My tree starts with my 6 great-grandfather Wm Thirlaway marrying Isabel Ramsey on 7 June 1747 in Whickham.
I suspect that Wm had a previous marriage as he was 37 when he married Isabel. I have not been able to confirm my suspicions. Any help will be enormously appreciated. Contact with Thirlaway relatives will be a bonus. I have so far found 8 variatons of the Thirlaway spelling in use and have 22 variations from Ancestry sources most of which I have hopefully corrected.

Hello Bill, Welcome to Rootschat! :) I have the Whickham marriage index on fiche at home and my index shows your ancestor indexed as "Thirwell" but the wife's name and date are a match. Also, my index supposedly lists any persons who married and were widows or widowers with a margin notation. In the case of your ancestors, there are no notations, so we are to presume (ahem!) that it was a first marriage for both of them AND that they were both from Whickham. There are some other Thirlaways listed in my index for Whickham...are you interested in them? Happy hunting! Pat

Hi Pat,
Thank you for the speedy reply. I have Wm born in Lamesly & Isabel in Whickham. I had been led to believe that Wm was married to an Isabel Richardson with no date for the marriage. Would your index have that?
I have a Laura Thirlaway marrying an Alfred Reay abt 1934 and a Dugald Mowitt Paulin marrying my great aunt Rosanna Philip Robb in 1965 they were both pensioners at the time of marriage in my hometown of Wallsend upon Tyne.
You must be up with the lark to be writing to me assuming of course that you are in the UK

Hi Bill, Sorry, not a lark. :'( Just live on the other side of the planet - USA. Anyway, for Whickham, my fiche also shows Francis Thirlaway m. Isable Richardson 3 March 1776 AND and Thomas Thirwell (Monkwearmouth notation) m. Ann Burkus 19 April 1826. All of my marriage index fiche start at the beginning of parish registers (abt early 1600's) and end with the advent of civil registration in 1837. So, those earlier ones you'll have to look up in www.freeBMD or the GRO index. NOW, I have found many of my Whickham people married in near-by Ryton/Winlaton parish. So, I am taking the liberty of sending you those, also: Peter Thirlwell m. Elizabeth Robson 3 June 1766; Peter (widower) m. Ann Hall 28 May 1768; John Thirlwell m. Jane Richardson 9 June 1796; Peter Thirlwell m. Dorothy Hunter 8 June 1802; Christopher Thirlwell m. Ann Hawdon 25 June 1810. ALSO, I have a fiche of the Whickham MI's...if you have any lookups for that let me know. And, I have birth registers from beginning of the parish records in Whickham (and some Ryton) to about 1810. I have the Lamseley marriage index fiche and I could not find any Thirlwells or variations listed at all...WHEW! ;D Let me know if I can be of any help to you. Pat

Hi Pat,
Reply delayed due to computer problems. I do not have any Thirwell's on my tree, thats not to say there shouldn't be. I would be pleased to know of any MI's, I hope that is Monumental Inscriptions, as I know for certain that there is at least one stone in the Whickham St Mary graveyard with birth and death dates for Robert Thirlaway. If it is not too much trouble an excess of data will be greatly appreciated.
Your side of the USA is having such a variety of weather this past month Brushfires because of drought, ice and snowstorms we just have heat and rain yesterday we had inches of rain.

Hello Bill, You just won the UK Lottery! ;D I am going to post these MIs in different messages to make sure you get them. I'll do the most recent one first: " In loving memory of William, dearly beloved husband of Isabel Thirlaway, who entered into rest Sept. 25, 1927 age 68 years. Also, the above Isabel Thirlaway who died May 12, 1937 age 71 years." I'll send two more MIs by separate message. They are MUCH longer and contain zillions of your rellies! Are you doing the happy dance yet?? :) Pat

Another tombstone - apparently adjacent to the previous one: "The family burial place of Robert and Hannah Thirlaway of Streetgate Lane. Joseph their son died Dec. 23, 1799 age 7 years. Francis their son died Oct 27, 1801 age 3 years. Isabella their daughter died June 8, 1811 age 15 years. Ann their daughter died June 28, 1811 age 27 years. John their son died Dec. 8, 1812 age 30 years. Robert their son died Dec 14, 1819 age 30 years. The above, Robert Thirlaway, died May 25, 1831 age 72 years. The above Hannah Thirlaway died May 2, 1839 age 85 years." Let me know if you would like any specific birth register information on births before 1800. ;) Pat

Hi Pat,
Pleased is not the word for how I feel about the data sent. It is extremely helpful thank you. There was one rude surprise, that of the death of Robert 14 Dec 1819 son of Robert and Hannah in the the third e-mail. I had him dying 8 Oct 1836 and leaving a wife Barbara Thurlaway his first cousin of Birtley Bank Co Durham & children. So it is back to the drawing board there and the deletion of a whole raft of relatives for now at least. Any data on births will also be most welcome. In your 2nd of 3 messages you have a William d 10 Aug 1845 I have a copy of his will written over 4 A3 sheets of paper. Detailing how his land etc was to be shared amongst his wife, children and close relatives a very interesting document.
The rains continue here we are supposed to be out of the monsoon by now and into quite pleasant weather.
I'm guessing that you work nights and are able to do genealogy during quiet periods.
Thank you once more for the help.

Hello Bill, Glad some of the information verified your family -- sorry you'll have to temporarily prune a few twigs off the old family tree. You'll probably wind up grafting them to another branch later on! ;D My job since I've retired is searching my roots and helping others when I can. It's become a full time job - or is that obsession?? :o I'll see if any of those births might be in the few fiche I have for Whickham. Also, Bill, a lot of Whickham is covered in the IGI under extracted records. Sometimes, however, the parish register has a bit more information....Give the IGI a look! Later! Pat

Hello Anthony, I am sorry that I cannot help you out with the 1901 census...however, that would be a big help to you, as Pearson is quite a common name. One thing I can help you with is to eliminate one factor. I have the readings of the MIs in Whickham cemetery...there are only two stones for any Pearson people. One is for a William Henry Pearson who was born in Newcastle on Tyne - so that's not yours. The only other Pearson stone is a very old one that is mostly illegible; however, it refers to a son named Jonathan. Again, not yours. So, it appears that none of your male Pearsons were buried there. If you do find any of the marriages for the women in the family, I would be pleased to try to find them in my fiche. Finally, you may have better success with your request if you make a new posting and put it on the County Durham board with the heading of "Pearson family census in 1901" or some such identifier. Happy hunting! Pat
