Title: The Cordiala of ClareGalway.
Post by: Brian1 on Wednesday 03 December 08 19:30 GMT (UK)
I am looking to see if anyone has any detail about the Cordial family who lived in ClareGalway in 1855. Henry Cordial had been a soldier in the Rifle Brigade from the 1820's and had retired from the service in the mid 1840's . He was married to Elizabeth Fielding and had 5 surviving children. James, Margaret, Sarah Mary, Mona and John. All of the children were born whilst he was in the service. I don't think that Henry or his wife were born in County Galway, but possibly in Granard, Co. Longford. I have some of their history in Clare Galway from the Griffith valuation tables, but they disappear in 1856 and it is this period I am keen to explore.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for the ancestry of John CORDIAL who was supposedly born 1827-28 in London.
John CORDIAL emigrated to Australia, first appearing there in 1855, and then on to New Zealand where he died in 1881.
His first born son was called Henry Fielding CORDIAL, which perhaps comes from Elizabeth Fielding.
Could he be the John CORDIAL you mention?

I believe That Sarah Cordial was my Great Grandmother she married Thomas Dowling of Wicklow Ireland . She would have been born around 1833 she had 13 children the first three in Ireland and the rest in England mostly in Liverpool, Her second son Thomas [Born 1864} was my Grandfather he came to Boston Massachusetts around 1898
Her first son was Henry born in Galway  1862.  I believe that Brian1 posted a photo of my Great Uncle Robert Dowling who was in the 1st Gordon Highlanders . Peter in Boston

Definitely we are related through the children of Thomas and Sarah Mary Dowling. My connection is through Ellen Dowling who married a James Gordon . Ellen was sister to your Thomas and also to Robert.

Just found out that Henry Cordial of Clare Galway was appointed to the postal service as a messenger and letter courier on 19th Dec 1855.
Interestingly there is another reference to a death of Henry CARDIAL in Galway district. Volume 4 page 223
I would hazard a guess that this has been a bad transcription and should read CORDIAL. Anyone have access to the Galway death registrations for 1875?
Thanks
Brian
