My great grandfather described himself as a 'pattern designer to a calico printer' in the censuses from 1851-91. The family lived first in Burnside Street in Glasgow which I think was demolished a long time ago. They later moved to Grove Street and ended up in Napiershall Street and the tenement that they lived in is still standing. What I would like to know is where my great grandfather would have worked. Presumably there was a cotton mill not far away. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Has some information regarding Cotton and Calico works in Glasgow. The Industry really came to the fore in the 18th century and was particularly prominent in the North side of the city.
Burnside Street was off of Garscube Road in Maryhill Burgh where Cotton working is listed as one of the main industries of the burgh.
Dawsholm also relatively nearby was also the site of the first major works

One of the major employers of calico printers was Thornliebank Calico Printworks, which was established by John Crum in 1789 and flourished until its closure in 1929. Many of my ancestors worked there. In fact, one of my relatives was the proprietor of a vast calendering business in Virginia Street, Glasgow (McMutrie and Paterson), where numerous calico printers were also employed until the mid-1900s.

Thank you, Falkryn and Rodeo for these replies. Now at least I know where Burnside Street was. Is Dawsholm the name of a district or street? It isn't in my A-Z of Glasgow. I'll certainly look at the Glasgow story website.

I used to play football at Dawsholm theres a Council Cleansing Incinerator on that site not many if any tenements left there now

Has a photograph of Burnside Street/ Roslin Place from the 1920's.
The text puts Burnside street in Cowcaddens area which is slightly further to the east and south of Dalsholm area but bang in the middle between that and Port Dundas - both of which were major industrial areas.
This map from http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx shows Burnside street was just slightly south of Grove Street.
