Title: Fresh search for ancestors - surnames "Tweedie" and "McCall"
Post by: king_goonie on Wednesday 17 December 08 11:33 GMT (UK)
Hi folks,

I'm keen on tracing as far back into the history of my family.

My dad's family surname is McCall.
My mother's is Tweedie.

My birthplace is Galashiels, which is also where all of my relatives were born.

In terms of research, where would be the best place to start? I can't afford to spend money on research, but understand that this will give me access to the best resources.

Would also like to hear from people who have info to hand on either of these surnames?

Thanks for your time,
Dave McCall

Hi Dave,

Can you maybe give grandparents names and birth/marriage dates if known. This will ensure it is your family that is researched.

To Peaches: This could be very useful! Thank you very much.

To Tidybooks: My father's parents are Thomas and Betty McCall - I am unsure of her maiden name, but will find this out very soon.

My mother's mother is Janette Wilson, her maiden name being Tweedie. I am unsure of my mother's father's name, as he died when she was very young. However, I'll also find this out very soon.

The only information about my family history I know: my mother's side descend from fishing families on the West Coast of Scotland, most likely Glasgow.

Thank's very much for your time.
Dave McCall

Hi Dave,

Got 7 results for a Thomas McCall marrying an Elizabeth in Scotland between 1855 and 1932, this is earliest we can get marriages online in Scotland Peoples website, SP. So if Thomas and Elizabeth married after 1932, we would need someone to visit GRO at one of the main centres Edinburgh or Glasgow.

1858   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth McArthur    – Edinburgh     685/01 0163
1873   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth Gilchrist   - Kirkcudbright           860/00 0003
1876   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth Park   - Glasgow                     644/07 0370
1880   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth Hockey   - Edinburgh     685/03 0036
1893   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth Murray   - Kirkcudbright           870/00 0001
1894   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth Baillie   - Falkirk                     479/00 0127
1898   Thomas McCall   Elizabeth McCall   - Edinburgh     685/01 0363

If you can verify one of them as yours, that would give us their parents, so a great start. The numbers are reference numbers on Marriage Certificates on SP, you can register at that site, and 30 credits cost Ł6. It would cost 6 credits to download a marriage certificate (MC)

However when and/or where were your parents born and/or married, this may assist too.

Hi Dave,

Did similar to Tweedie and Wilson side, also got 7 results.

1863   James Wilson   Agnes Tweedie    Carnwath -    632/00 0009
1874 Alexander Wilson Agnes Tweedie   Carnwath    632/00 0009
1882   James Wilson   Isabella Tweedie   Gorbals    -       644/12 0456
1882   James Wilson Jessie Tweedie      Blackfriars -    644/05 0186
1895   Peter Wilson Mary Tweedie      Carnwath -       632/01 0010
1923   John Wilson Mary Kelly Tweedie   Springburn -     644/06 0251
1929 Nathaniel Wilson Elizabeth Tweedie   Carnwath -       632/01 0007

Janette could be interchangable with Jessie, other than that marriage maybe after 1932.

Hi Liz,

Can you maybe open up new subject for your query, your query is different to the original, and will only confuse matters. Thanks in anticipation.

Tom

Sorry I know this isn't keeping on the original topic but wanted to reply to a previous post

For Liz Hamilton.....

I've been trying for a while to find out more information surrounding the marriage between Peter Tweedie/Jessie Ashwood. Certain details you have written about above seem to tie in with what i know eg hughs father was a hairdresser, Jessie died only a couple of weeks after childbirth also i can't find Jessies birth certificate and the time frame is similar also.
On Hugh and Jessies marraige cert. she states her parents are William and Mary. Perhaps we could be looking for the same people

It would be interesting to hear from you

Kym

I've been looking into the family history too, Dave! It's Annie - Jacki's oldest! Nana's maiden name was Burt and was from Stoneyburn, just outside Edinburgh!
