hi someone very kindly looked up this information for me
1841
HO107/332/8/1/17/28 – Watermill Lane
Henry Byford, 36, Ag Lab, b Essex
Myria(?) Byford, 29, not b Essex
Mary Ann Byford, 9, not b Essex
Emma Byford, 6, b Essex
Joseph Byford, 4, b Essex
Thomas Byford, 1, b Essex
is there any way of finding out pre 1841 - as to who henry's parents / siblings were
im still new & its all a bit confusing??
were there census then or would it be parish records?
any help would be excellent

Hi,
You will need to go to the parish records.
If you have Henry's place of birth then you can start to search the parish records of that area. If you don't have his place of birth, finding him on the 1851 census would give you that information.

Hi Pootle
It might be a good idea to try and see if baby Thomas' birth or even that of a later known child was registered. That birth certificate will give you his parents' full names.
You can look for the baptisms of the known children in the relevant parish registers.
Assuming that Mary Ann was the oldest child, it might be a good idea to look for her parents marriage in the parish where she was born/baptised. The first child was often baptised in the church where the parents married.
Have fun!

Try the Essex record office:
http://194.129.26.30/applications/parishrecords/
If you have difficulty getting there, you may be able to order films from the LDS (small fee involved) - see their library catalogue http://www.familysearch.org to view at your local family history centre - see locations on the same site.
Best wishes
