Hi, I already have the 1851 Index for West Sculcoates, Hull and believe there to be a transcribing error which is causing problems and wondered if some kind soul could check the following entry for me in the actual census.
On page 29 of the index (section A - J) it states:-
COCKIN
Joseph (42) Ealwod LIN 614
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be such a place as "Ealwod. LIN" and a search of the Genuki register of Lincolnshire Parishes/churches has proved fruitless.
Any assistance in deciphering the actual place of birth of Joseph Cockin would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

No doubt you are aware that on the 1861 the birthplace is Lincoln. I presume he retired after 25 years of service.

Hi Wobbly, Many thanks for that info, I shall tie it all together later today (the wife wants a run out this morning!).
Strange that the place "Ealwood" is listed when it doesn't appear to have existed??
Thanks again,
Wak.

Have you tried posting on the Lincoln board, someone on there recently helped me find an obscure place in Lincolnshire.
happy hunting

Yes Thanks, Bee, I have already tried the Lincolnshire Board with no joy but thanks for your input.
I think I shall leave it as Lincoln as suggested by Wobbly.

Hello,
Had a look on the original return and it looks like Ealand to me.

Many thanks for that info, Edmund.
Obviously a transcribing error as in 1881 Joseph and his wife were in Winterton which is only 10 or 12 miles away from Ealand.
I shall alter my copy of the index accordingly.
Thanks again for looking at the original.
