Title: Census - Carrie Tanquary Sinclair
Post by: Aussie possum on Tuesday 23 December 08 12:12 GMT (UK)
I have had a couple of recent posts trying to sort out this Carrie Tanquary/Carey Townsend puzzle.  Well I am making progress.  The death certificate of my James Townsend arrived, and was all I hoped for.  After 5 years of researching, I have finally found "my" James, and proved it beyond all doubt.  The informant on the death certificate is Carrie Tanquary Sinclair, (his stepdaughter) so that proves she is still alive in 1923, and married.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find when and where the marriage took place, but I am hoping someone can find them on the US census and see if I can narrow down a timeframe.

Thanks

Rather than having to look up my previous posts to get the background on this....

Carrie was born in about 1870 - 1872 in Illinois, and was living in Livingston county in previous census.

Oooh, you have been busy while I have been asleep, Erato.  What  a wonderful collection of information..... far more than I expected.

I have a theory on the "gb".......

Given that the 1910 census lists "Margaret L", who is only one year older than Barbara E............ and then 1930 there is "Elizabeth" who is only a year older than Barbara.......... I reckon the "gb" stands for "goes by".  I have inherited the same from my own parents, who always called me by my middle name!

I think Carrie's husband might be the Evan Barker Sinclair mentioned in this biography:  http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/knox/1912_history_knox_co_il_bios_2.html#Robert_Gordon_Sinclair

The Illinois Death Index has Carrie T. Sinclair who died 11 Jul. 1942 at age 71 in Galesburg.  http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html  Also, Evan B. Sinclair died 20 Jan. 1946 in Evanston, Cook Co.

Thanks, Shelly.  That first site was an excellent account of the family, and very informative.

I found those entries on the ilsos website a couple of days ago, and emailed the county clerk in Knox about obtaining the death certificates for Carrie and her mother.  Unfortunately the "e-pay" facility is apparently not available to me, which is a pity as credit card would be the cheapest and quickest way to obtain them.  Unfortunately I will have to get a US money order which will probably cost more than the amount I need to send!  And I will have to wait till well after Christmas to be able to enquire here at our banks in Oz.  I have not as yet investigated the procedure in Cook county.  I probably will wait till I have the info from the other certificates before deciding if I need Evan's as well.

You might want to see if you can get obituaries for them to verify you have the right people, before you pay for the certificates.  There are people on raogk.org who do look-ups in Cook County, but there are none for Knox County at the moment.  It looks like the public library in Galesburg charges, so that probably won't make things cheaper.

Here are some sites I found where people might be able to help:
http://geneasearch.com/lookups/il.htm
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/county/knox/look_ups_knox_co.html

If that doesn't pan out, you might want to try posting on boards specifically about Knox County on rootsweb.com, genealogy.com, genforum.com, etc.

Thanks, Shelley.  I have just emailed someone on the first of those sites, so I hope they are able to come up with something that will be helpful.

New members must make at least three postings before being allowed to use the Personal Message facility, so Michael would need to post twice more to have full use of it.  See Help-Page for further info:  http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php

Evan (pronounced even) Barker Sinclair was one of 5 children born to Alexander Sinclair and Margaret Griffith Sinclair.  Alexander was born in Pennsylvania cand Margaret was born in Wales.  Their children were Barbara b.1865, Robert Gordon (my great grandfather) b. 1866, Evan Barker b. 1870, Mary Flora b. 1871, and Irwin A. b. 1880.

Evan married Carrie (Tanquary) and had two children, Elizabeth (Cady) b. 1 Jul 1906 and died 21 Jun 2006, and Barbara (Deckard) b. 1908?  Evan was in business at one point with my great grandfather at Sinclair Brothers Ice Cream in Galesburg, IL.  They manufactured ice cream and bottled soda.  I found one thing on Carrie.  She was a nurse and she, along with 4 other nurses from Galesburg, established the American Red Cross in that city in 1916.
