sorry matey not done any grave hunting recently :( but have not forgot about the promise I made to have a wander around that section for you.
Regards
Ken
-
It seems that the database is still in preparation and it will be another 12-18 months before it is complete. There will be no CDROM produced but searches will be made via the website.

Hi Benn
Went to St Josephs yesterday, looked at every headstone in the St Peters section "nothing"
Spoke to one of the grave diggers, and explained the problem to him, he rang the office who rechecked the database.
They only have one Isabella Johnson buried there and she is in that Cowley grave ???
Benn I have no idea on what direction for you to take now to resolve the mystery ???
Regards
Ken

Hi Ken, Thankyou very much for all your help, It does seem strange that she is in a grave with another family, perhaps there is a connection - but I can't find one yet!
I think probably the best thing to do is next time I get to Manchester, is to pop in again and get the grave report, and I'll just have to make do I suppose. I've got to come over soon anyway to search Manchester General Cemetery, so I can now make a day of it.
Thanks again for all you've done.
Best regards,
Benn.

Hi All
I am researching my family history and i have a listing for a grave in Moston Cemetary. I have found the grave but it dosen't list my great grandmothers name, but her parents are listed on the grave. I was wondering if any one has been able to look at the archive records before for Moston Cemetary and if they have been charged for the search? My dad thinks it is possible that ther may be other family members buired in the plot, may be the records would show this.
Kind regards
Ali

Picked up on this as i had a similar mystery involving graves and who's who, it's intriguing.
David that died in april 1953 age 22: birth? Dec 1930, Mcr. N. mothers maiden name HEALEY (freeBMD)
David Cowley married Ethel HEALEY Sep 1929, Oldham (the couple in the grave)
there is a marriage of a Harry HEALEY to a mary JOHNSON, 1930 oldham
Could this Mary be a granddaughter of Isabella????
It is in there somewhere??????

Hello Ali
11 years ago when I contacted St Joseph's re a family burial I sent a written request giving the date of death. I received a reply in the post and was not charged for the service. However they did say they were a registered charity so would appreciate a donation. I am sure you could obtain an email address and contact them to find out if this is still the situation.

Hi all.
I have also been trying to locate a grave at Moston Cemetery with the very kind help of MancsMan. When I emailed them, if you give them an exact date of death they will provide the grave number free-of-charge but if you only have the year they charge £30.00 for a search. The email address is cemeteries@salforddiocese.org
Regards. Luzzu.

It's a shame all the cemeteries have now jumped onto the "lets scr*w the family researchers" band wagon.
Well saying that there are a few that are free ;D
Luzzu like I said in my email I will find your Michael

Hello Benny,
All my family are buried in St Joseph's. My cousin bought a grave from a lady so she is buried in the grave along with my Aunt Uncle and two cousins. Her name is on the headstone so it is confusing if you dont know the story. Maybe something like this happened with the person you are looking for.
When I have visited the cemetery the office gets out their book of records and most times has the information if you have the persons name.

I have a grave paper for my great grandmother that gives me information that she is buried in grave 185 in the St Peters section of St Josephs RC cemetery, Moston, Manchester. Is anybody able to tell me the location of this grave I would like to find out if any other family members are buries with her
thanks
-
Further back on this thread Luzzu gave the contact email address you should write to - if you state the cemetary you are interested in, give the deceased persons name and date of death they should be able to advise you. There is a database in preparation for Moston but it will be some time before it is complete.
Good luck

Hi Etch
You will find layout plans at both the main and the back entrance, so if you live local you should have no problem finding it.
I would have a look myself, but I have very little time for rootschat at present.
If you ask them for a list of who is buried in that grave they will charge you for it.

Can any one help with these people please...or make any suggestions for them.
John Joseph CURRAN & Mary Josephine MORAN
John Joseph d 1963 and is buried in Moston Cemetery Manchester LANCS
Mary Josephine MORAN d 2005 and is buried with her husband.
She was b. 10/12/1919
I know they had at least 6 children
Joseph (son of above) is also buried in Moston Cemetery.
John ( son of above)is also deceased, lived in the Preston
area.
I could get lucky and have John Joseph's parents listed on his headstone..... well .. the thought is there, lol

What is it you want to know?
Migky ;)
-
Hi Migky
I was just trying to find the location of the grave to see if other members of the family are also buried there. It was in the St Peters section
-
Hi Etch, my question was for Genie3249
I am not sure what you are asking ? Are you looking for some one to go and check to see if that grave has a headstone ? If you are going your self they will tell you at the reception where the grave is located but Mancsman has posted a cemetery plan on this thread already for every one?
Migky ;)
-
Sorry Migky
All plans, maps, layouts have been removed from rootschat.
MancsMan ;)
-
Under stood Mancsman, but like i said if some one has a grave number, all you have to do is ask at Moston cemetery where the grave is located. It's not hard to do that is it ;D
Mancsman, a few have tried that duck tape on me but can't shut me up ;D
Memo to Migky" must remember to send Mancsman an up date on how things been going "
Migky ;)
-
I must catch the office staff on bad days, because the look you get when you ask them a question would make most people :'( LOL!!!!!
The exception to that are the ground staff, great bunch of lads, have helped me out a few times. ;D
Large maps of the cemetery can be found located at both entrances to the cemetery.
I do also know a Curran family still living in Moston, maybe a connection?
To me old chum Migky "I can hear you from my house" ;D don't need a phone. But I will stick with the duct tape, now I have sold all my research stuff on ebay, except the scchhhhhhh "You know whats" ;) :D ;D LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoping maybe theres is a headstone on their grave which they are listed.

