				Hi
I am looking for more children in the following family during the 1841 Census.

 Charles Bates b ~1811 Marsworth
 Sophia wife b ~ 1805 Puttenham Herts

 children
 William b ~ 1833 Marsworth
 James b ~ 1842 Marsworth.

 there must be more children
 because in the 1871 census

William has a nephew Henry b 1854 Marsworth.

 Could John Bates b ~ 1835 Marsworth - be a sibling?

I would love to find the rest of this family  :)

 many thanks

				Hi

 1841 Census for Marsworth shows:

 Charles Bates     30
 Sophia Bates       35
 William Bates        3
 James Bates          2

 Ref. HO107 - 50 - 12 - 6 - 7

 No other children I'm afraid.

Thankyou for looking for them Annette  :D

Is there no sign of a family with John Bates born Marsworth in the 1841 Census?

(He is in the 1861 with family and I am curious as to whom he belongs!)

				Hi Tanya

 1851 Census - Marsworth

Newman Bates     Head 43     b. Marsworth
 Mary Bates           Wife   45           ditto
 John Bates            Son    17           ditto
 Hannah Bates       Dau    14           ditto
 Ann Bates             Dau     12          ditto
 James Bates          Son     8            ditto
 Eliza Bates            Dau     6             ditto

 Ref. HO107 - 1716 - 250 - 7

Couldn't initially find on 1841 but then found mistranscribed:

 1841 - Marsworth

 Newman BATE     30
 Mary Bate            35
 John Bate             6
 William Bate         4
 Hannah Bate        5
 Ann Bate              2

 Ref. HO107 - 50 - 12 - 6 - 6

Looks like Newman could be brother of Charles.

Also found a William Bates   60 living with family named Chappin
 (ref. HO107 - 50 - 11 - 6 - 6)

and still with them in 1851 - now aged 67 (?) - born Marsworth
 (ref.HO107 - 1716 - 255 - 17)

This William could be father of Newman and Charles.

				Hi Annette
 Thankyou for your help.

This is when I start to get confused and lose track of what I am asking....
 too many names the same!!

Old William and Mary are the parents of Charles. (old William with Chappins)
Charles and Sophia are the parents of William and James.
Not sure when Charles and Sophia married.
William born (1838) James born (1839)??? according to 1841 census.

In the 71 Census William has a nephew Henry b ~1854 Marsworth.
I am not sure who this Henry belongs to if William doesnt have older siblings as I know James' wife and family and there is no henry!

Because the first census is 1841 there is probably no way of finding siblings for the children of Charles and Sophia, and therefore the father of this Henry.

I have never found a connection to Newman, as I believe his father is also Newman.

I am finding lots of dead ends or limitations in the resources (or at least the ones I know of).

Thanks for all of your wonderful help,
and if you have a suggestion I would be VERY grateful
 :)

Checked 1861 Census and Henry would appear to be the son of John Bates (the son of Newman).

 1861 Census - Lavendon, Bucks.

 John Bates     27       b. Marsworth
Sarah Bates   28       b. Preston Bissett, Bucks.
 Henry J. Bates  7       b. Marsworth
Phoebe Ann Bates  5      b. Stapleton Wisk, Yorks.
 Magnet (?) Bates    3      b. Gainford, Durham
(think this must be Margaret - def. a daughter)
Sarah Jane Bates   3 mos.      b. Alney, Bucks.

 (ref.RG9 - 876 - 35 - 21)

It seems to me that you really do need to check the Marsworth parish registers which are not available online.   However, Buckinghamshire Family History Society have transcribed them and will do a search for you if you do a postal request.   If I read it correctly then they will search the parish for you and give you all baptism entries relating to that name in a 100 years period that you specify for £3.   (Presumably would be £3 each to check burials and marriages too but I didn't check those).   The name/address of the person to contact is shown.   On-line address:

 http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk

You could post a message requesting a look-up in Marsworth on the Buckinghamshire Look-up Request Board here but there's no guarantee that anyone will do this.

Hope this helps - good luck.

There are 2 William Bates about the same age both born in Marsworth. William Bates son of Charles Bates and his 1st wife Maria nee Coshier and William Bates son of Newman Bates and Mary nee Oakley. The second William is the uncle of Henry John Bates born 1853.

Newman Bates born 1809, bp 1815 is the cousin of our ancester Thomas Bates who married Elizabeth Cartwright in 1839.

The name Newman Bates seems fairly common in Bucks. I have been looking for a Bates/Newman marriage in the early 1700's probably in the Drayton Parslow area from where I suspect the name originates.

I can email you my updated Bates tree Tanya. I know we've exchanged information before but I have lost your personal email address.
