Hi
I was wondering if anyone would able to help me. I am doing the family history of the Knox (from my dad's side) and I am getting a bit stuck on it. I am trying to trace Margaret Lamont and William Knox marriage around 1867 to 1869 as their first child called Eliza was born 1970. William Knox and Margaret Lamont were from Grove Street, Belfast area and I have tried Ulster Historical Foundation, St. Anne's, Sinclair's Seaman's church and also Emerald as well. I don't know where else can I try. I was able to track down the children's marriages except for Martha Ellen Knox as we do think she married into a McMenemy (McMenamy) as my granda had a cousin who's second name was McMenemy (McMenamy) but we are not sure. ??? ??? ??? ???

In 1877 the street directory as listed on www.lennonwylie.co.uk/efgcomplete1877.htm
shows
Grove Street
Cross Street to North Queen Street
9. Knox, Wm., china and delf shop assistant
going backwards to 1861, no Knox lived in Grove Street, but among the Knox listed, just around the corner in 22 North Queen Street is a Mrs Knox
here they all are
Knox, C. G., barrister-at-law and vicar-general, consistorial office, 8 or 3 Donegall Place Buildings. * Holywood.
Knox, Mrs., 83 Balmoral Terrace.
Knox, Mrs., 62 Apsley Place.
Knox, Mrs., 22 North Queen Street.
Knox, Mrs. Edmund F., 25 University Square.
Knox, Rev. Robert, 7 Linenhall Street.
Knox, Robert, boot and shoe maker, 23 Gilford Street.
Knox, William, baker, 62 Lonsdale Street.
Knox, John, letter carrier, 45 California Street.
go back to 1852 not at 22 but this time No. 20
Knox, Alexander, gentleman, 8 Apsley Place
Knox, Cornelius, boot closer, 26 Robert Street
Knox, John, manufacturer, 109 Donegall Street
Knox, John, gentleman, 20 North Queen Street
Knox, Mrs. Alice, 9 College Street South
Knox, Mrs., 10 University Square
Knox, Robert, boot and shoe maker, 60 High Street

Knox, Robert, shoe maker, 11 Wesley Place

Hi
Thank you for trying to help me as it was a really good help. All I know about William Knox is that he came from County Antrim, was a Labourer and also the children they had. I have a strong feeling that William Knox worked in a china and delf shop as there was a Lamont owned a shop around the corner from it. I tried the family search, and other websites and thank you again. :) :) :)

Hi
I'm sorry as I should have said which corner :-[. I think Margaret Lamont is related to Ann Lamont from the Earthern Ware Shop but I am not 100% sure. This is where I am a bit stuck. Then I seen a marriage for William Knox and Margaret Lamont from Ballymoney and it said they were both widowed. I don't know if these are my ancestors or not. ??? ??? ???

Have you tried the NIFHS Genealogy new Search Engine which has Lamont entries and I would guess Knox entries. If you go down the Knox line clutching for straws, there are two Knox trees at least in volumes 54 and 62 , both have some connection with Anketells, these volumes are in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707, Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586,
Email: <irish.reference[at]linenhall.com>.replace the [AT] with the symbol please.
Finally have you exhausted
www.familysearch.com and emeraldancestors.com
If you get back to early 1700s, some new research was done on the Knoxs in Ulster, for a revision of a book privately published in the USA since 2000, that didnt happen. I have that buried amonst papers somewhere if wanted. Watch out for your connections to the american president Polk etc!
