Title: Metal box maker's assistant 1921
Post by: B. on Thursday 11 December 08 13:15 GMT (UK)
I am trying to trace a lady who described herself as a metal box maker's assistant in Shoreditch London in 1921. I think that she was Sarah Elizabeth Bowes (Bower?).  Would there be trade directories for this kind of work? B.

Hi B,

Companies which made metal boxes would appear in directories. There's a business called the Metal Box Company Limited which was founded in 1921. The best way to find where Sarah worked would be to try trade union records. I'm sorry I'm not certain which union would be the appropriate one.

Think you would have to try a new union 'Unite', or the Transport & General Workers Unon. A lot of the metal unions merged with them. Try these first.

No probs.
Could well have been the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers,
they had up to the last 10 years or so, premises on Rochdale Rd, Harpurhey, Manchester - they merged with what is now called 'Unite-the Union'
