I'm sorry I posted this previously on the wrong board.
>:(
I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me please?
I'm trying to find out more about my great grandmoth MARY ANN COLE she married a JOSEPH FIELD on 15 July 1843 at Newington, her father is shown as BENJAMIN COLE a Fireman.
According to census returns she was born in 1821 in Bermondsey although one return shows Rotherhithe.
Is there anyone with access to the baptisms for these areas please?

Hi Bostel,
There would be more than one church in these places so not an easy task :( Have you found her or her family in 1841? I had a quick look but too many possibilities & it's more than likely she's not with them, probably out earning a living,

Hi Jane
No I have not been able to find her in 1841, I have in fact been looking this afternoon and had no luck.
I tried for her father and also for a Susanna Cole who appears as a witness on her marriage, but again no luck.
-
The only thing I found was a marriage on the IGI of a Benjamin Cole to a Jane Base 2/12/1811, St. George the Martyr, Southwark..could be something could be nothing.
Susannah Cole might be a sister/mother or cousin :-\

Thanks for all the suggestions, at the moment I do not think that we have found the right family.
The 1881 census is the only one that records her as having been born in Rotherhithe, the 1851,61,71 & 91 all say Bermondsey, they all give a birth date of 1820/21. She died 25 December 1896 and is shown as being 77 years old, which could therefore mean that she was born in 1819, the death was registered by her daughter. On the maariage certificate, her address seems to say 12 Bank Side, (two seperate words) but the first word is a little unclear. As well as a Susanna Cole the second witness to the wedding was a George Williams.
Once again many thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi Carol
I looked up '12 Bankside' on the 1851 Census. Maybe even after 8 years there might be some clues.
Details 'Bankside' Southwark Bridge. St Saviour's Southwark. 1558 / 302 a /
No 12 appears to be a Pub with several family's living there. I cant see any obvious connection but pass it on just in case.

I noted the baptism for ' Sarah Batch Cole' her father Benjamin was a Victualler.. Wonder if he was at the Bankside address in 1843??

Good luck, :)

Hi, I am new to this site and just seen your entry about a Cole possibly in Rotherhithe at some time. My G-G-Grandfather James Charles William Cole was listed as born at Mill Pond Bridge, Surrey on my G-Grandfathers birth Cert, but on G-G-Grandfathers (JCWC) marriage Cert he is listed as born Rotherhithe near Deptford, Surrey. So I am always on the look out for Cole family with any association with the same area. I notice a couple of ladies have tried to help you in your quest. My G-G-Grandfather seems to have been born in 1842 based on age at his sons birth and age at marriage but he may have been actually born or just christened 3 yrs later as i found his christening on 2/5/1845 at St Mary Magdeline, Bermondsey, Surrey, England. His parents were William Haydon Cole & Rebecca Tupper which were found from his marriage Cert to Ann Hoath. Because my G-G-Grandfather (JCWC) married here in Australia to an older lady who also came to Australia from UK & married in 1869, I have not been able to track him back any further. In the event that someone sees this posting and finds anything in 1841 census that might shed some light on the families I would greatly appreciate it. My G-G-Grandfather had a sister Rebecca Susan Cole born Dec Q 1839 in Bermondsey, chr 7/7/1841 St Mary Magdeline, Bermondsey, so she would be with parents in 1841. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi Wendy,
Welcome to rootschat.
I can only find the following in the 1841 census
Gelding Street, St Mary Magdelin, Bermondsey.
Anne Cole 40
Rachael " 15
John " 25
Rebecca " 25
William " 20
Rebecca " 1
All born county
All ages approximate as they were often rounded up or down to th nearest 5 years in 1841.
Rebecca and William could be James' parents?
1851
Same family
19, Rose Court, St Mary Magdelin, Bermondsey
William Cole head mar 32 Labourer
Rebecca " wife mar 33
Rebecca " dau 11
Charles " son 9
Ann " dau 6
William " son 3
Thomas " son 1
John Morgan lodger unm 31
All born Surrey, Bermondsey.
Could James Charles William be using his second name? My g grandfather was born as George Stephen but was forever known as Stephen. Only certificates would confirm if this was the right family.
I have the following on cd
1813-1825 births, marriages and burials, St Mary Magdalen, Rotherhithe.
No baptisms for a William Haywood Cole
No marriages
Burials
Mary Cole 1821 Feb 25 from Mill Pond Bridge aged 69 years
Henry Cole 1823 Feb 26 from George Row age uk
Maria Cole 1814 May 29 from Paradise Street infant
William 1813 April 11 from Cross Alley aged 72 years
Hope some of this might be of help.
If you have any new queries about your family then it would be good to start a fresh thread for a wider audience, but please let me know if i can help anymore. Best wishes
Cathy :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, at the moment I do not think that we have found the correct family as yet.
I'll just have to keep searching.

Thank you Cath - yes you look like you have found the right family and I will now go see if I can find the other people listed in census. You may have given me William Cole's siblings & mother from 1841 entry and more of Rebecca & James Charles siblings. You are correct that I have found James Charles William Cole sometimes just as Charles William Cole which was very confusing to start with, so I am happy that you have found a match for this family in census records. I hadn't been able to get anywhere with this family till 2 weeks ago, so your help now is wonderful giving me more to hunt for now. Mary Cole burial 1821 in Mill Pond Bridge is very interesting. I haven't found anything with that location entered anywhere before, so now I know it existed and there was family born & buried there.
A huge thanks to you for all this and I will take up your suggestion of creating a new thread once I get a handle as they say on the info you have given me.
Kind regards
