I am researching the Powell family and cannot find the correct spelling for any of the places they were born.
I have found a Richard Powell in the 1881 census birthplace CHANINGTON. I cannot find any such place with a variation of spelling.
I next looked for his wife b. KINSLEY, Shropshire, nothing there either.
Last week a kind gentleman sent me a copy of  the same family but with more children from the 1871 census of strays. Perfect, but the same problem. Now some are born Chenninton, no luck. Then even more are b. Hedgemon(Edgmond)? Always the question mark so obbiously the people doing the census did not know either.
I would appreciate any help I can get with this.
 Thank you, Lizzie

I tried www.old-maps.co.uk and found nothing immediately obvious.
Maybe a place called Kynnersley, Shropshire. I put Kynnersley into www.multimap.com and it gives a Cherrington just to the North, and an Edgmond to the North-East.

Can you locate them in 1891 to get a second opinion on their birthplace(s)?

Is there maybe a chance it could be Kinnerley? This is a village about 6 miles from Oswestry, and my mother's family have been in the immediate area since the 1400s.

No, in Yorkshire but I have family lines from the Shropshire/Staffordshire border.

Visited on many occasions as it is only a couple of hours drive.

The above was taken from Bulmers 1851 Directory & Gazetteer of Shropshire.
