Hi, Everyone,
Have recently just about satisfied myself that the HART family who married into my family in 1846 may well have originated from Longhope in Gloucestershire...
I'm looking at a Joseph HART, bapt. 30-07-1779, along with 4 other siblings born to an Anthony and Ann HART. Is there a marriage for an Anthony and Ann prior to their first child being baptised in 1773, perhaps in a nearby village if not in Longhope itself?
Then, presumably looking for Joseph's father Anthony HART, there is a baptism for a likely candidate in the individual bapt. 26-12-1741 in Longhope, parents Anthony and Margaret; also a possible sister Hannah, bapt. 21-09-1740; not sure about an Elizabeth HART bapt. 20-12-1734, parents Anthony and Elizabeth.
Again, is there any marriage in the locality for an Anthony HART and a Margaret prior to 1740, or even a short-lived marriage for an Anthony and Elizabeth prior to 1734.
I do not know this part of the world at all, and if anyone with local knowledge can tell me anything interesting about Longhope, it would be much appreciated. Looking on the roadmap, the A40 appears to thunder past to the north, but the village appears to be still nicely tucked away off the main beaten tracks...
very best wishes,
keith

Thanks very much for that, Arranroots,
I'll get myself registered on there...

p.s. What a great site! Have already discovered a marriage on 19-11-1733 for an Anthony HART and an Elizabeth COWMEADOW in Longhope, which has to have a bearing on the family I'm interested in (Used to know someone with the COWMEADOW surname, and I think her family was from this part of the world too...)

Whoo hoo!
Cowmeadow is great! I have Barnfield - we should have married them to each other! (I've got a brand new combine harvester ...!!)
:D
-
Arranroots,
There are 693 COWMEADOW's - lots from a parish called Drybrook, which somehow adds to the magic - amongst their Parish records, and I imagine the name survives today in the area. I know that the horseracing world would have fun trying to name a foal/yearling with a sire called BARNFIELD and a dam called COWMEADOW, and I'm sure that Rootschatters would relish the challenge, given the chance.
Better not trumpet it, lest we get into trouble. But it really is an excellent site this Forest of Dean website, and I'm hopeful that I'll get hold of quite a bit of helpful genealogy...
Hope you have a good Christmas,
keith

Hi Keith
I was at school with a couple of Cowmeadows, still a very strong name in the area now as is the name Hart.
Regards
Susan :)

Susan,
Now THAT is interesting, especially as regards the HART name surviving. Makes me tempted to go on somewhere like genesconnected and see whether there are descendants of that Joseph HART generation from the late 18thC...
Many thanks,
keith

Thanks so much for all that lovely additional info re Longhope...
I've got a cousin who doesn't live that far away, and I shall be sending her on a reconnaissance mission to the village to have a bit of a look for me in the near future,
