Title: Stewart, McKinnon, Dunsmuir, Luke origionating from Rothesay and Greenock areas.
Post by: Annickburn on Friday 12 December 08 11:55 GMT (UK)
Hi
I am looking for possible living relatives or family researchers from Bute/Greenock area.

I have William Stewart m Catherine McDonald McKinnon
they had 6 children:

I have some info on 4 of the children:

From those four children I have a little information on their children:

It is the McKinnon Connection that I come from and I would be really pleased to hear from anyone who has any of these names in their tree.

I would also like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of Newsagents in Greenock called Dobbie or Dunsmuir, perhaps there are some old pictures of their shop  ;)

Thanks

Melanie

Hi Melanie,
this is a very long shot, but you never know your luck do you? I have a Mckinnon ancestor, namely Sarah. She married Daniel Smith, a painter. Their marriage was "booked for proclomation 14th May 1843 in Glasgow.
Daniel was living in Cathcart Street Greenock at this time.
One of their daughters, Elizabeth, c1845, married John Robertson at Union Street Greenock, 2nd Jan 1865. I have hit the proverbial brick wall with both Sarah and Daniel, so any help would be very much appreciated, many thanks,
Marion.

Hi Marion

I was a wee bit excited by your reply because I have a Sarah McKinnon a sister of Catherine... :'( sadly Sarah (Marion) wasn't born until abt 1838 so she is not (at the moment) a link.

However with respect to your own research, I HATE brickwalls, what I have discovered is it looks as though your Sarah McKinnon died before 1850, Daniel in fact had 4 wives in his life-time :o he did father a further 3 children, 2 girls (3 marriage ??) and a boy (4th Marriage ??) before his death, however I don't know for sure if Elizabeth was his only child with Sarah, what I do know is that Daniel's mother was called Elizabeth so that follows on with traditional family naming and his father was called John (Perhaps there was another child John  ::) I can't be sure as it was all before statutory registration ???
I do have Daniel's death Registration, marriages of all his wives and some Census Records of which I am sure you would like....just let me know and I can let you know the details...

Sorry that I couldn't find a concrete link with my Sarah (Marion) and yours.... :(.....however I would be happy to find out how you get along with your research and if the info I have has helped in any way! ;)

Kindest regards

Melanie

Hi Melanie,
What a shame that we aren't connected, still you never know we may find a link further along the line? I can't believe how much information you have for me! I would be so grateful for anything, so whatever you are happy to give me, I will be delighted! Just as a matter of interest, where have you found all of this? I am in awe of your expertise! I am finding my Scotish ancestors quite difficult to research, in comparison to the English side. Could you give me any advise on where to look please? I have a lot of Robertson family from Greenock, which is not the most unusual of Scottish names! My email is

I have just sent you a PM :

"If you resend your email using the PM I will forward all the information I have, I think you may be able to research further in this line from the info I found.  Most of what I found was on Scotlandspeople and I started with the information you gave me about the Marriage of Elizabeth Smith and John Robertson.  I will send you all the Documents for your file but I can only do it via Email!

cheers
Melanie

Hi there annickburn
I am just starting to research into my family roots after a revelation by my mother who was born Moira Anne Stewart during a phone call while I was visiting Eigg, that her great grandfather, William Stewart   married a Catherine McKinnon from Eigg. She had travelled down from Eigg with her sister Sarah. William Stewart travelled round Bute buying and selling milk and one thought was that Catherine might have been a bondager??She wasnt sure of the dates but knew that her grandfather William Stewart was born in 1868 on Bute.
I entered the names into a search engine and this thread came up.

My mother recognised all the names of the 6 kids of the original Catherine Mckinnon and William Stewart apart from Peter and also didnt know if Catherines middle name was McDonald.
Her grandfather William Stewart b. 1868  on Bute became  a customs and exciseman and married Susanna Campbell and had 13 children (one of whom Cissy died very young). My mothers father Andrew Stewart was one of these 13 children. He married Alice Thomson and they had 2 children Moira Anne (my mother) and Andrew Stewart (the Scottish entertainer/ singer)

My mum knew the Dunsmuir connection and also that Mary Luke's daughter Catherine married a Tommy Homes

This may be coincidence with names and dates but my mums quite sure it all ties in.

I am trying to get some dates for Catherine and Sarah's births and learn more about them and where they stayed on Eigg as I have a couple of friends who stay on the island and wondered if you could possibly help me.

I am also getting more info from other relatives in my mums family to try and ascertain whether this is the same family connection?

I thank you for your time and consideration of this matter and you could mail me privately if you wish.

Regards
Willam Andrew Perry
