Title: Witton Park - location of records please?
Post by: brovagen on Friday 26 December 08 19:30 GMT (UK)
Could someone point me in the right direction please...

I'm researching the death of a family member in Witton Park, who was recorded as having died in 1873.

The 1871 Census lists Witton Park as being in the Parish of St. Pauls so I presume that the church of St. Pauls had already been built. Having driven past the church recently, it didn't appear to have a church yard.

1. Where will I find the burial records for Witton Park for that period?

2. Where would residents of Witton Park be be buried in 1873? Would it be Escomb Cemetery and if so, are there any burial records for the cemetery?

Thanks in advance!

Mark.

Hi Mark

Check the Genuki site for Escomb, Durham:

The following records for churches in the ancient parish of Escomb are also available at Durham County Record Office, County Hall, Durham, DH1 5UL:-

Witton Park 1869-1974 (EP/WP).

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

According to the Durham County Records Office website, there are no Burial Records deposited with them for Witton Park...

What about the burial question, would residents of Witton Park be buried in Escomb Cemetery?

Regards, Mark.

Hi Mark,

I looking for the same as you .......

I have a memorial card of a relative who died in 1898 .... it reads...

...... beloved wife of Woodside (which is Witton Park) ..... interred at Escomb Cemetery ....

I have visited the only cemetery there .... most of it is now gone ... there's a few headstones left in the long overgrown grass and a few propped up in long nettles around the outside wall ... but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

About a year ago I did email the council to try to find out which church they would have used .....to contact them for records but they didn't reply.....

I'd  forgotten all about it until I saw your post.

If you have any luck .... please let me know.

Jean

Hi Jean,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I had a trip along to Escomb cemetery today and it's in quite a sorry state...There isn't even a sign indicating that it was indeed Escomb cemetery!
I came across a few stones, which mentioned individuals from Witton Park, so I'm guessing this was where they were all interred, but as I can't locate the burial registers, I'm a bit stuck. I don't expect to find a grave stone, but I was at least hoping to confirm his burial location.
As I say, the records office don't appear to hold the Burial registers and St. Pauls doesn't appear to have a churchyard so it must be Escomb Cemetery?!?!
I'll have a go at the council and ask them for the information. At the same time, I'' double-check with the records office. If I find anything, I'll let you know...
Regards,

Mark.

St Paul's Witton Park was an ecclesiastical parish/district formed from Escomb St. John
in 1869,  and the church was apparently not authorised for burials.

Not all churches or chapels were authorised to hold burials, or even other ceremonies.
The division of Parishes into Districts and Chapelries.
The Church Building Act 59, Geo. 3, cap. 134, sec.16,  states;
"Provided always, that it shall be lawful for the Commissioners, with the consent of the Bishop of the Diocese, to determine.................... whether banns of marriage shall be published and marriages or baptisms, churchings or burials shall be solemnised or performed in any such chapel or not;"

If not St Pauls, have you any idea which church they would be buried from Stan?

Jean

Sorry ....... reading what you said again ......probably St John at Escomb

So, are we agreed that inhabitants of St. Pauls, Witton Park would be interred in Escomb cemetery?

Do we know when Escomb cemetery opened?

Regards, Mark.

I can't find any reference to that Mark ... with the burial records for St Johns stopping in 1870 it's confusing.

Hello Mark. The burials could be at Escomb (more than likely) but there are Witton Park residents buried at Witton le Wear.

I have posted surnames for both of these cemeteries.

Just google Monumental inscriptions followed by either Escomb or Witton le wear.

According to Durham Record Office they have the Burial records for Escomb St. John  from March 1543 to May 1943. As St.John's was built in 1863, the registers  will be from the ancient chapel attached to St. Andrew's.
The cemetery at Escomb was of two acres and formed in 1862.

Adam/Stan,

Thanks for the additional information. I think a trip to the Records Office is the next step and we'll see if that clarifies anything...

Adam, I've posted some MI requests on the relevent postings so hopefully they will turn something up.

Once again, thanks for your efforts.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

If you've had no luck at the Durham Records Office don't despair. I have been there and thought I was doomed never to find certain records. If your ancestors were Irish you might try looking in the records of churches such as St Wilfreds (Bondgate) which are at the offices. I have found Irish Catholic ancestor records there for members of my family who were living in Witton Park. Census returns show most people from Witton Park as living in Escombe due to the way the parish was catalogued. Hope this is of any help. PS if you know of any history of the Segary/Segarf/Segriff/Segrave/Seagrave/Legrave/Segruff family please let me know (they are all variant names I have found in census records for my ancestors)

Being a Witton Parker I thought i'd give my input on this.

St Paul's has no graveyard.  There is a cemetery at WP but that was only opened in the 1940's.

Places to check for burials of Witton Park residents

St John, Escomb
St Cuthbert, Etherley
St Philip & St James Witton le Wear
Also St Andrew, Auckland

All burial registers for these churches are at County Hall, Durham.

Cheers

Jay
