Does anyone have access to (or can tell me where to find) parish registers for Leytonstone for 1903? I am looking for the baptism of a Katie (possibly down as Kate or Catherine) Donovan who was born there in 1903 to John Donovan and his wife Jane.

Any help appreciated.

Genuki gives Leyton as West Ham registration dist 1837 - 1935

Hi

Do you have any idea of a parish in Leytonstone?  The names of a church would help when searching through baptismal records.  In 1903 Leytonstone was considered part of Essex.  Therefore, some microfiche records are held at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford.  If they are not there then they will be held at the local records office in Walthamstow, E17.  If you find her parents on the 1901 Census it will give a parish as well as a location in Leytonstone and most often children were baptised in the church nearest to their home.  If you don't have a parish then it would just mean searching all the churches where the ERO hold records.  In 1903 they would have been written fairly clearly and will be legible to read.

Hiya

In 1901 John and Jane were living in Bethnal Green, London with their two sons Dennis (b1898) and Charles (b1900). According to the 1911 census Kate was born in Leytonstone in 1903, and the next child Nellie was born in St Luke's parish, London. So sometime between 1903-1907 they moved from Essex back to London. The next child, Jane, was born back in Bethnal Green. Why they moved from London to Essex and back to London I don't yet know (John was a bootmaker). However thanks for explaining where I may find the records relating to Katie's birth.

Do you know if this family were Catholics (DONOVAN sounds Irish)?

Catholic churches tend to keep hold of their records and not deposit them in county records offices.  :-\

One of the main churches in Leytonstone is St. Johns Church.  You could give that a try.
