Title: Oxleaze Farm
Post by: merilyn64todhunter on Thursday 11 December 08 11:15 GMT (UK)
I am needing a photo of Oxleaze Farm near Woolstone. Wonderignif anyone has one or knows where I could get one? My Great Grandmother Sarah Jane Hathrill 1850-1933 lived there. Anything on the history of the Farm would also be appreciated
Thanks Merilyn

Hi Merilyn

You could try this site, it has some photo's of around Woolstone.
Just type in Woolstone in the search box, top right hand side, and then when you get a list of woolstone's come up just tick the circle next to Woolstone Gloucs

Hi Merilyn

I should be able to help BUT the farm you mention doesn't appear on the modern Ordnance Survey map of Woolstone - any idea where it is/ was?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Good piece here on Oxleaze:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66469

Two-storey stone farmhouse in 1803 bulging side walls and with two barns and two stables among the stone outbuildings, was rebuilt in the early 19th century.

In the late 20th century it became a private residence and the extensive ranges of farm buildings were converted as houses.

Hi Merlyn

Quite pleased with that result unless you come back and say that your Oxleaze is definitely in Gloucestershire, then we will have to think again

1km ENE from Cowleaze (see post above) is another farm called Oxleaze Farm, this is North from Woolstone and W from Uffington. Grid Ref is SU 291 892.
Whether this was ever in Gloucestershire I don't know.
The Woolstone in Glos is between Gloucester and Cheltenham just N of Gotherington and the next hamlet northwards is Oxenton.

In order to ascertain for certain where you are searching for it would be useful if you could post a census reference.

Yes, that would most likely be it, I know I found it by typing in the name Oxleaze on Google earth, it is about 1.9 kilometres from Woolstone, east & slightly north, and about 1.3 kilometres from Uffington.
Thank you so much

I think to bowl this one out it would be useful if someone could provide census information trying to get a cross reference on Sarah Jane Hathrill at Cowleaze 1850-1930?  From there we might be able to tie down the location.

To build the picture:

From Free BMD: Hathrill Sarah Jane

Woolstone was in Berkshire

I think we can say based on the free bmd reference to Faringdon that the Glos Woolstone by Gotherington is not the one we are looking for  :-\

This looks right to me.  If you tie in the:

http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/Companies/Oxleaze-Bungalow

Oxleaze Farm Woolstone, Faringdon, Oxfordshire SN7 7QS (which has the same postcode as Cowleaze), you can see bungalowes being built for the farmer as he gets older and when the farm is passed on.  It would dead handy if someone local could walk the patch and perhaps provide a digital photo but that is asking a lot.  Failing that I would give the comapny at COWLEAZE a ring (it is very close) and schmoooooze them for information and xould you possibly .... take a picture. Ho Ho Ho.

It would still be nice to build up census data to work out the buildings and ownership of the buildings around COWLEAZE, OXLEAZE and Woolstone (Berkshire).

Marry Xmas

Could have done with this yesterday:

Uffington,SU3089
Uffington: Britchcombe Farm,SU3087

Uffington: Oxleaze Farm,SU2989
Uffington: Ridgeway,SU3086

Uffington: The Coombes,SU3187

Woolstone,SU2986
Woolstone: Cowleaze Farm,SU2888
Woolstone: Woolstone Hill Barn,SU2985

but these could be plotted on a map to show the area layout to cross refer to census with.

Sorry Merlin know its not.  f you use the grid reference for Oxleaze SU2898 which I am certain is your one on this site

http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=4572316

then its gives you this picture (but you can't see the farm  annoyingly)

But there is this which you can access to get the information:

Hi
Because of the current location of Woolstone/Uffington you might also be able to get some further help from the Oxford or even Wiltshire boards.

I will be down in Swindon over the first weekend in the New Year and may be able to get a photo if you haven't got one by then.

Post by: Arranroots on Friday 12 December 08 20:49 GMT (UK)
I'm tempted to move this, since it definitely isn;t Gloucestershire but I can't decide which county it is!

The records seem to be in Berkshire but locals from Oxfordshire might also help, as SL implies.

How about I'll put it in Oxfordshire and you can post a link on the Berkshire and Wiltshire boards, Merilyn?  Please make sure that you don't end up with several threads going at once though!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi
Here is a photo of Oxleaze.
The gable end facing the camera is a newish addition (old bricks).
It is in multiple occupation and the chap I spoke to has this side of the main building and added the extension mentioned above.
Didn't get round the back to photo that side.

Thankyou so much to StintonLomas, my family and particularly myself will get a lot of pleasure from this photo, I feel it has brought closure as well, we had never seen our grandfathers childhood home.
Not only is it appreciated, the phot is also a very clear one and well taken.
Once again, thankyou to all who have helped out on this project,
