Wondering if there are any McKechnies out there from my family.
My father, Norman was born in Adelaide in 1925. His father, also Norman was born in Hawker, in 1900. I have their birth certificates. My query is about my great grandfather, Malcolm. I know that he was a stationmaster with SA Railways, and I have a photo of his grave, he died, aged 91ish in 1956. I do not know where he was born. His father was John, according to his marriage record (which I was able to see at the State library of NSW via a book published by SA family history group).
So, does this family ring any bells for anyone? Malcolm married Persilla (Priscilla) Dellow and their children were: John Adolph (known as Jack), Donald Victor, Allan, Norman, Christina Margaret.
I'd love to be in touch with anyone from the family, as my Dad would never speak of his family, in fact he became really agro when my Mum spoke about hers!! My Grandad, Norman died when I was 11, so I didn't get a chance to ask any questions.
Thanks
Jude

Hello there Jude
I just had a look at the index and there are nother marriages in SA with the father being John McKechnie. I would hazzard a guess with the names of the children that he was from Scotland.
there was another son who died young
MCKECHNIE Malcolm Roderic died 14/2/1896 aged 4 months 235/212
Relative Malcolm MCKECHNIE (F)
Relative 2 Priscilla MCKECHNIE (M)

This could be the family in Scotland in the 1871 Census.
Might pay to look at Shipping records to see if he may have came from their.
Born Cambelltown Argyll Scotland
Address on census is Killeonan
John McKechnie 45
Jean McKechnie 46
Neil McKechnie 14
Bella McKechnie 11
John McKechnie 9
Malcom McKechnie 2
-
Unfortunately there are not oo many shipping records on line for SA.
here is the marriage details
Malcolm McKechnie aged 29 single father John McKechnie married
Priscilla Dellow aged 24 single father Luke Dellow
14/3/1892 at BC Church Balaklava
Book/Page: 170/1026
So gives him a birth year of 1863c

Hi,
Not 100% relevant, but for your interest, here are some further McKechnie burialsat Mt Barker. Some are your names, others "probably" are.

McKECHNIE, Allan
McKECHNIE, Arthur Luke
McKECHNIE, Christina

No Malcolm MCKECHNIE birth on Vic Pioneer Index. I should have posted that I had already checked. I have also checked the shipping at PROV as many South Aussies landed in Vic before travelling to SA.
There is this on IGI....familysearch.org
MALCOLM MCKECHNIE
Birth 01 SEP 1862 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
Parents Father JOHN MCKECHNIE
Mother CHRISTINA CAMPBELL MACINTYRE

There is a record for a Malcolm and Robert in 1876...but 14 years if age seems a bit young and if I recall there were quite strict 'rules' for assisted passengers. However that is all I can find in the shipping records for Malcolm MCKECHNIE.
Unable to check on the Biographical Index of SA [BISA] as my CD is showing no information is on the disc >:( >:( >:( :'( There may be a snippet about Malcolm on there.

If you would like to read the following link...it is info on how to gain records of employees of South Australian Railways.
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-SAGEN/2002-05/1021357246
It would seem by the places of birth of Malcolm's children that he was at Balaclava and Hawker during that period.

You may already have searched the National Archives site and found that John Adolph was killed in action in ww1
There is a good deal of infomation about him in his file including letters form a Mrs G Dellow
You will also see the enlistment of Donald Victor and a ww2 enlistment for Christina Margaret.

Thank you all so much for your help!!
I did know about the loss of my grandfather's oldest brother, he is referred to as Jack on his parents' headstone. Donald Victor had a terrible time in France, his record suggests that he had very bad shell shock. His son, Glen was 18 and an able seaman on HMAS Sydney, and was lost in1941. That poor man!!
It would seem likely that Christina Campbell MacIntyre was Malcolm's mother, I'll send for a transcription of his death cert to check, thanks for the link,Cando. Priscilla's mother was Margaret Ford, so they named their only daughter Christina Margaret.
I have been in touch with Centennial Park cemetery, about the licence on the grave. The licence is in Malcolm's name, as Priscilla predeceased him. The law says that the licence can then pass to the next oldest relative in the direct line. So, Jack died in WW1, the other brothers and their sister are no longer here. My grandfather was the youngest, and I don't know if there is anyone else "higher up" in the family line to pay the fee and take over the licence. I have a form to fill in to do this, but thought I'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone, and see if there was anyone here at Rootschat who may be related, PLUS someone might be able to assist with my query about Malcolm's family. Mission accomplished, I think. I have some very good lines to follow, and I think I'm going to fill in the form for the cemetery, and take over the licence myself. I can't bear the thought of them reusing the sight. They are MY great grandparents!
Thanks again Jenn, Floozy, Cando and Sue. Much appreciated.

Jude ;D I am so pleased you are renewing the lease/licence on your grandparents' graves. Probably the grave would have been reused....but the headstones and surrounds are sometimes crushed for landscaping materials.
Jude the South Australian Death Certs give very little information...no parents' names unfortunately.

