Hello ALL:
I am a 6th generation decendent of James Brooking (b. 1810) and Jemima Dart (b. 1820). I live in the US and my Great Great Grandma Margaret M Brooking was the daughter of James & Jemima.
My tree has no history prior to James & Jemima. I hope the names and birth dates are enough for some one to take notice.
Both were from Newton Abbot, Torquay, Devon, England
Thank you for any info you may have.
Jim

They should have been. it appears margaret m brooking was born in Newton Abbot, Torquay, Devon, England. she died in bethel Connecticut. James & Jemima were married in 1840 in Newton Abbot, Torquay, Devon, England. i have no other info about them.

when was Margaret born ? Theres a candidate in 1851 - right area, but not right parents ....
a Jemima was in Tor moham in 1841, with a very young infant Sarah - no male present (not that the 1841 shows relationships, but can normally be deduced

Hi both and welcome Jim :)
Sorry Newf - was typed :-\
Not much help with the parents but here's possibly a sister ...

Any idea what the M stood for? The daughter of Jemima and James seems to have been plain Margaret, but there is also a Margaret Martin Brooking born about the same time, parents William and Margaret ...
Jemima was older than you think by the way, if she was 25 (=between 25 and 29) in 1841.
Can you see a death for Jemima Brooking in 1851 Newf? ???
-
The IGI isnt much help - someones been delving into this couple and made some stabs at a marriage date - but all refns are to a Jane ....
-
Looks like they had gone by 1861 - do you have an immigration date into the USA ?
-
sarah brooking b.1841
louisa brooking b. 1842 married edward maryon b.1838
mary ann brooking b. 1844
william brooking b. 1848
margaret m brooking b.1849
Those names all match the James & Jane couple in the 1851 census - again in TorMoham ...

my great aunt built the tree, i am trying to expand it further back into england, holland and scotland .
so there might ne misinformation, as it stands?

Order Margarets Birth Cert (specified earlier) to check Mothers details ...... twill be interesting if its a Jane 'somebody else' !
£7.00 with a credit card ...
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
Also if you get that Marriage Cert, it will detail their Fathers names - who may well still be around for the 1841 census ...
-
As Tati said - they are a little older than you thought - if they were correct themselves of course !
There is a death for a Jemima in Plymouth, 1845 - and a marriage of a James to a Jane, also Plymouth - but in the 4th Q of 1851, so prob not relevant - but you should get those certs - remember that the Census is just a one day snapshot in a 10 year period !

thank you all. very helpful info. if anyone has info going backwards from james & jemima (jane). i can exchange info from maragret and forward.
-
If I were you, I'd really try to find out what the M in Margaret stood for, just to check if the Jemima connection is correct at all.
As Newf asked - do you know when they emigrated? Did they leave Louisa behind (if she is the one who married Edward Maryon, she was still in England in 1864)?

actually most of it makes sense. i show an early death for jemima, and arrival appears to be around 1860's, i am researching that now.
