I am really stuck on Frederick William John Fairbrother, in the 1901 census he states he was born in Todenham,Gloucester. I did find a family which fitted every detail I had found out but it turns out this is not my Frederick. My Aunt did tell me that at one time he lived in Rutland Gate in Knightsbridge. Frederick born 1859 name of his Father is John Fairbrother. Rumour has is that John Fairbrother was the head coachman for the Duke of Buccleuch. In 1901 I have found Frederick and his Family living in Cumberland. I have tried 1837, and FreeBMD all to no avail. There is a Frederick born the same year in Gloucester, but a kind lady researching the same family sent off for the birth certificate and this Frederick is Frederick C Fairbrother. Any help greatly appreciated

Unless you have his birth certificate you do not really know how he was christened. I was about to post the same information as Paul about the 1871 census.
You can look up the Duke of Buccleuch on thh web. I doubt if he had a house in Gloucestershire - Northants and London - yes.

Sorry Hack... :)
Maria - can you post all the details you have from 1901 as it will help locating Frederick earlier

Hi Paul
I actually have that census information from 1871 and also 1891 with Frederick Fairbrother, Father named John, but when I contacted someone researching the same Family she told me it was not my Frederick Fairbrother. In the census it only says Frederick no second initial, so she sent off for the birth certificate and told me that the Frederick in the census is Frederick C not Frederick W.
Frederick was married twice, with four children from the first marriage, the only marriage I could find for Frederick Fairbrother was a marriage to Mary Jane Coupland in the June qtr of 1881 in Cumberland. And I have no idea of the names of his children, although I did find a Frederick Wm and a Mary J in the 1891 census in Workington, Cumberland RG12/4305 Folio 93 Page 30. Where he says he was born in Moreton, Gloucester.
His second marriage was to Margaret Jane Graham in the March qtr of 1896. Margaret Jane also had two children when they married and I have found them in the 1901 census in Cumberland RG13/4884 living at 21 Pilgrim St.
I have the marriage certificate for Frederick and Margaret married in Cockermouth on the 21/03/1896 Frederick aged 37yrs and name of his Father is John, occupation Coachman and he was deceased at the time of Frederick's marriage to Margaret.
The following is only rumour, that when Frederick went to the doctor in Cumberland (the doctor was from London) he asked Frederick what he was doing in this neck of the woods as he knew him. The other rumour is he left home never to return as his family wanted him to be a jockey, I hope I am not rambling on too much. Then my aunt remembered that Frederick was supposed to have lived at Rutland Gate in Knightsbridge perhaps when he was a young boy.
Thank you Paul and Hack for taking the time to reply to my posting
Regards

Given that your Frederick supposedly lived in Knightsbridge at some time then I would think it more likely to be the London family that are yours rather than the Cumberland one. Have you been following the wrong trail altogether?
You will have noticed though that both of these Frederick's were born in the same area at the same time. You might well have the correct birth certificate but you will have to check back from the beginning ................
Which of Frederick's children do you descend from? Have you got their birth certificate which will give you the parents' full names?

Hi casalguidi
I descend from the Fairbrothers in Cumberland, Emma Victoria Fairbrother is my Grandmother. Her brother is Robert Horatio born in the June qtr of 1900. I have Emma's birth certificate. Born 18/06/1897 name of Parents are Frederick William John Fairbrother and Margaret Jane Fairbrother formerly Graham. Address 21 Pilgrim Street, Workington. I also have a copy of the original census RG13/4884.
I also have Frederick's death certificate 02/04/1919 at 15 Darcy Street, Workington, Cumberland.

In the 1911 census Frederick states he was born in South Kensington London. So I have no idea why in earlier census's he says he is born in Gloucestershire, have no idea what his connection is, unless he has family there. I have tried looking for his Father John Fairbrother using various birth dates but so far no luck with this family.
With his first marriage his Father is still alive but when Frederick marries Margaret Graham his Father is no longer alive.
