Title: Tribal pages.. read before paying
Post by: scotjimland on Sunday 28 December 08 16:46 GMT (UK)
I recently signed up to Tribal Pages and was so impressed I paid for the premium site.
All went well until I tried to alter the board header.. something went wrong and I couldn't rectify my error,  nor can I edit.. and my site is now un usable.

I contacted Tribal pages by email, posted on the technical help forum, sent feedback and to date have had no replies.

If you go to the technical forum you will find many unhappy users with similar problems, TP have made no response to any of the posts.. and there is no phone number for help.

I have paid for a premium site but the support is non existent, so think carefully before parting with hard earned.   TP don't seem to care  >:(

I'm sorry you've had problems.

I've had a site with Tribal since June 2006 and have never had any unresolved issues, despite having amended the format on a number of occasions.

On the one occasion I contacted Tribal for advice, I got a satisfactory response within 48 hours.  (support[at]tribalpages.com)

I've recommended Tribal to many folk on RC and elsewhere and never had any negative feedback.

Dave   :)

PS As always, anyone is welcome to have a look at my Tribal site - details at bottom of my signature.

I,ve had my family tree on tribalpages since May 2006 which has been very satisfactory.  I did have one hipcup and that when I tried to contact them, when no response came I put the message on their message board and soon had a response then.

Hi

If you look at TP's  technical help forum you will see many unhappy people, .. many who cannot edit their boards, I have posted several times, emailed twice and sent a comment on the feedback page .. but still no response .. three days have passed and I still have un usable board ..

I'm sorry to hear of your trouble Jim.  I have a free site and have had no reason to contact TP so far.  This may well put me off upgrading  :-\  Have the problems been just over the Holiday season or longer, it maybe that nobody is around to answer?  :-\

I've had no actual issues with the free site features, but one day mine just disappeared - I noticed that the page URLs had a new format - ie with ones chosen name as the hi-level part of the name - tried that, no joy, tried emailing, no joy, tried posting on the forum no joy.

A lot longer than 3 days - I upload a replacement site on 03/12/2008 - and that was well over a month since the problem started !

Its a bloody shame really as my site comes up in search results, but cant be accessed.

So why they are selective about communicating I wish I knew !

and why has this thread been moved to the Lighter Side ?

Hi Kerry.. thanks for your comments, not sure about how long, and it may be just a holiday thing but that is no excuse, there should be at least an automated replay giving information, we pay premium money we should get premium support...

Most sites have a support system that issues a support ticket when you have a problem,.. I don't mind waiting but I strongly object to being ignored ..

Jim

Mods.. Why has this thread been moved ? I thought I posted in the most appropriate forum ?

So did I Jim, but apparently 'whinging and complaining about other sites and / or fee paying services' doesnt belong in the Common Room.

As a newbie to genealogy, RC was my first port of call when I was looking for advice on choosing a hosting site. TP seemed popular and when I hosted my tree I was very pleased.. but just like insurance you only find out how good it really is when you need help..  the first place I thought of to air my problem ( apart from TP) was RC,  .. I was only alerting others to the poor support from TP.

seems like a reasonable expectation to be able to raise an issue of common interest in a Room seemingly aptly named 'The Common Room' ........

An email from another malcontent on Tribal Pages

Quote
Thanks for your answer..WHAT can we do about this lack of response?!

I am answering this from my webtv...so at least got your message...but would not be able to read it on the Forum page as I can see no messages posted since Dec 14!

I am really frustrated...and have forwarded the Forum pages to TP so they

can see what I and some others are seeing.

I got ONE email from TP support-3 weeks go..saying that there was no problem?!

You'd better email me directly at either *******@webtv.net or ******@aol.com-in case messages from the message boards won't go thru as I never know what is going on! If I don't get something-I don't it's been sent(?)

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS CRUMMY TREATMENT?!

At least we deserve the common courtesy of a response!

Any suggestions?

I have also used Tribal Pages for my Family Tree for about three years now, upgrading to a Premium Site when the option for showing "living relatives" was taken away from the Free Sites.I have never been one to frequent their Message Boards and I only have messages from their support when someone wishes to view my Webpage.I'll always speak as I find and I have had no problems.

