Title: Shackletons of Manchester
Post by: lorrainec on Sunday 14 December 08 00:41 GMT (UK)
I am looking for any info on the Shackleton family of Manchester.  I have Martha Shackleton b. 1837 in Manchester, m. Richard Edwards and had a daughter Isabel.  Martha d. in Bute, Scotland.

Any help is appreciated!

Hello lorrainec

What information are you looking for?  Do you need census or parish register lookups?
If you'd like to say what information you already have, that would help.

Possible birth registration for her if you don't already have her birth certificate

The IGI site www.familysearch.org has the following:

a marriage which may be the right one as Michael was born about 1818
William Shackleton  to  Isabella Baynes   1 Jan 1818      Lancaster, Lancashire

I wonder if William married twice (again to an Isabella) as there's a gap of 10 years from Michael to Mary

There's another marriage for William Shackleton to Isabella Lamb, 3 Mar 1825 Manchester Cathedral,  then some of the children's baptisms from 1826-1832 are there

Thank you!

Trying to determine if William did marry twice and if so, which Isabella is which?!

Also looking for Martha's marriage to Richard Edwards - probably around 1857-59.

Hi Lorraine,

the marriage is on freebmd  Dec 1856  Fylde  8e 744 Richard Edwards with Martha Shackleton on same page

if you look on the Lancashire bmd site http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ you'll find the marriage and a possible Isabella's birth 1860 there too and can order the certs through http://www.rootschat.com/links/052y/

Do you need later census information?

Barbara  :)

Looking at the original image for the Shackleton family at 72 Travis Street, Manchester, to which Barbara refers, it appears that the word 'Wife' next to Isabella's name has been crossed out.

Please see here:

http://www.pgtaylor.co.uk/Peter/1841%20William.jpg

Isabella may therefore have been William's sister.

Hi,

I think you'll find that's just a mark made by the person checking the census, you'll see another 'wife' crossed out further down the page.  Maybe they didn't feel it ought to have been entered in the occupation column, relationships not usually shown in 1841. All the other occupations are ticked.

Hi Brenda

Was Jane born on the 14th of March, 1792 in Colne, Lancashire and was her mother's name Nancy?

I always like to get confirmation for these things but at the moment it's probably safe to mark down - in pencil - the IGI Batch number C012894.

According to the LDS, Jane was christened at St Bartholomew's Church, Colne on the 13th of May, 1792.

http://www.lancashirechurches.co.uk/colne.htm

Please note: There is no confirmation from St Bartholomews that Jane SHACKLETON was baptised there in 1792.

However, there is a record that Jane's brother Richard was baptised there in 1794...

Baptism: 14 Dec 1794 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Richard Shackleton - Son of Richard Shackleton & Nancy
    Born: 12 Aug 1794
    Abode: Colne
    Occupation: Glazier
    Register: Baptisms 1790 - 1812, Page 56, Entry 15
    Source: LDS Film 1471024

Source - Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Colne/stbartholomew/index.html

With a name like Hartley, I'd love to know if Nancy and Richard Shackleton came from the Todmorden area...

...No - the indications are that Richard was born around 1763 in Colne and that he married Nancy on the 29th of March, 1788 at St. Bartholomew's.

Again in pencil...

Richard's birth - LDS Film number 452050

...And Jane Shackleton's marriage to James WHALLEY on the 27th September, 1818:

Source Information:
Batch No.:  Dates:  Source Call No.:  Type:  Printout Call No.:  Type:

 M005206  1818 - 1824  1068760   Film  6904235   Film

 Sheet: 00

The marriage was registered in Burnley, which was the registration district for Colne in 1818 but I cannot confirm where the wedding took place. Specifically, there is no record at St Bartholomew's that a marriage took place there  in 1818 between Jane Shackleton and James Whalley.

Hi Brenda,

James Whalley and Jane were married at St. Peters Parish Church, Burnley.  M005206 refers to St. Peters.  Trust me on this.

They could not have been married at All Saints Habergham as it wasn`t built unitl 1845.

Regards,
Mo

Hi Mo,
Thank you very much for that information, I was kind of wondering about that, the older information was passed down from another Whalley relative, her gr grgr grandfather is the brother of my gr gr gr gr grandfather ! I get so confused with all these greats ! I think I will go check the OPC for more Whalleys !

Hi Brenda

Yes please, I would very much like to receive copies of these for my files.

I am related to the Shackletons, yes, but the Shackletons are a huge family and not all of them are closely related. It's great fun doing the research though! I am considering doing a one-name study of them in much the same way as someone has already done with the Uttleys.

My great, great aunt, Mary Isabella Wolfenden, married the farmer next door, Thomas Shackleton and made me a relative by marriage.

Hi Lorraine
I am few years late but I am also researching Martha Shackleton who married Richard Edwards.
Lorraine did you manage to get a copy of their marriage certificate or her birth certificate - I could have other information I can share as I have done some comprehensive research on Martha's daughter Isabell Edwards who married William Sommerville.
 ;) :D
