Hi Andrea
Could it be Wroclaw you could be looking for as this was in the Kingdom of Prussia As for Auclaw cant find it anywhere.
Regards Kynne

Hello Andrea,
Can you post a snippet from the birth cert to this forum?
I think you may be misreading the place name.
Justin
PS Wroclaw is a city in southern Poland that was formerly known as Breslau when it was in the German province of Silesia (Schlesien).

Following the idea that it might be Wroclaw, because of the last letters 'claw'.
I did find Inowroclaw on a Prussian 1830-1840 map.
Inowroclaw did have its name changed a couple of times, but for 1836 it's a possible match. Best to do a wikipedia check.
I cannot find any other possibilities.

Hello everybody,
what looks like Auclaw in a hand-written document is definitely the Eastern-German town of Anklam. This is a seafarers' town with a long tradition on the mouth of the river Peene into the Baltic Sea, formerly a Prussian town.
In British documents the "k" obviously was written as a "c" = Anclam, what is pronounced the same way. The "n" and "m" obviously are looking like "u" and "w".
I'm quite sure about this.
For further investigation, Andrea, and to find the roots of your great grandfather you could write to
Stadtverwaltung Anklam, Standesamt, Marktstraße 3, D-17389 Anklam, Tel. (from Britain) 0049-3971-202712. They can certainly tell you where the records of your forefathers are kept.
In addition I give you the following links:
