I'm trying to find the parents of my g.grandfather, Thomas Morrisroe.
The information I have is that Thomas was born c.1850 and emigrated from Ireland to England between 1881 and 1888 (He doesn't appear in the 1881 census and he was married in Yorkshire in 1888.)
On his marriage cert. his father is listed as Thomas Morrisroe (deceased); occupation stonemason.
One of the witnesses was a Martin Morrisroe, possibly a brother or cousin?
I know the family came from the Ballaghaderreen area, but I'm not sure exactly where, so I am listing this on both the Mayo and Roscommon boards.
If anyone can find the family in any census I would be so grateful as I'm really stuck with this.
Thanks in advance.

Earliest available census records for both Mayo and Roscommon is 1901. 1911 is also available. Both will eventually be online (free) on National Arhives, Dublin website.

Thanks. I didn't know that.

there seems to be very few people with that exact surname in Ireland - e.g. on Griffiths Valuation (1847 to 1864 ) there are a total of 12 households in all of Ireland.
Roscommon 8
Sligo 3
Mayo 1
from Slaters directories :
1870 : Patrick Morrisroe , Ballinafad, Boyle Co. Roscommon - Grocer
1881 : Morrisroe Patrick, Ballinafad, Boyle Co. Roscommon - Publican
1894 : John Morrisroe, Charlestown, Co. Mayo - Baker
the Irish Family History Foundation website at www.irish-roots.ie includes Counties Roscommon & Mayo. Its a subscription site - parish records transcripts cost €5, index is free to search once you register.
a search for Thomas Morrisroe between 1846 and 1854 shows one result :
Church Baptism Morrisroe Thomas 1853 Co. Roscommon
the record seems to be from the Catholic Parish of 'Tibohine-Fairymount'
There's a town named Tibohene about 7 km east of Ballaghaderreen

There is a Sister Mary Morrisroe currently living n Limerick whose mother was Gertrude Morrisroe from Fairymount. In the C19th this was in the civil parish of Tibohine. Gertie as she was known was a good friend of my mothers and I am in contact with Sister Mary. Both Gertie and my mother are deceased.

Hi Eileen,
I'm so sorry I haven't replied sooner. I've only just seen your message. Somehow it got overlooked.
If you could find out anything at all re the Morrisroes I would be most grateful.
They are proving extremely difficult to locate.
Regards, Marody.
