Hi Fozzie
Cannot trace James Robert Wenham in Pleasant Row.
We have a George, age 39 Tailor;Eliza(Wife) George (son) and James (son) age 14 also a tailor at 7 Pleasant Row.
Let me know if you want more details of this family. If the son is the one you are looking for he is only listed as James.

Hi Fozzie
Wenham must be a well known Hastings family there were Wenhams living in Ore village when I was living there back in the 50s and 60s and I am sure I've noticed them whilst looking for mine.
Anyway to the business in hand:
All Saints- Hastings -East Ward- Ecclesiatical parish Chichester
No. on schedule 49 7 Pleasant Row
George Wenham Head M Age 39 Tailor Born Sx. Hastings.
Eliza Wenham Wife M Age 45 Born Sx. Hastings
George Wenham Son U Age 16* Cabinet maker (Apprentice) Born Sx.Hastings
James Wenham Son U Age 14 Tailor Born Sx.Hastings
Ref:RG9/562 78 p9.
*there is a line through 16 it could be 15 but I am pretty sure it is 16.
They are also there in 1851 only at 6 Pleasant Row.Expect you've got this info. though.

Hi Gill,
Many thanks for the info.
The Wenham family is huge and my closest Wenham relations were born and lived in Ore around the same time as you.
It's interesting to see that the same family were living next door on the 1851 census, I was starting to wonder why some certs. were 7 and others 6 Pleasant Row. I haven't got the details from the 1851 census so would very much appreciate it if it's not too much trouble.
Also if poss would you be able to see if there are anymore Wenhams living in Pleasant Row and also a Dine family. Sorry to ask so much.
I have several death cert for the Wenham family and all had a Maria Dine present at the death/informant and am trying to find a possible connection to them.
Thank you again and am very grateful for your help.
Best Wishes

Hi Fozzie
Right 1851 Census is exactly same as 1861 but obviously 10 years off ages and address is as stated 6 Pleasant Row. The children have no occupations.
However there is one more Wenham listed and that is: Mary Wenham daughter unmarried age 13 born Sussex Hastings. She must have married (or died) let's hope its the former by1861
there are no more Wenhams in 1851 living in Pleasant Row. there are other Wenhams listed.
There isn't a Maria Dine listed in the same parish but there is one in the volume covering St.Clements and St.Mary's in the Castle for 1851:
Maria DINE Wife Married Age 44 No occupation born COR Causand (I assume it's Cornwall although the abbreviation for Cornwall should be CON) living at 16 John Street (which is in St.Clements parish) so she's in the Old Town area.
Her husband William is a hairdresser. Perhaps she was just a friend of the family or she may have been a 'nurse' and looked after sick people unofficially. They did some strange things in Victorian times and as women didn't really have occupations she could have been working in this capacity!
I have a couple of old Hastings directories which list her husband as the local hairdreser. So perhaps he would cut someone's hair and they would say father's ill and he would recommend his wife to look after them, but if her name appears on death certificates she didn't do a particularly good job!!
I love a good mystery.
Let me know if you solve this one.
Regards
Gill

Hi Gill
Thank you so much for the info, your time and trouble, very grateful.
I've had a look on the 1871 census and found a Maria Dine (Nurse) at 20 St Andrews Square birth place Cornwall but her age is 45 .
Also found a Dine family living at 6 Pleasant Row (James Wenham home on death cert.) on the same census.
Now I've found other Wenham's living at no 7. There are so many of them I am beginning to loose track of who belongs to who/ how they are all related. The head spins. Why did there have to be so many of them and all seem have the same name , very inconsiderate of the ancestors ;D
Thanks again for all your help
Best wishes
Fozzie