I recommended the premium site to a friend and he signed up, he suddenly got an email saying he had not paid ,but he had and it emerged he had 4 trees on there instead of one, they apologised and he also got a refund .
I have heard lately of things going wrong on there, I had people disappear from mine so have others.

I have never been one to frequent their Message Boards

and I hope you never need to,

I don't 'frequent' notice boards either, but when things go wrong it's the only place to voice your problem..

Have a read on the TP technical forum and you'll see what I mean..

It is good to hear some news about the Tribal Pages site.

Some months back, they did change some passwords to administer
our sites.  Thus on one site my co-admin person is now unable to access
the admin part of the site.

I am pleased to report that my TP site has finally been fixed by TP support.
In fairness, it was over a holiday period and they were probably under staffed, however, I still feel that communication between TP and it's subscribers  leaves a lot to be desired..

Ramdaskm, I would just like to say I have had two very good matches to my husbands family on Tribal Pages, these have really helped get that side of the family history going, so thanks very much.

the gripe was the lack of support over the xmas period from TT admin.

not about poor help from members.

It's refreshing to see a response from Ramdaskm..

I think TP should get a big tick for coming on here and asking people with issues to contact them.  It seems they do follow up people's concerns fairly thoroughly, which is reassuring.

I agree MarieC, If ramdaskm is a real person.  :-\
Apologies ramdaskm if you're real. LOL

To me, the main point is, Jim had problems, got them sorted, and came back to the thread acknowledging it.

I've thought from the beginning, TP is a good site.

Good on you Jim for coming back on your original point.  I hope your site works for you.

Maybe ramdaskm will sort your problem Newf.
I hope so.

Considering the volume of info and number of members TP has, the number of complaints is very low.
They handle the site very well.

I think you and Jim have just been unfortunate.  Jim's problem has been resolved.

Ooooh!  Nice dig Newf  ;D
I agree though.
I thought it was great that ramdaskm came back so quickly originally.
However, latest response is bland to say the least!  Almost like a telephone centre answer!

Press 1 to complain.
Press 2 to let us know if you've not had a response to 1
Press 3 if you are fed up
Press 4 if you wish to hear these options again
Press 5 to be put on hold for an hour or so
Press 6 to go back to 1

I also noticed that, despite 2 posts on this thread, ramdaskm seems to have "0" posts against name? How does that work???

Dave

I must add, I still think TribalPages is a great site and will continue to recommend it.

This is a Lighter Side thread, therefore postings do not count towards number.  ::)

I agree Tribal pages is a good site and it is a shame that as usual and so often customer care is letting it down.  :(

Hi kerryb,

Not meaning in any remotest way to be difficult but please where does it warn everyone that Lighter Side postings don't count towards number of posts?

I'm sure that you are absolutely and utterly correct but I stupidly had in my mind only that ToT posts didn't count ...  I was wrong yet again, eh

Not remotely important but just for completeness/accuracy ...

Hi JAP

A Rootschat search reveals many examples but here's one from "the horse's mouth" - sorry Trystan!

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,14798.msg52303.html#msg52303

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. this is totally off-topic!  :o ;D

p.p.s. please would everyone be aware that while you are welcome to discuss other sites contructively on Rootschat, it isn't the place for disputes with the providers.  (Although they are welcome to rebut accusations in the interests of fair play!)

Thanks all!  :D

Excited is not the word I would use.
I'll keep it down to my usual 'banter' AR.

However, your response does not clarify when or where RC members should stop discussing things.

A recent thread suggested that it was inappropriate to discuss other sites as "they were nothing to do with RC" (I paraphrase).

I've yet to see a thread being locked / removed if it has positive comments about other sites.

Where do we draw the line?

Remember now AR, this is just banter.

The previous remarks about "off topic" do not refer to the discussion about TribalPages :)

They refer to the discussion about posts on the Lighter Side counting in the totals.

Although "off-topic" as far as the discussion about Tribal Pages is concerned,
we wanted to supply this information for clarification.

I think Arranroots has explained it clearly here (my emphasis on constructively):

PS: I'm very pleased to know from Trystan's post quoted by AR (Oct 2004 - a couple of months before I joined - now, thanks, updated by B-B) that this post won't add to my total number of posts.