Would be a little hard to check from Oz ;D
But to locate the stone we would need an actual date of death, if anyone was to walk into the office with just a year, they would say sorry, it would take up to much time looking. Or the other trick they would say of course but me have a charge of £XX
The best place the find their parents would be a marriage cert, have you looked for it?
Try emailling them explaining you are in Oz but plan to visit next year, or something like that.

Should have added

Hi Migky
Thanks for the reply.
I dont have a full death date for James Joseph or for Mary Josephine CURRAN nee MORAN.
What would be on Marys death cert.. given its recent..2005
Name: Mary Josephine Curran
Birth Date: 10 Dec 1919
Death Registration Month/Year: May 2005
Age at death (estimated): 85
Registration district: Manchester
Inferred County: Lancashire
Register number: K63B
District and Subdistrict: 006/1K
Married.. seems to be
Name: John Curran
Spouse Surname: Moran
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1941
Registration district: Manchester
Registration county (inferred): Lancashire
Volume Number: 8d
Page Number: 463
I think this is John's death altho family say he was 52
John J CURRAN Died June qtr 1963 aged 68 years Manchester Vol 10e Page 228
Guess it wouldnt be the first or last family story to be wrong ;D
Only recently started working on this so I have limited information.
Why is it all the ones you think will be easy have 14 kids for you to chase. ;D

hello
It was quite common for friends or relatives to let some one have a space in their plot as they used to put about 6 people in one plot. So she may be in the grave of a totally unrelated person , but a friend .
If you still need support I am going to Moston in about four weeks and may as well look for a few plots to make my trip worthwhile .Send me some details . I WIll reply if i find anything .
-
Was at St Josephs again today, on another soul destroying wasted trip, and the very helpful lady behind the desk told me that they are aiming to have the database up and running in December. Ironing out a few problems first-probably trying to work out who is exactly in which plot and where exactly each plot is. She hinted that it would be on a pay as you go basis. Possibly buy so many credits at a time.
We'll see.
Eric

Wayhay! great news but typical Roman Catholic thing. Always looking for money ::)
Got me really wondering on what info they are going to give out?
If like Bury they keep hiding behind the old " Data protection act" and i keep quoting them " The freedom of information act" ;D
Great info and thanks for the heads-up

Is your John Foy a Hulme lad son of Martin from Galway??
If so I think we researching same ancestors.....
-
It is, and if you are Lee you have contacted me via Ancestry ;)

Ahhhhhh !!
Is the John Foy at Moston Winifred's brother???
Just found out Winifred was buried there in paupers grave 25/12/1904.
-
No, Winifred's brother John is my other halfs great grandfather. The John buried at Moston is HIS son, so Winifred's nephew. There are two entries in the National Roll that are conflicting so its a bit confusing. Can tell you more if you are interested.
Apparently at Moston a lot of paupers graves or common graves have headstones which was news to me at the time Mancsman very kindy took a photo for me. Copy is yours if you want it.

Do I need to go again? ;D

Dunno, but I was grateful for the photos you took for me :-*

Im hoping an aunt of mine is interred at St Joseph's
Only recently discovered she died in Manchester
My grandparents and 2 other aunts are buried here but I paid for the search on their
grave so know this aunt isn't with them.

Will I have to pay for another search to find her grave?

I stopped going to the office years ago when they sussed me out as a family historian doing work for others and they were losing out on cash for the information.
If you have the exact date just ask them via email for a grave location they may give it you, but if you don't have a exact date it is pay up time again.
The website they have promised for years has still to show it's face >:(

Would be interested re the National Roll entry and photos....I know Winifred was in paupers grave buried on Christmas Day 1904...interestingly a kind soul found a newspaper entry re her Inquest which was fascinating yet sad as she died after a night out drinking just before Christmas!!!

Three years later ...
On 24 Feb 1912 I received this after an email:
"We require an exact date of death in order to locate burials
We can carry out searches with a fee of £30 for 1st year and £15 for each year after.
The online records will be available in the next 12 months but a cd will not be available. The search system will work on the lines of the local authorities, i.e 3 searches for £12 etc."
So when ???
I have to say, they did give me a grave location for free when I supplied them with a date of death.
Loes
Not easy to find dates of death when a name is John, Mary, James etc Bennett or Nolan ...
