Title: O'kanes of Limavady
Post by: roryokane on Thursday 04 December 08 12:56 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

My name is Rory O'Kane and am in the middle of researching my ancestors, so far I am the middle of tracing back my Grannies side who was called Annie O'kane (maiden name O'connor from Cell bridge in Co. Kildare). She was married to my Grandfather John (Sean) O'kane from Limavady County Derry.

I am the son of his son known as James (Seamus) O'kane.

I know my aunts and uncle from this side of the family but now want to find out about my granfather's father etc...

If there is anybody that can help with photos or information I would be delighted to hear from you.

You've probably already discovered that there are lots of O'Kanes/Kanes in the Limavady area which may make it more difficult to trace your family.
It can sometimes be more difficult to find details of recent family history online and details of living people, email addresses, etc. shouldn't be posted on Rootschat.
Perhaps you could give us an idea of how far back you've managed to trace your O'Kanes and where they lived (Limavady itself or outside the town?) and then we can see what information might be available to help you find more about them.

John (Sean) O'Kane lived at 45 Irish Green Street in Limavady and was married to Annie O'kane (maiden name O'Connor from Cellbridge CO. Kilfare.)

They had 5 children:

James (Seamus)
Maura
Annie
Bridgeen
Eugene

My father was Seamus and was Town Clerk in Ballycastle in County Antrim and died on the 11th of december 2005.

Still can't really answer without an idea of dates. For example, when was your grandfather born?

Rory,
To emphasise Aghadowey's point I have found

1 Nov 1875 John Kane married Susanna Connor in Dungiven R. C. Church

17 Mar 1915 John O'Kane married Elizabeth Connor in Ballycastle R.C. Church

Regards

Exactly, too many O'Kanes to just keep guessig. We can suggest searching things like 1911 or 1901 census but if the grandfather wasn't born until after that those will be no use.

Hi Rory,

It probably would be best to ask the local parish priest to view the records and work your way back from your grandparents.
Parish records can sometimes be very detailed...or it might just record the names and the date. But for the 20th Century the records should be quite detailed.
From your grandparents marriage you should get what townland/street they lived on and hopefully who their parents were. Although most marriages only lists the fathers name and not the mothers.
Also from their marriage you should get a good idea of when they where born and you can look back through the records for their births, parenst marriage and siblings briths.
When where your grandparents married approximately?

Hope that helps. :)
