:D Please could someone look up my ancestor on the 1841 census his name was James Roden and the only information I have from him is that in 1874 on his sons marriage certificate he was an ostler and living in Alphington Street Plymouth I know it is a long shot but any help much appreciated.
MODERATOR COMMENT: Information provided in what has bacome reply 3 as I have now merged two threads
I have hit a blank wall with some of my ancestors and need some help .
The blanks are my Gr, Gr grandparents Jessie Pearse born 1855 in Stoke Dameral to parents Robert and Ann Pearse and Archibald Roden birth unknown but he was a soldier in 1875 on there marriage certificate and his father was James Roden living in Alphington Street occupation Ostler.
Jessie had a baby in 1874 called Archibald while she lived in Rackfield Exeter before she married. His birth certificate says father unknown but she married Archibald I assume his real father 8 months after the birth which is a mystery in itself.
The baby is on all census from 1881 - 1901 as living with his grandparents Robert and Ann where his names appear sometimes as Pearse and sometimes Roden.
The baby grew up to have his own children living in Cecil street he had a son called Archibald Roden so I am pretty sure his real father was Archibald Roden who Jessie married.
I have done allot of of looking for Jessie and Archibald for the last few years and I cannot find anything so any info or advice would be very helpful.

Yes I looked into that but I did'nt think that was my ancestors James was an Ostler and Archibald his son was a soldier in 1875 they lived in .Archibald Roden James's son married Jessie Pearse 22 Feb 1875 this is the info on the marriage certificate.
Archibald Roden 26 / bachelor/ soldier /Alphington street / James Roden /ostler.
Jessie Pearse 19 /spinster / Alphington street /Robert Pearse / stone mason.
In the parish of St Thomas
Witnesses were W Blair and Polly Pearse
This is everything .Thanks

I do have that census info but I have just clicked that on reading it I think that Jessie and Archibald were living in Alphington Street together as it says on there marriage certificate .

Hi
Well it helps to have all the information together, we didn't know Archibald and Jessie's ages before, glad I found the right Jessie
Now to look for Archibald and hopefully this time we can find the right one, although if he was a soldier he may have been away at census time.
Barbara :)

Hi a.thompson,
Not having much luck with this. I do tend to agree that Archibald was probably the son of Archibald and Jesse. Because they were not married at the time it was not possible to list him on the Birth Cert. It does appear the parents were probably living as man and wife at the time of the marriage. Now the marriage entry just lists Archibald's father as James. We have no idea where he was living at the time. Archibald being a soldier in 1876 does not mean he was a soldier or even in Devon in 1871. He may have only been there for a short time. I see no reason to believe either Archibald or his father James were in Devon in 1871. A soldier on the base would not likely be there with his parents. Hopefully someone will turn up something after the marriage. So far I have been unable to locate them.
MODERATOR COMMENT: Sorry, I have tried to split and merge the information which was not connected to your 1841 census lookup thread, but was unable to do so without having Barbara as the original poster so have now merged it all.
As I said above by what we can see I have no reason to believe James or Archibald were from Devon. I hope Archibald can be found after the marriage
Cheers Kris :)

thanks . I do know that there son Archibald married Mabel Berry daughter of James and Elizabeth Berry in1904 while living at 57 Cecil Street I think with Mabel's parents .
In 1913 Archibald and Mabel with their children moved up here to Birkenhead where he took a job at cammelairds ship builders. He eventually died living here in 1921 and she lived until 1945.

It might be worth getting the 1919 death cert to see if any further information is given, you can check with the local registrar first, or the GRO, to see if his widow Jessie's name is given to make sure it's the right cert before you buy it.