Hi Cando, What a shame!! I'm used to the NSW certs, which are wonderful. I'm still going to check it out, 'though, because it will at least tell me how long he's been in Aus. That may turn out to be useful.
I've been messing around with Christina Campbell MacIntyre and John McKechnie on the IGI (taking it all with the preverbial grain of salt), and have found a marriage for them. Actually there are 2 marriages for them, both are extracted records, 1 month apart in the same area. I'm not doing anything silly like adding them to my tree, just a bit of fun and wishful thinking. It tells me that the McKechnies seem to have come from the Argyll area of Scotland, something I had heard, but not confirmed until now.
Thanks once again for your trouble, and a happy New Year.
Jude

You could check the marriage and birth with Scotsland people but I wouldn't dismiss the extracted records on IGI...submitted yes! Perhaps keep them in your notes on your family tree....you never know ;)
Thank goodness all my rellies bar one, were in Victoria...actually more info in the early years than other states. Made research much easier.
When my replacement CD for the Biographical Index of South Australians arrives I will see if there is any McKECHNIE info there.
Happy New Year Jude ;D
Cheers

Hi, this is a reply for Jude,
I am also decended from Malcolm and Pricilla, their son Harry was the father of my grandmother Thelma Joyce McKechnie. Have you managed to find the information you were looking for?
Regards,
Kat Howlett

Hello Kat,
What a lovely surprise!! I'm afraid that I haven't progressed at all with my McKechnie ancestors. It is lovely to hear from a relative. I'd love to hear about the family, if you could help me. As I originally said, my Dad wasn't a well man, and he, for some reason, refused to talk about his family at all, even becoming angry and aggressive if my Mum spoke about her family (and she did, often!!).
So, my grandfather Norman, was Malcolm's youngest son; it appears that I omitted Harry in my first post, sorry about that! Please feel free to PM me , and I'll be happy to let you know about our small branch of the family.
Thank you very much.

Hello Kat,
Welcome to rootschat. :D
Excuse me for butting in Jude but Kat will have to make 2 more posts before she can use the pm system. They can be trivial eg "hi".
However I do believe (well it worked for me :) but I can't see it in the regulations) that you can send Kat a PM with your e-mail address. Kat will not be able to reply by PM (but she can by e-mail).
cheers,
Ros

Thanks for that info, Ros, much appreciated!
Jude, my father has done a little research on Mr Dellow too, so I will post that here as post #1 toward my goal of personal messages :-) I have copied the below from an email my father sent me, he mentions a copy of a headstone that someone can send him, so if we manage to receive it, I can send a copy on to you.
McKECHNIE—DELLOW.—On the 14th March, at the Bible Christian Church, Balaklava,
by the Rev. John Pearce, Malcolm, eldest son of Mr. John McKechnie, of Victoria
to Priscilla, sixth daughter of Mr. Luke Dellow, of Balaklava.
Luke Dellow (19) married Margaret Ford (18) in Adelaide on 23 November 1853.
According to their golden wedding announcement in the Advertiser in 1903
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/5021413
DELLOW-FORD.-On the 28th November, 1853, at Trinity Church, Adelaide, by the
Rev. Dean Farrell, Luke, second son of William Dellow, Hertfordshire, England,
to Margaret Ford, Ireland. Present address. Findon. S.A.
Good luck finding the origins of "Margaret Ford, Ireland". She arrived in
South Australia in 1949 on the Elgin from Liverpool via Plymouth, unaccompanied
by any family members. It would that seem she never told anybody anything except
"Ireland".
Luke Dellow was baptized in Great Hormead, Hertfordshire, on 16 September 1834.
His parents were William Dellow and Elizabeth Fitzjohn, who were married in
Layston, Hertfordshire, on 30 January 1826. See
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NL3M-QMX
Their youngest son, Thomas Edward,
was born in Brompton on 26 April 1850. Go to
http://www.familyhistorysa.info/births-marriages-deaths/births.html
and search for a birth with the surname "Della".
William and Elizabeth Dellow, your greatgreatgreatgreatgrandparents, are
buried in the Hindmarsh Cemetery. See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deadsearch/hindmarsh_ag.htm
There is a nice person who has photographed the headstones and will send
us one for free if we ask."

Also, mother Jennifer (whose mother was Thelma, whose father was Harry, whose father was Malcolm) says that Arthur & Gwen has surviving decendants who are dairy farmers around the Mt Compass area. They may be the people you need to chat to about Malcolm's grave site, unless you have already solved it (also, thanks for the reminder.. Harry's grave site is up for renewal in 2015 and mum and I don't want to forget!! :-)
And that is message #2, PM on the way!
-
OOPS!! Thanks Ros, I really should have said that I would PM her, but was at work, and in a hurry. Happy for you to "butt in"" with info at any time.
Thanks again.
Also, thanks Kat for the info. I'll be in touch with you, certainly.
